Chapter one
Rainpaw opened her eyes and looked around in confusion. Where am I? She wondered. Is this the medicine cat den? Rainpaw's neck and back hurt. What happened? Laying a few tail lengths away was Frozenpaw.
"Frozenpaw!" Rainpaw mewed. Maybe he can explain what's going on. Frozenpaw opened his eyes.
"Yes?" he asked, half asleep. Rainpaw noticed cobwebs wrapped around his leg. This is definitely the medicine cat den.
"What happened?" Rainpaw asked. As she looked around more she saw Silvermist and Stormwing, both badly injured. Rainpaw saw Frozenpaw's eyes light up. He ran over to her and pressed his nose into her fur.
"Rainpaw! You're alive!" He said excitedly. What does he mean? Rainpaw wondered.
"What do you mean? What happened to me?" Rainpaw asked as she looked at the cobwebs pressed against her. Frozenpaw looked confused.
"Don't you remember?" he asked, "You got attacked by a dog.." Rainpaw thought back to what happened yesterday. The last thing she could remember was her apprentice ceremony.
From this day forward, until she has earned her warrior name, this apprentice will be called Rainpaw. Shadowfrost, you are a loyal warrior and take care of your clan well. May you pass down all you know to this apprentice.
That was the last thing Rainpaw remembered before she woke up in the medicine cat den. "The last thing I remember is...becoming an apprentice," she said. What happened yesterday? Frozenpaw's eyes widened.
"Um...you've been an apprentice for a moon..." he said, worriedly. What does he mean? Rainpaw started to worry. What is he talking about? He's been an apprentice for a moon.
"No, you've been an apprentice for a moon," she said, getting even more confused. "What happened?" she demanded. She saw tears start to stream out of his eyes.
"I've been an apprentice for two moons..." Frozenpaw insisted, "And I told you. You got attacked by dogs." Rainpaw stopped listening. Why is he telling me these lies?
"That never happened!" she shouted, starting to cry. "What's going on!?" This is all just a dream, she told herself. She saw Frozenpaw start to cry. He turned to Leafflight.
"I think she has amnesia!" he cried. What are they talking about? Leafflight ran up to her, a worried look on her face.
"What's the last thing you remember?" she asked. Rainpaw looked around in confusion. What's going on? She focused. She needed to answer Leafflight's question.
"I was just given the name Rainpaw...and my mentor, Shadowfrost. The next thing I know I'm waking up here." Rainpaw started to get up. If no one will tell me I'll go outside and see what's happening for myself. Leafflight blocked her from leaving.
"I'd better tell the clan first," she explained, "Frozenpaw, stay with her." Rainpaw started to cry. Frozenpaw started sobbing with her. Rainpaw shook her head. It will all be okay, she told herself. Her and Frozenpaw sat in silence for what seemed like a moon before she heard a clan meeting being called.
"All cats old enough to catch their own prey join me for a clan meeting!" Birchstar called out. Rainpaw saw Stormwing try and fail to leave the medicine cat den. Was he injured by the dog too? She put her thoughts aside and listened. Finally Leafflight spoke.
"As you all know, dogs attacked some of our warriors yesterday and...Rainpaw got really hurt," she said. Rainpaw could tell she was having trouble finding what to say. Leafflight continued, "Well, this morning she woke up and...she doesn't remember the past moon of her life." Rainpaw heard several cats gasp. Frozenpaw got up and ran out of the den.
"I'll help her to remember everything!" he cried. Rainpaw sighed she wished she could believe him.
She listened closely as Leafflight continued, "It'll be best to treat her normally to get her memory back. Shadowfrost, you'll need to mentor her like you did when she first became your apprentice. Don't try to force her memory to come back." Rainpaw listened sadly. Over the course of two days I lost a month. How will I ever recover those memories? Rainpaw listened closely as Leafflight spoke again. "I don't know if she'll be able to get her memory back, but she'll be fine. She still remembers who she is, and all of you."
No I don't! I don't remember who I am, I remember my name! I remember who I was a moon ago, and who everyone else was a moon ago. I'm might as well be a moon younger. I'm not seven moons old, I'm six moons old. I won't be able to remember what happened, even if I know what happened. Whoever I really am is gone forever, those memories can't be made up. I'm not even Rainpaw anymore. Rainpaw shook her head. Don't talk like that, she told herself. She pushed her worries to the back of her head and continued to listen.
"Frozenpaw, you should spend some time with Rainpaw," she heard Leafflight say, "You two were good friends. Maybe you could go on a walk with her around the territory. You could explain everything to her." He can explain all he wants, but he can't make me remember.
"It would be better to do so when her injuries are better," she heard Frozenpaw say.
"Clan meeting dismissed," Birchstar said, speaking over him. Rainpaw listened as cats started to split up. Suddenly, Rainpaw heard Leafflight and Frozenpaw talking outside the medicine cat den.
Leafflight began, "I know this will be hard for you, but you need to try to help Rainpaw. Why don't you go spend some time with her." Good, thought Rainpaw, someone to answer my questions. Leafflight walked into the den. She walked up to Rainpaw to check her wounds.
"Your wounds will heal soon," Leafflight assured her, walking over to Silvermist. Rainpaw got up and stretched. She walked out of the medicine cat den, blinking to adjust her eyes to the sun. She slowly walked up to Frozenpaw. So many questions swirled around in her head, but one could answer them all.
"What's going on?" Rainpaw asked, barely louder than a whisper. Frozenpaw looked her in the eye. There was something there, some connection he shared with her, no, with Rainpaw, that she didn't remember.
"Come walk around the territory with me," he said. His voice was cold, not like a friend would talk to you. Well I'm not his friend, Rainpaw reminded herself, Rainpaw was. Frozenpaw continued, just a bit more friendly, "I need to explain something to you." Frozenpaw turned around and headed out of camp. Pausing for only a heartbeat, Rainpaw followed.
They stopped somewhere in the middle of the territory. Rainpaw turned to Frozenpaw. I need answers. "Frozenpaw...what happened?" she asked. She was so confused she just wanted to cry. Frozenpaw sighed.
"Well, you got attacked by dogs," he began, "and forgot everything that happened the last moon." Rainpaw sighed. Even after hearing that over and over again, she still hoped it was some kind of mixup. Now that she knew it was the truth, it was almost to much to bear. I don't know if I want to know the truth. But Rainpaw knew that she couldn't hide from the truth. Living in lies wouldn't help her. She took a deep breath and asked the question she feared the answer to.
"Will I be okay?" She asked, trying to hide her doubt. Frozenpaw stopped. He had a look of doubt in his eye for a split second, so short Rainpaw thought she might have imagined it, but it was there. That brief moment before he smiled at her like nothing was wrong. He's not telling me the truth, Rainpaw realized, he shares my doubts. But that moment was gone. He put on a smile.
"Of course you will," he said. He pressed his nose into her fur than pulled away, "Yes, I promise." Rainpaw wondered if he was trying to convince her or himself. "Now let's show you around the territory first," he said, changing the subject.
As they walked around Rainpaw continued, "So...I'm seven moons old?" Rainpaw knew the answer by now, but she couldn't stand the silence.
"Yep," Frozenpaw nodded. Something about his voice bothered Rainpaw. It sounded empty in a way. Rainpaw wondered if she was imagining it. Out of nowhere she suddenly felt like it was hopeless. What's the point in any of this! Why do they even bother calling me Rainpaw? I'll never be the same cat. This isn't the way it's supposed to be! Rainpaw stopped. She couldn't stand it. She felt like her paws were about to collapse under her. Maybe I don't belong in a clan. Maybe this isn't the life I'm supposed to live. It couldn't be that important to me if I can't even remember it! Rainpaw started to cry.
"Frozenpaw..." Rainpaw cried, barely able to keep herself standing, "Why can't I remember?" She couldn't hold her tears in any longer. She was full on crying now, not able to stop. She didn't care about making it look like she was fine with it anymore. If they want to worry about me they'll be wasting their own time. I'm not worth anything to this clan.
"I'm not so sure," Frozenpaw said in a gentle voice, "You did gat attacked by dogs. I know for a fact, next time I see a dog, I'm gonna whip it's tail." There was a hint of humor in his voice, but mostly anger. He hates those dogs as much as I do. But they didn't ruin his life. Rainpaw looked at Frozenpaw. She instantly started to cheer up. Maybe he will be able to do something...
"Frozenpaw..." Rainpaw found herself saying, "will you help me remember?" She looked at Frozenpaw, not sure if she wanted comfort or the truth.
"Of course," Frozenpaw promised. For the first time that day Rainpaw felt a trace of hope. For once she could actually come up with an idea that might help.
"Maybe if you take me to the place where the dogs attacked, I might remember something," Rainpaw said, trying to keep her excitement under control. Frozenpaw's eyes lit up.
"Yeah! Let's go!" He said before racing off. Putting a smile on her tear stained face, Rainpaw raced after him. Maybe this isn't so bad...
Frozenpaw stopped. Rainpaw smelled blood in the air, along with a stale dog scent. "This is it," he said as he walked over to a rock, "And this is where you laid when you got hurt." Rainpaw looked around. She didn't remember anything. She tried to hide her disappointment.
"I don't remember any of that," she quietly mewed. Before she knew it she was crying again. "I'll never remember." Frozenpaw frowned.
"You might not ever remember..." he said sadly. But his sadness quickly turned to determination, "But I know you will learn it all over again. You will learn your fighting moves, and who everybody in the clan was. I promise, everything will soon be back to normal." He sounded so determined, it instantly lifted Rainpaw's spirits. I can't give up yet. She decided to look on the bright side of things.
"I already know everyone in the clan. I remember you..." Rainpaw forced a smile, not for Frozenpaw, but for herself. "I'll be fine." Rainpaw saw a small smile on Frozenpaw's face.
"So...what places do you remember of the territory?" He asked. He sounded so determined, like he was on a mission.
"I remember the lake," Rainpaw said, smiling at the memory, "The first time I saw it I thought it went on forever."
"Didn't every kit?" Frozenpaw said, smiling. His smile made her feel like she could do anything. We must have been good friends.
"Come on! Let's go to the lake!" Rainpaw mewed excitedly, sprinting off. Yet something made her want to go back to the place where the dogs attacked and get a second look. She didn't remember anything, but something felt familiar. She pushed the thought away, running happily through their territory.
Rainpaw stopped in awe when she got to the lake. She heard Frozenpaw run up and stand next to her. "There will never be a time when I don't find the lake beautiful," she said. Rainpaw looked down into the water. There were fish swimming by. "I bet I knew how to fish," she sighed.
"You did," Frozenpaw mewed. Rainpaw looked at Frozenpaw. This cat is almost a stranger to me, yet he knows more about me than I do.
"What was I like?" Rainpaw asked. Frozenpaw smiled.
"Where do I start?" he said, smiling like you do when you look back on good memories. I'll look like that when I remember. If I remember... Frozenpaw continued, "Well.. you were great at hunting, and you were very brave and kind. You were also very loyal." That's always who I wanted to be. Rainpaw sighed.
"I just wish that I wasn't a completely different cat than I remember," Rainpaw said. She shook her head as if she could shake off her worries. "Let's go to other places in the territory." Frozenpaw nodded and ran off. Rainpaw smiled and followed. For a split second she felt like a normal apprentice, free of worries. But she wasn't.
Rainpaw followed him through their territory. It was weird. Everything was so unfamiliar to her. She was used to that, but now she knew that who she was now, this future version of herself, knew everything that she didn't know. She stopped beside Frozenpaw. She looked around. They were in a small open field of grass.
"This is where..." Frozenpaw began sorrowfully, "we always used to hang out.." Rainpaw could tell that he was holding back tears. She wanted to tell him that it was okay for him to cry, but she didn't.
"Leafflight said we were good friends," Rainpaw mewed, forcing a smile, "but you know that." Frozenpaw nodded, a tear slipping down his cheek. He sighed and sat down. Rainpaw sat down next to him in silence. I must mean a lot to him, she said to herself, Did he mean a lot to me? Frozenpaw's tail tip touched Rainpaw's for a second. He quickly pulled away. Rainpaw looked into his eyes. I might not be able to get my memories back, but I have to try. Rainpaw took a deep breath.
"Can you tell me stories about what happened to me in the past moon? I'll do whatever I can to remember." Even though that probably won't happen. Frozenpaw nodded. After a few seconds he purred.
"Well, there was this one time I was on a patrol and you were on a hunting patrol with your mentor and another warrior, and you jumped out from a bush and tackled me." He purred as he continued, "It scared our patrol at first, but they were quick to realize it was you." Rainpaw laughed. I should be embarrassed, she thought, but to me it never really happened. Frozenpaw laughed with her. "We always raced each other to see who could get the first fish," he mewed. Rainpaw frowned.
"I don't remember how to fish," she said sadly.
"Don't worry," Frozenpaw comforted her, "Shadowfrost will teach you." But for once, his voice didn't calm her. She lost control. I can't hide from this!
"It won't matter anyway! Don't you get it? Nothing can change the fact that I lost my memory! You can teach me what I learned again, but that won't change the fact that I forgot it. The memories I lost are lost forever. You can tell me about the stuff I would of remembered, but that won't bring back the memories! I won't remember spending time with you, I'll remember the stories. I know you know that!" Rainpaw laid her head down and cried. I can cry away all the memories I have left for all I care. "I just wish things would go back to normal," she sobbed. I don't even remember what normal is!
Frozenpaw's eyes were wide. She could tell that what she said hurt him. He turned his head and mumbled, "I do too.."
Frozenpaw stood up and forced herself to stop crying for long enough to say, "Thank you for the tour of the territory, but I think I'm going to go back to camp now." Before he could answer she turned around and ran towards camp, crying the whole way. She didn't look back, not once.
She ran into camp. She was about to go to the nursery, but she remembered that she became an apprentice yesterday. No, not yesterday, a moon ago. She went to lay in the apprentice den for the first time, the thirtieth time. All those memories, she said to herself, gone forever. She sighed and laid her head down on her paws. After a long time she drifted off to sleep.
