Intentional Problem Solving
The Power of Intentional Thinking and Problem Solving
When we face problems in life, they can sometimes dominate our minds all day long. However, this is no way to live. Without choosing intentional thinking, our minds tend to wander aimlessly, often fixating on problems. For example, we might find ourselves constantly thinking about how difficult our relationship is, or repeatedly worrying about a lack of money while riding the bus. Whatever our problems may be, living without intentional thought isn't ideal. This is why knowing how to problem solve is so important (Keyes, 2014).
One of the most common areas people struggle with is relationship problems, so I'll use this as an example. But keep in mind, this skill applies to all kinds of problems. Many people endlessly debate in their minds whether to break up or stay in a relationship. They flip back and forth, spending countless hours caught between two choices. This indecision can make them emotionally exhausted, largely because they don't realize that their thoughts create their emotions — and they don't know how to solve problems effectively.
What is Problem Solving?
Problem solving means intentionally setting aside time to focus on finding solutions. Once that time is up, we let go of the problem for the rest of the day to protect our mental health. For instance, if I'm struggling in a relationship, I don't want that to ruin my entire day. So, I might dedicate 20 minutes to think things through. If after that time I'm still unsure, I simply don't make any big decisions like breaking up. Instead, I shift my attention to thoughts that bring calm and peace. This practice helps me maintain my mental well-being.
Our thought-life plays a crucial role in shaping our emotions. This means learning to control emotions through our thoughts is vital — and we can't afford to spend the entire day obsessing over problems. Effective problem solving works well for issues that don't demand immediate answers, especially things we can't change right away, like financial challenges or physical appearance.
Balancing Thought and Emotion
If I spend most of my day intentionally thinking about things I enjoy, I can have a relaxed and positive day. My best days usually start with some focused positive thinking, followed by letting my mind wander freely. However, many people make the mistake of letting their wandering thoughts dwell in negative places — and staying there. I don't do that. When I catch myself drifting into downbeat or harmful thoughts, I immediately redirect my mind to something positive to maintain good vibes.
I'm not suggesting you think intentionally every single minute — that would be exhausting! But if you dedicate intentional time to solving your problems, then resist dwelling on them outside that time, and if your mind wanders into negativity, you consciously bring it back to positivity, you create a healthy balance.
Conclusion
I am no longer controlled by my emotions because I understand that I create my emotions through my thoughts.
