Chapter Two
Luro sighed into her books. Her life was OVER.
She was in muggle school.
She'd been in muggle school before, true, but this was different. This was the year she would have gone to Hogwarts. This school wouldn't start teaching her potions or charms or defense against the dark arts or anything COOL.
It just taught boring, everyday muggle stuff.
Luro tripped over her own sad feet and fell face first, crashing to the ground, watching her books splatter all over the floor.
Oh no, she thought, I'm going to be late to English class!
She struggled to pick up her books, as some kids had kicked them around and a few others had stopped to laugh at her.
None took pity on her.
She wiped a tear as she opened the door to room 112, and her classmates leaned over in their desks whilst the teacher stopped the lesson and tutted to the interruption.
"Miss Truffle, I presume?"
She nodded her head shamefully.
"Well," the stern teacher continued, "that's three minutes and eighteen seconds late, Truffle, and if you will learn anything about me, this year, it is that I do not tolerate tardiness. Three and a half minutes after class!"
Luro stifled a sob and sat down in the only vacant seat; right in front of the teacher. If only she could have said, 'three and a half points from Gryffindor!' she thought, This is not going to be fun.
"As I was saying," she continued, "similes and metaphors are quite different parts of speech."
Yep.
This was going to be a long academic year.
***************
Luro threw her bag onto her bed, then exited her room and flopped on the sofa next to her mother.
"How was school today, dear?" her mother asked, fluffing her daughter's long, curly red hair.
"It was okay," she answered, pulling away. Luro's mother stopped playing with her hair.
"You know," she said enticingly, "I saw a few animals in the backyard earlier that Sparky hadn't eaten."
Sparky usually stayed in the mountains with the other dragons, but came down to their backyard at night to sleep, and sometimes in the day to simply play.
"Really?" Luro asked, her face brightening, "Like, magical ones?"
"Go see," her mother said, a sparkle in her eye.
Luro hugged her and bounded outside, unable to wait. She looked around the yard for any signs of life, but couldn't find anything. She did, however, find a cool-looking rock, a beautiful feather, a huge leaf and a tuft of cat fur.
She put them in two sections on the porch, one for flora and earth and one for fauna. She smiled and her new collection. There was a rustle behind her, and she turned around to find Goldie and her mother.
"Hey guys," she greeted the unicorns, "Where's Skully?"
The mother snorted, shaking her elegant mane, then stepped towards Luro, kneeling, inviting her to get on. She was unsure, but after a while she was sitting straight atop her back.
The feeling was amazing.
They trotted around gracefully, and Luro leaned in onto her neck at one point, touching the unicorn's horn. She was fine, until she reached the very tip.
She felt a buzz of energy. Her hand and the unicorn's horn were glowing. She tried to disregard this, but it became brighter. More tingly.
More magical.
The unicorn turned, and the horn tip was pointed towards the fauna pile, the feather and tuft of cat fur. It was then that the magic stretched out in a beam of light.
And it touched the tuft and feather.
The unicorn and her baby, shocked by the burst of energy, reared and ran off. Luro fell to the ground, getting a bit scraped but mostly unharmed. She lifted herself slightly and turned back to make sure they were okay. They seemed unharmed as they galloped away, so she decided not to worry too much and get up.
"That's the second time I've fallen today," she muttered to herself as she brushed off the dirt and grass. She looked at the porch, but where there was once a feather and tuft of fur, there was just a ball of pure white. But as she walked closer, she realized it was more than that.
It was a cat.
With wings.
