Stigma
A/N: Here we are! The final chapter of Follower! I can't believe we are actually here already. I want to thank all of my readers, especially ThePianoManiac for reading and commenting on literally every chapter. I'm so happy to have found such wonderful people.
If you don't follow me, or just didn't see, I will be writing a full length fic. The first chapter of which is up right now! It's called Birds of a Feather and it centers around Jungkook, Overwatch, and an indie game developer/ university student. I'd love your feedback and it will certainly be a lot funnier and not as heavy as this fic. Check it out and let me know what you think! Without further ado, I'll shut up and get to the story.
xXx
"Tae!" you said, a genunine smile breaking out across your face for the first time since before the Piper took him. You rushed over to the form and wrapped your arms and fell onto your knees and wrapped your arms around his waist, burying your face in his shoulder.
Your fingers traced over his back and you felt the scars from the whip. The punishment he took for you. You let the tears fall onto his shoulder.
"Tae," you said. "Why? Why did the Piper take you?"
You pulled away from him. Your tears now stained his shirt and you saw his eyes were red and puffy too.
He opened his mouth to speak, but before he could get any words out. Abraxas interrupted.
"Well, if it isn't the two lovers?" he said, his voice cutting your skin like the flick of a whip. He stepped out from the shadows. His true form was terrifying. He was huge, probably half as tall as the mountain itself. He looked vaguely human, with four limbs and a head, but from his head sprouted two large horns that curled inwards, like a ram. His eyes glowed red and his limbs appeared slightly too long for the rest of his body. You couldn't make out his face, even if you tried to look. It was like the horizon, no matter how hard you looked, you'd never truly see it.
"This is the one in love with you?" Abraxas asked, approaching the Piper. Despite feeling the terror rise in your body, you stood beside him. "I remember him, from just last year. He was strong, not one the Piper would normally take. He put up more of a fight."
Abraxas leaned down and grabbed the Taehyung's chin, forcing the Piper to look up at him. You reached down and intertwined your fingers with Taehyung's.
"He cried towards the end. He wanted to save you, save you from me. Isn't that right? You waited for the Piper that night, so that she wouldn't be taken."
Taehyung cried. He tried to force his chin from Abraxas' tight grasp, but it was fruitless. You tightened your grip on his fingers. Fingers, you thought you'd never hold again.
"I thought I could defeat him..." Tae said, quietly, his voice cracking. "I thought I could defeat him before the Piper came for you. But I failed..."
He squeezed your hand and you felt the tears burning your eyes again.
"You didn't fail," you said. "We can still do this together."
Abraxas chuckled. He let go of Taehyung and backed to the other side of the cave. You could barely see him among the shadows, but you felt the anger boiling within you. He was the one who created the value of strength in you village. He took your father from you. He took Taehyung from you. You weren't going to allow him to take the small ounce of strength you had left.
xXx
Blood ran down the side of your face; warm and slick. The soft tingle of the lightning all around you brought you back to the fight. Taehyung was the newest Piper, he could still control the abilities given to him. He slung his bolts of lightning like whips, the thought made you smile. You hoped they burned into Abraxas' flesh and left marks like on Taehyung's back.
You caught you breath and tried to stand again, bracing yourself against the rock wall. You weren't much help when it came to fighting Abraxas. You were completely and fallibly human. Abraxas was some sort of other worldly being and the Piper was some combination of both.
"It's funny," Abraxas said, stalling the fight. "You think I can't kill you, just because no one else can."
Taehyung stood rigid, seemingly unaffected by the words. But you could tell by the way he bit his lip and flicked his gaze upward, he was scared.
"I don't need the Piper, not really. I just liked to see the faces of those I've defeated in the past."
Abraxas reached into Taehyung's chest. The Piper's body lifting off the ground, nearly even with Abraxas' head. Despite Abraxas' face being a mystery to you, you could tell he was smiling as he tightened his hand into a fist and Taehyung's body fell limply onto the cave floor.
xXx
"No!" you screamed, rushing over to the Piper's body.
You pressed your palms against his cheeks. His eyes
still open slightly, his hand coming up into your hair. Tears fell freely down your face and you leaned down and pressed your lips to his. They were cold before you even pulled away.
xXx
Every muscle in your body tensed and you turned back to Abraxas. Your fists clenched and you ran without inhibition towards Abraxas. He slammed you against the wall before you could reach him.
"I'll offer you a deal, girlie," Abraxas said, the smile you couldn't see back. "You can be the beginning of a new generation of the Piper."
"No," you said, immediately.
Abraxas laughed.
"You say that, as if you have a choice."
He lifted your body off the ground and out of the corner of your eye you could see he'd done the same with the Piper's body. He was slowly drawing the two of you closer together.
Within seconds you were practically touching the Piper's lifeless form, and you felt the Piper's body becoming part of your own.
"No!" you screamed. "I will not be your Piper!"
Abraxas laughed, forcing the two of you together faster. You felt the form becoming your own and you attempted to fight it, but Abraxas was too strong.
You felt the Piper's form fusing with your own. You opened your eyes and felt the power running through you. You felt the energy in the room. With the twitch of your finger, you felt the entire world shift.
"I won't let you take me!" you screamed, throwing your arms outward. You rose into the air as water began to fill the outside of the cave. The rock rolls began to collapse around you until sunlight was visible.
"I've never seen power like this before..." Abraxas said, as he attempted to approach you. You pushed him away with your hand and trapped him with one of the large slabs of rock that'd broken off from the top of the cave. Water rushed around you. It reached your ankles, your waist, your chin, and then it was inside of you. Filling your lungs. This time you let it.
You screamed, the water burning your throat and bubbles heading upwards. You followed them and as soon as you reached dry land you collapsed.
xXx
You awoke back in the village. People crowded around. Some were familiar faces; your mother, old classmates. Others were only ones you'd seen in passing. You looked down at your form, still soaking wet. It hadn't been a dream.
"Tae," you said, feeling the reality that he was dead rising from your stomach, where you'd hid it.
"Yes?" a voice answered.
You looked up and saw Taehyung making his way through the crowd, a smirk plastered on his face. His hair and form were also wet.
"You-you're alive?!"
Despite the pain you felt, you rushed to him and threw yourself in his arms. He groaned, but hugged you just as tightly.
"What happened?! You were dead!"
"I woke up on the shore of the lake next to you. Except I was alive, completely alive, mortal again," he said. "It didn't take me long to figure out that lake had once been a mountain and that Abraxas was dead. You did it. No more Abraxas, no more Piper, no more stigma."
You hugged him tightly before pulling away and pressing your lips to his. You didn't care that nearly the whole village watched, you'd waited much too long to finally kiss him.
"I love you."
"I love you too."
xXx
From that day on, the village of Hamelin was no longer subject to the tyranny of Abraxas. The weak were helped by the strong, instead of pitied or cast away. The only remaining sign of the Piper's existence was the flute you kept tucked away in a trunk.
Occasionally, you would take it out and play a note. The urge to follow the sound was no longer there, but there was something still beautiful about the object. It may have lost it's magic, but it's strength and beauty remained as a reminder that true strength came in many forms.
THE END
A/N: I can't believe it's over! I'm so proud of this and I hope you enjoyed reading Follower as much as I enjoyed writing it. Thank you all so much for your support and dedicated readership. While this is the end of Follower, it may not be the complete end of this universe for me ;).
Do remember that if you're reading this, the first chapter of my new full length fic, Birds of a Feather is up now! It is very different from Follower, but I don't doubt that you will enjoy it!
