Chapter 1- Fear

Cortny sat straight up. Sweat rolled off of her forehead, dripping into her eyes and causing them to sting. The dream sorted through her thoughts, seeking to trigger her inner wolf to come out. She swallowed down her anger. Dang it Jacob! She thought. You and you're stupid obsessing over the Cullens, its messing with my thoughts and dreams. The dream still danced in her thoughts, pulling whatever emotions it wanted. Cortny trembled, feeling the wolf inside wanting to come out, willing her to shift.

Cortny pushed down the fire, but it fought back. A unintentional growl ripped through her throat, forcing it's way up to rip the air around her. The lamp shook from the force of anger that the growl carried. Cortny tried to push the fire back down again, willing it to submit, but it refused. She finally gave in and kicked off her shoes, not wanting to destroy them. She sprinted out the door, passing Jacob and Sam. Jacob yelled after her, but he didn't stop her knowing that she was about to explode. Sam only looked after her, obviously wondering what had triggered her shift. Cortny only gave them a warning glance. Don't come near me, she thought as she shifted into her wolf form.

Her fur rustled in the breeze, and a whole array of new smells hit her sensitive nose. She faintly smelt the Cullens, whose scent differed from most vampires. They smelt more like the forest flowers whilst other vampires smelt like heavily processed flowers that were given extra scent. Either way it made her nose itch and sometimes even burn. Vampires were always complaining about how werewolves smelt like dogs, and many a time Cortny had almost snapped back; saying "Well you smell like dead, rotting roses!" But every time she'd open her mouth to snap back, Jacob or Sam would glare at her. It was infuriating. The only vampires that didn't smell were the half-human ones, and sadly, here weren't many of those. They actually smelt, well, alive. Not like someone was trying to cover the smell of death with overly pungent flowers.

Cortny's thoughts drifted to her friend, Desiree, who was a half-human. She had made the choice to live with the Volturi, and Cortny hated the Volturi. They were basically the rulers over all the vampires. Cortny snorted. They smelt bad too. The Volturi hunted humans, luring them into their home with promises of sightseeing and the wonders of their castle. It made Cortny sick. They hunted men, women, and children, not caring who the people may have become. They were merciless.

Desiree was different. She was at least somewhat respectful, and she tried not to eat humans around the pack. She was one of the most gifted vampires in the Volturi, having more than one gift. In fact she had at least ten. Cortny huffed, breathing in the air once more. She knew what it was like to be feared for a gift. Desiree liked to be feared by the other members of the Voturi, but Cortny just wished she wasn't feared by the members of her pack. She wasn't of the Quillette tribe, so when she transformed it was different. She could attack with her mind, bending the other pack members to her will if she so wished. She usually didn't, but the gift was just like her shifting. It was uncontrollable. Unpredictable. And the others feared her for it. Jacob said it was because whatever blood she had in her was Alpha blood. She was meant to be the leader of another pack, but the pack she belonged to wasn't there. Usually the only person who dared shift when she was shifted was Jacob. Sometimes Sam would, but he also feared her.

She finally got up from the place she had been laying for this thought process. She didn't want to go back to the house where Jacob and Sam where. She actually wanted to talk with a sensible person, a person who was gentle and kind. Carlisle. She decided. He was sensible, calm, nice, and honestly the only vampire that Cortny truly trusted. The pack scorned her for this, but they didn't look past the fact that he was a vampire. Underneath all the pale glittery skin, he was a nice guy. What could Cortny say, she was fair-skinned herself. When she had shifted, she wanted to keep her hair long, so her pelt as a wolf was long, but long in a pretty, flowing way. Her fur usually fluffed up as the wind moved through it, giving her a younger look, and she was the youngest in the pack at the age of fifteen. It also suggested that she was from a pack that was meant for a colder area than Forks., And maybe thats why she was pale. She was from a place with not much sun.

She ran on, navigating her way by memory until she reached the border. From there she made sure to ask if she could come in, using her thoughts and hoping that Edward could hear her. Before long she heard her reply. Yes. That was part of her gift also. She could speak to any vampire or person that was within her range, which was a little over a mile. If she was lucky Carlisle would have heard she was coming from Edward. She walked inside, still in wolf form. Esme walked up to her, the ever present smile on her face. Her scent hit Cortny's nose and she hid a grimace.

"Good morning Cortny! So good to see you here."

Good morning Esme. Thanks for letting me in here.

"Of course. You'll always be welcome here. Here's some clothes for you to change into."

Cortny gently took the clothes in her mouth, then walked into a empty bathroom to shift. When she had shifted and changed, she walked into the living room, which way surprisingly modern and bright. She also noticed that Carlisle was sitting on one of the sofas. He was obviously waiting for her.

"Hello Carlisle."

"Hello Cortny. What brings you here?"

"Just need someone sensible to talk to."

"Well you've come to the right place." Jasper said, walking slowly by. Cortny scowled playfully, pretending to be offended by his comment against her pack mates. She wasn't in the slightest. Jasper laughed and sat next to Carlisle.

"I just needed some people who weren't afraid of me. People who would talk. And people I didn't want to kill because they obsess over their imprint, therefore affecting other people's dreams."

"Jacob?" Carlisle guessed.

"Pretty much. After all, he's the only one who'll talk to me anyway."

"So you had another outburst?"

"Ya." Cortny hung her head. Most of the wolves had almost taken control of their phasing, but sometimes the inner wolf in her would force its way out. Just like this morning.

"What was the dream about now?" Renesmee quietly asked. She was standing in the doorway. Cortny hadn't noticed her before, she had no scent to warn Cortny of her arrival. Cortny almost had a pang of sympathy for the young girl. Almost. She looked about ten now, though she was still only a couple of months old. Maybe even a year. Cortny sighed. She didn't want to say what the dream was about. It almost seemed wrong telling this child the terrors of her dream. No. Cortny thought bitterly. Jacob's dream in my head. But Cortny knew that the girl had wisdom beyond her age. Beyond her looks.

Cortny huffed, again. She knew the girl would get what she wanted. She might as well tell her now.

"It was through Jacob's eyes. He was being forced to destroy you. He hated himself for it, he wished that someone would kill him because of it. The feeling was terrible. It's not something that I could explain in words. I guess that's just how imprinting works." Cortny hadn't imprinted on anyone before, but she had felt the way her pack mates had felt towards their imprint. They would worry about the slightest thing that ever happened to their imprint. It almost seemed ridiculous to Cortny.

Renesmee's breath caught. It was a sound that a human wouldn't have heard or noticed, but all of the beings in the room heard it. Bella was by Renesmee's side in an instant, apparently dropping whatever she had been doing in another part of the house to comfort her daughter. Renesmee clung to her mother, and Bella shot a glare at Cortny. She instantly felt guilty. She hadn't meant to scare the young child. She had just had answered her question.

"He would never do that though. It would tear him apart. I promise." Cortny stuttered, trying to find words that would help to comfort her. She then realized that the words were probably not helping and closed her mouth, sighing. She had managed to make another being afraid of her.

"Would you take Renesmee somewhere else Bella? I'd like to talk to Cortny alone." Jasper suddenly said, pulling Cortny out of her trance. Carlisle stood and left, glancing over his shoulder at Jasper. Cortny sighed, relieved that her senses were not as overwhelmed by the scent of the vampires. Jasper laughed as she breathed in the somewhat clean air again. She briefly laughed with him, but paused halfway through as Jasper's face grew suddenly serious.

"I know how it feels to be feared." Jasper stated, so sure of that statement it surprised Cortny.

"How did you-" She started, only to be cut off again.

"My gift. And common sense."Jasper said, answering Cortny's question before she even finished it.

"You need to give them a reason to trust you." He continued.

"As if I haven't tried!" Cortny exclaimed. This vampire was starting to get on her nerves. He would never understand the closeness of the pack. He would never understand how their fear almost made her afraid of herself.

"If you even knew what I could do you'd be afraid too!" She growled. If she phased now her mind would attack any of the wolves that were phased and joined in the pack's mind.

"I highly doubt it. I've trained a newborn army before. I'd be okay." Jasper reassured, even as he tried to project his gift of calming towards her. She noticed, and it only made her worse. She was to far into her rage. She rose from her seat, quivering. Jasper was across the room in a millisecond, settling into a ready position. Cortny exploded. Pieces of clothing went everywhere, and the couch she had been sitting on before was torn to shreds as she took her anger out on it. Soon she turned to Jasper.

You think you understand me?

And then she attacked.
