Chapter 26

Life sucks sometimes. Other times, it feels like it sucks. But it doesn't suck. You just need to make it un-suck by using your brain.
~ a genius. ;) (a.k.a moi)

"Okay lads, so the Soccer League starts in four months- January. The schools have been finalised and thankfully, we have been allowed to play." Coach starts and everyone hoots, including me of course.

Coach gives me a signature smile and nods his head in recognition. Yeah, I knew. Without me, this team wasn't going to play in the same league they've been in for the first time in the last 7, consecutive years.

"However, there has been a slight change in the league's point system. Every match you lose, 1 point is deducted. Every match you draw, 1 point is added and for every match you win, 3 points are added. Oh, and after the round of 12, you cannot have below 15 points. That causes immediate disqualification." Coach explained.

"Isn't that a bit like the World Cup?" I mused, a smug smile on my face. Coach Evans gave me a playful glare and then shrugged.

"Probably. But it is what it is. Anyways, I'm going to leave you guys in this room, for five minutes." After a variety of hand gestures, he just walked out. I feel like this is a usual thing for the team.

But something was off. Everyone went dead silent and I looked around, being the first one to break the silence. "Okay, so why's everyone so quiet? Shouldn't we be like, I don't know, leaping for joy?."

I got dry looks thrown at my ace in return and my eyebrows went up. Damn.

"Mate, have you seen the other teams? They have been working their butts off like we have. Hell, who knows if we'll survive knockouts. Forget about getting to the semi's!" An aggravated Nick frustratedly made known to me that we were in fact, in great jeopardy.

But to answer his questions, nope I have never seen any other teams in this league okay. But maybe I should have.

"Oh, and we barely made it out with 17 points last year." Joey added, sighing.

I take to it that they had a tough war last year.

"Well, if we were to work together, we could still best out the point system. I have never seen such great chemistry between a whole team. Chemistry is lacked in a lot of teams- they just focus on training." I explained to them.

They can't just feel down already! It's like telling Neymar he won't have a chance to score. If someone foretold that to him, or any other football striker or midfield or defender or even goalie, they would still try and give it their all.

You never know, maybe that person was wrong.

And maybe fate decided to twist their laws once in a while. Anything is possible. Even the word impossible says "I'm possible." Just without the apostrophe.

"Alexis is right. This team is plain negative." Carson nodded in agreement and inputted his view. I smiled, thrilled we were getting somewhere away from the negativeness.

"Did anyone ask for your opinion?" Austin growled, and I almost jumped, startled from the tone of voice I'd never think of having heard from that guy.

Aksjsksksks what? No literally what just just happened?

"I was just stating-"

"But no one needs you to state it now do they?" Ethan began getting involved too. This was going to get out of hand, I could tell. I mean, the two cheeriest people on the team pissed, actually beyond fuming? Yeah that wasn't the best combo.

And I was not ready.

"What the fuck? I have a right to express my opinion!" Carson stood up now, and the duo also stood up. Their acts of synchronisation creeped me out. Way more than it should have. I mean, me and Cody do stuff in sync all the time, but I guess which on the receiving end makes you see things clearer.

"Oh yeah? Like you did with Diane?" Okay who the hell is Diane? And why are they bringing her - or he, I don't judge - into the conversation? I'm like that one lost potato floating in the middle of a sea surrounded by a group of fishes.

Literally.

"Watch that mouth of yours, Ethan, before my fist collides with that jaw of yours!" Fed up of the stupid cat fight happening, I decided I needed to say something. At the end of the day-

We're going to get nowhere with this bullshit.

"What the fuck?" I stood up. "I have no idea what the hell is going on, truth be told, but this is going to get y'all nowhere."

"But they have no right to address me like that-"

"I'm not sorting out your stupid girl fight for you, Carson. You guys are gonna have to talk it through eye to eye like the guys you are. I am just merely telling you guys to shut the eff up before something which wasn't supposed to happen, happens." I told them straight to the face.

I realised I was stood up, as I felt heat rush to my cheeks. I quickly sat down and then cursed in spanish, something I used to hear from my dad a lot, as my eyes burned through the floor.

I was acting like I've been on the team for a long ass time, when I only came. Holy shit I think someone's going to put me in my place now.

But they really did not know how to sort out problems... Hell, this little feud could be worse than that which me and Alyssa have in our bout right now.

"Alexis is right, guys. I know what happened shouldn't have happened. But it did. And it's basically made this big hole." Chase inputted, making sure nothing went beyond this point. I was shocked, to say the very least.

I could feel a few intense stares on me soften when Chase spoke, so I gathered the courage and looked at him, sending a small grateful smile his way.

"Why is Alexis always right?" Joey asked and everyone turned to look at him.

I then rolled my eyes and opened my mouth, "Because I have common sense, unlike you, dimwit." And there we go again.

Mason pulled out that thing a judge uses when passing decisions or telling the crowd to be quiet. Where did he even get that from? He banged it on the table twice. "Point to Baxter." Mason said after a few seconds of silence.

"Now, Jayden, got thoughts?" I asked and everyone looked at him. Jayden was just, well to put it bluntly, sitting there and doing nothing.

What made me say his name and put it onto him, I have no idea. I blame the human anatomy.

But his name slipped effortlessly off my tongue, and I loved the way it sounded. I mean, what the fuck?

"Why me?" He asked, crossing his arms over his chest, smirking at me. Damn, that did look sexy....

Wait what? What is with me today?

"Uh, maybe because your the Team Captain?" I suggested sarcastically, to which he rolled his eyes in reply.

"Fine. But I say we keep the false 9 format. That way, we can have three different people with different feet to strike."

"Okay, progress. Another point to Alexis and one to Jayden." I don't know what made Mason want to keep track of our "points", but clearly he was going to, whether anyone liked it or not.

I wanted to ask if I'd get food if I had the highest points, but I refrained and kept my mouth clamped shut.

"I'll play centre strike. Alexis left strike. And Chase, your on right strike. Then we have Ethan and Ian CDMs (central defence midfield), Nick on CAM, Austin on LB (left back), Carson as usual on RB (right back), Graham and Sammy as the CBs (centre back), and Joey as the Goalie of course."

"But don't you normally put Ethan and Austin on the outer rings of midfield...?" Joey asked. Okay so maybe he acted like an asshole sometimes, but he wasn't that bad.

"Yeah, but this way, we have Austin lining the defence tactically. Oh and by the way, Alexis, you aren't going to play on the first two matches."

"What!" I almost shouted, annoyed and shocked at the same time. That's not even fair. I don't wanna be in the bench, what the hell!

"Okay, everything was going smoothly... until this." Chase decided to fill the room with something, other than the silence that contaminated the air.

"I don't wanna watch from the benches; what the hell Jayden!" I was beyond pissed that I wouldn't be able to play. What did he even have against me? I have barely been here, what could he have gathered against me?

Wait, is this his way of putting me in my place? If so, then con-fucking-gratulations Jayden Bryce, you have won by a mile and a half.

"Your a girl firstly, no one knows this. Your the new player, we need you concealed. No one knows who you are. When we're against James and his stupid mother effing team, we're gonna substitute you into the match." Jayden was as calm and collected as ever.

Well, obviously, he isn't the one who is being told he isn't allowed to play, now is he?

"But that means I miss some games! And who will play in my place?" I asked, agitated. I was almost desperate to find a way out of this, and get myself to play.

"Point to Alexis." Mason contributed. "She has a point, dude, you screwed up."

"No he didn't. That'll be her brother." Chase chipped in, striking alongside his best friend.

"Cody? What makes you think Cody would agree to this?" Wait, he's an all rounder, he probably will agree. But either way, I want to play.

"I asked him...?" Chase's answer came out more as a question than a statement.

"Still not fair. He hasn't even been coming to practice! And he has that Rugby- wait I mean American Football- league thingy- whatever!. He surely can't do two! That's just sad!" I added in hope. I had no proof whatsoever of the above mentioned, mind you.

"There isn't a football league right now. It is the season, except... well it's been pushed forward... I can't remember..." Sammy was trying to remember, but I felt like he had completely forgotten. And I think he's the forgetful one.

"Because of a few school who requested it, Sammy, that's it." Ian added.

Well, the four players that I guess weren't really in the major friend group I could see in this team would be Ian, Sammy, Graham and Joey. I think they formed a friend group by themselves.

Actually I don't know about Joey. I'm not so sure if he's so tolerable...

"This is actually so unfair." I moaned, sliding slowly down my chair, pouting and arms crossed around my chest.

Until a strand of my stupid brunette hair decided to fall on my face, so I had to blow it away- making me look a lot like a little child. Something which I was not, by the way.

"Oh stop moaning. And it's been 5 minutes... Coach is gonna come in any second now."

And he was right again. At that moment, Coach Evans strode in and addressed everyone. "Now that's sorted, meet me tomorrow after school. Practice is semi-cancelled. Semi-cancelled meaning I'm sending you all to the mall for some team bonding. Bye!"

Wait what?

"You coming, 69?" Jayden smirked at me and I rolled my eyes at his innuendo. I involuntarily shivered at the mention of the said number.
"Never say that again. Ew." Was all I could come up with.

My comebacks are becoming lamer every day...

I sighed and heaved myself up. "Good luck to Me" I mumbled and coach laughed.
"Yup, good luck to you."

Coach was so free and he just laughed at my misery. "Have fun!" He said, as he pulled it his phone and began to text away.

My life sucks, but doesn't suck. Get it? Nope? Okay I'm too contradicting, never mind. Time for a trip with the boys.

Wait that sounds so wrong....
