Hailkit opened her striking blue eyes and gazed around, her fur standing on end.

Her dream started to fade away and the stench of blood was being replaced by the sweet smell of milk.

Hailkit glanced at her sister Icekit and nudged her slightly, " Icekit. Are you awake? "

Icekit shifted in her nest and opened her groggy eyes, " Now I am. "

Hailkit opened her mouth to speak but was cut off by Froststars meeting yowl.

Woodtail, their mother shifted in her nest and stretched before leaving the nursery.

" Icekit. It's time, Froststar is going to talk about Eagletalon. " Hailkits tiny blue eyes widen in fear and she padded to the entrance of the nursery. Icekit wiggled in beside her.

" Do you think that Forestclaw will get nervous? " Icekit mewed.

Hailkit hissed and swatted her sisters muzzle, " Be quiet! We could be killed if anyone finds out! "

Icekit narrowed her eyes and opened her mouth to retort but was cut off by Froststar,

" As we all know, Eagletalon was found dead inside our territory today. I sent out Deerpool and Runningleap to investigate more. " Her voice seemed to falter a little, " He was killed by another cat. "

Silence was what greeted her words, Hailkit stared at Forestclaw but he hid his emotions well and he didn't show any signs of suspicion.

" No other clan scent was found around his body, and what's worse is that his body was found very close to our camp. " Her eyes raged with blue fire, " Either Eagletalon was killed by a passing rouge or he was killed by a clan mate. " Her voice turned into a growl.

" Who would do such a thing? " Russetfeathers caterwault filled the silence, " Surly whoever it is should be exiled. "

Froststar shook her powerful head, " We do not know who it was. There was no fur what so ever. "

The cats below in the clearing glanced wearily at each other, some cats moving away from others.

Hailkit held her breath as Forestclaw stood up, " Now. We mustn't make assumptions. We do not know if it was a clan mate or a rouge. "

Froststar nodded, " My deputy is right. We must remain a clan and whoever has done this will get what they deserve. "

Hailkit wrinkled her nose in discust, that lying flea-brain!

Icekit snorted and muttered something Hailkit couldn't catch.

Hailkit flattened her ears as Froststar dismissed the assembled cats. She turned back to her nest, the warmth already gone from it.

Hailkit let her mind wander, trying to block out the other sounds,

Eagletalon stepped into camp, his golden fur glowing in the afternoon sun. He padded over to the fresh-kill pile his huge white paws gliding over the ground. Hailkit padded up to her father, " Hello Eagletalon! How was hunting today? "

He chuckled and gazed down at her with amber eyes, " It was magnificent. "

Hailkit giggled and leaped up and batted his nose, " I'm going to be the greatest warrior. Just like you. "

Eagletalon smiled, and purred, " When your older, I'll be your mentor and I'll teach you the ways. "

Hailkit gazed into her fathers loving eyes, not knowing that that night he would be brutally murdered by Forestclaw.

Hailkit squeezed her eyes shut and shifted uncomfortably in her nest.

A warm breath tickled her ear and she opened her eyes only to come face to face with Boulderkit.

" Hey! " He squeaked, his green eyes blazing.

Hailkit rolled her eyes and bowled him over and pinned him down, " Gotcha! "

He smirked and thrust her in the air, and she went flying, landing on Boulderkits sister, Dawnkit.

" Hey! Watch what your doing, Hailkit. " Birchfur, Dawnkit and Boulderkits mother sneered.

" We were only playing. " Hailkit snapped, She lowered her ears, she didn't understand why Birchfur disliked her, but she did.

" That's no way to talk to me! Why can't you be more like your sister? " Birchfur growled and grabbed Hailkit by the scruff and threw her to her own nest, " Stay away. Boulderkit, come on. "

Boulderkit looked guiltily at Hailkit then padded to her mother, his green eyes narrowed into slits.

Hailkit noticed Icekit staring wide eyes. Suddenly very angry, Hailkit pushed passed Icekit and snuck out of the nursery, careful that no one saw.

She slithered through her secret hole and she ran out into the forest, her unusual long legs carrying her farther than the other kits legs would do.

Hailkit halted as a large crack filled her ears. She stood very still, her ears swiveled around. It was unusually quiet.

Suddenly, amber eyes stared back at her and a fox emerged from the bushes, its jaws foaming.

Hailkit stared in horror, her blue eyes wide.

The fox darted towards her, foam flying to the ground. Hailkit squeaked and rolled away, nearly missing a death bite .

The fox let out a screech and Hailkit turned her head around and saw a patrol consisting of, Minnowpaw, And Pineheart.

A flash of Tortishell fur indicated Shywhiskers arrival, her amber eyes blazing with rage.

Hailkit crouched low, watching the fight unfold.

Shywhisker approached the beast, her amber eyes darted from side to side, gauging her next move.

Minnowpaw hissed and the fox whipped its head towards her, foam flying through the air.

Shywhisker took the opportunity and launched herself forward, latching her jaws around the foxes neck, Her claws digging into the beasts fur.

The fox tipped and shook its head from side to side shaking Shywhisker loose. Before Shywhisker could leap out of the way, the fox pinned her with a paw and leaned its head back to bite her.

Pineheart was suddenly standing over Shywhisker, the foxes jaws buried in his brown fur.

Pineheart yowled and fell to the ground twitching and flinching.

Shywhisker stood and growled, swatting the fox with thrown sharp claws. She was like lightning, flashing blow after blow to the fox, it unable to touch her.

Minnowpaw stood next to Hailkit her green eyes wide.

Finally the fox stumbled and scampered away, leaving a heavy trail of blood.

" Pineheart! " Shywhisker leaned over his twitching body, her eyes wide with horror, " Why would you do that? "

Pineheart opened his jaws and rasped, " Shywhisker I - " His body jerked and he fell limp, his sides forever still.

Shywhisker tilted her head back and yowled, her bloody claws digging into the ground.

Hailkit couldn't help but punish herself, Pineheart would still be alive if it weren't for you! She thought solemnly.

Shywhisker turned her hollow gaze to Hailkit, " You! What in Starclans name were you doing out here? Pineheart is dead because of you! "

Hailkit lowered her gaze and Minnowpaw hissed, " This wasn't her fault! And if she hadn't stumbled upon this fox, more cats, besides Pineheart would have been killed. "

Shywhisker sighed and lowered her head, her ears drooped.

" Hailkit lets get back to camp, let Froststar know what had happened " Minnowpaw murmured, " And get you back to the queens den, out of trouble. "

Hailkit hung her head, and nodded solemnly.

She couldn't help but feel everything she does is in vain, she walked back to camp with a heavy heart, just wishing everything would go away.

Pineheart felt his eyes grow heavy and his body weaken, the venom running through his veins.

He closed his eyes for the last time and opened them moments later, surrounded by starry pelted cats.

One in particular strode up to him, her calico pelt shining, " Pineheart. " her voice was soft.

Pineheart stood and gazed into his mother's eyes, " Calicopelt. I- I'm dead. "

Calicopelt must have noticed the sadness in his eyes, " Pineheart. Don't feel this way. You saved Shywhisker, and Hailkit. It's a good thing too because Shywhisker is going to have Kits. "

Pineheart raised his head proudly, " Who's is the father. " He spoke slowly.

Calicopelt chuckled, " You are Mouse-brain! "

Pineheart flicked his ear and playfully hissed, " I'm not a mouse-brain! "

Calicopelt suddenly grew serious, " However, One of your Kits is part of a prophecy sent moons ago, given to Russetfeather jay when he was an apprentice. "

Pineheart flicked his tail waiting for more, " Three will become one and destroy the darkness that lasts forever. "

Pineheart gazed at Calicopelt, " What does it mean? "

Calicopelt sighed, " We do not know. "

Pineheart gazed down at Shywhisker, dragging his body back to camp.

" I can tell you once thing however. " Calicopelt directed his gaze toward Hailkit, " That kit is important to the prophecy, that is the only one that I know of at this time. I'm merely a queen up here in StarClan, only the leaders and medicine cats know the prophecy and it's true meaning. Us others, must wait and find out, or simply overhear conversations. "

Pineheart gazed at Hailkit, questions flooding his mind.

" Well, lets go meet the rest of StarClan shall we? " Calicopelt turned and started to walk away.

Pineheart trailed after her, his heart determined to find out the destiny of his kit.
