Chapter 1: Fangs
I drew an arrow from my case hanging from my satchel. Bringing the string of the bow back across my ear, I aim and shoot.
The badger hadn't even noticed me there. The arrow sank deep into its neck, a clean kill.
I picked up my prize and began searching for wood and stones to make a fire.
I find a place to make camp and pull out three pearls from my pocket. I started with 6, but had lost the other three earlier that morning when I was chased by a Tiger.
The three precious little things looked like glowing balls of moon in my hand.
I kept one and put the other two back in my pocket.
I kissed the little ball. Giving thanks to the universe for letting me keep the last three. (This may sound weird but just wait)
I threw the pearl to the ground and pink dust erupted from the white shells. They danced around me, forming a force field over my camp.
I began making a fire with my stones and sticks. By the time I had made a flame, darkness had fallen.
I took the small badger and morphed my hand into a large paw.
It was hard to keep from fully forming, but I had practiced most of my life and could stay half-Pock for awhile.
I ripped open the small badgers soft underbelly and took out its guts, I began to strip the meat off its bones and threw away all of the fur, guts and bones. I threw the meat into a pot and began to cook my last meal of the day over the fire.
By the time I finished the tender meat, I licked my lips, savoring the taste. My stomach still twisted with hunger. It was a small meal and I would have to get used to it.
I put my pot down next to the fire. As it burned on into the night, I curled up in a tight ball and fell asleep.

The birds awoke me. I sat up to stretch and yawn.
Staring off into the distance, a memory rolled through my head. I missed my litter-mates. I missed rolling around with them when we were little. When we grew older we hunted with the rest of the town. I became known for being the best at hunting with a bow and arrow.
They did this. I thought viciously. They took my pack away, and it's all their fault I'm stuck out here on my own.
Each night, Hexlings would swoop down into the city and pick off one Pocklim to devour. It was a dark and tragic time. We could do nothing but sit and watch.
Hexlings were creatures of black and white. Large talons and beady little eyes. They had a strong resemblance to birds but much much bigger. With shape beaks that could cut through skin like water.
The alpha male of the pack: Scar, had come up with the idea to attack the creatures when they raged down from the sky.
So, one night every one hid in the shadows and strong warriors jumped down from buildings in Pocklim form digging their claws into the large beasts necks.
They screeched and a few flew off into the night wounded, But the others took many of the brave warriors with them, to their giant nests resting on the tops of the clouds.
The plan had failed and the pack had been weakened greatly. There was nothing left to do but hide and hope.
My pack fell apart. Some Pocklims went crazy and ran into the unknown. They were eaten and killed by Hissers,Tigers, and Lions. The others stayed hiding indoors from the Hexlings. Locking all windows and doors. It didn't matter though. They were found and the Hexlings tore down doors, ripped open roofs, crashed through walls and ate everyone.
Only I was left. I was supposed to be killed last night. I cheated. Leaving the city and surviving on my own. Before I left, my mother told me there was another Pocklim in the forest of fog and he knew how to defeat the Hexlings.
My plan was to travel there to find him and save my kind. I stood up and brushed the dirt off my jean shorts. Stepping through the bubble of pink it vanished and so did the rest of my camp. My satchel hung from my shoulder carrying my arrows, pots and medicine.
I thought I saw something move in the bushes. I took my bow and grabbed an arrow.
Aiming towards the sound of leaves rustling. I felt eyes on my back.
Quickly turning around I saw glittering green eyes watching me from the shadows.
I blinked and they were gone.
It's gonna pay for spying on me! What is it? Lion,Tiger?
I was hoping it wouldn't be what I thought it was.
Again I felt the icy gaze of eyes on my back. I put my arrow back in my satchel and hung my bow from my shoulder.
Another feeling of eyes prickled through my back. This time it was stronger. I began to walk forwards, breathing faster than usual.
I heard a twig snap from behind me and I began to walk faster. The birds stopped chirping and it was too quite. I tripped on a root sticking up from the ground, collapsing into the bushes, I ducked farther into the undergrowth.
I heard more twigs snap and leaves crackle beneath weight.
Then the slow movement of something big.
A voice seemed to shake through the wild.
"Thossssssse who enter never leave."
It was whispery but at the same time loud.
No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't hear anything. It was like time itself had stopped.
My neck was beginning to hurt, the way my body was curled into the bush. All I could see was through a tiny gap near my feet.
The hairs on the back of my neck pricked, when I heard a slithering sound across damp earth and leaves.
Then I saw it. The thick body of a Hisser blending in with the tall green grass.
It slid through and it's tail seemed to drag on for miles. The body of a Hisser was as thick around as a door and the length of a hose.
I have heard stories of Hissers before and I never thought they were true, until now. They were right about how big it was, and definitely right about its way of hunting.
Something poked me in the side and I assumed it was a branch of the bush. But it poked me again and it felt bigger than a pokey branch.
I turned around and gazed into blazing blue eyes. I screamed and jumped out of the bush. Gazing around frantically for my predator. I ducked down low into the grass.
Big mistake.
I couldn't see the Hisser, but maybe if I tried to hide from it, like it was from me.....Something lifted me off the ground and I realized I had some how misplaced my hand and felt the smooth scales of the Hisser.
I was flown into the air and crashed into a tree. My ribs felt broken and my ankle was even worse.
My head was spinning but I was able to sit up okay.
I heard the most quiet but loud and frightening sound ever to be heard. The mist of the forest was suddenly swirling around me, I heard the slow slithering of a huge body across the wet soil.
My eyes darted from bush to bush, searching frantically for any signs of movement.
I was breathing hard and I almost screamed when something again, poked my arm.
I turned and saw......a boy..... He was about my age, with dark, messy hair and brilliant blue eyes.
"Follow me," he whispered, crawling towards a fallen tree.
I could hardly sit up, let alone crawl. But I was able to make it towards the log. I followed the unusual boy inside of the deep, hollow log. It was cozy inside and I was able to catch my breath.
It wasn't long before I heard the deep hiss of a large animal.
"None have EVER escaped from this forest, and NONE. EVER. SHALL."
Then, all was quiet, all I could hear was the beating of my own heart. We were being stalked like fat mice. I knew we'ed make an easy kill if we stayed here. This thing would find us, and eventually kill us.
"We have to go." I uttered.
The boy looked at me with fear in his eyes.
"If we move, we'll be killed."
A thunderous hissing sounded closer than before.
It was that moment when I thought of an idea.
"Follow me," I said. The boy stared at me in horror.
"You're crazy," he said.
"Yeah, whatever, we have to work together, now here me out."
I quickly explained my plan, the boy looked willing to follow my instructions and I was surprised he had agreed to do it.
We crawled out of different ends of the log, through the tall grass and up a tree.
I balanced on a thick branch, the pain in my side had vanished strangely fast, but I knew that was because I was a Pocklim.
I looked towards the boy and he waved, I don't know why, but I waved back. It was one of the strangest things I have ever done. Though, I am a Pocklim and being chased by a Hisser, so I guess you could say I've seen stranger.
Soon, we spotted the Hisser down below, slithering though the long grass and approaching the log. It's body was huge. About ten times thicker than any of the tree trunks.
The huge, terrifying creature suddenly, stopped. It was raising its head to look around. My eyes darted towards something next to it. Laying just below the branches of the tree it had flung me at.
My bow!
The satchel and case of arrows were still hanging from my back, but my bow! Oh, how could I have forgotten my bow?
The snake became suspicious and unsure of where we were. I looked towards the boy and he looked up, at me.
I motioned my hand towards the bow, lying next to the snake. He saw it, and understood what I was about to do. I took deep breaths and looked down at the Hisser. It's blazing, emerald green eyes seemed over-powering.
I slowly, crawled down the tree. Making sure I made as little noise as possible. Meanwhile, the Hisser had poked it's head into the log.
I was nearing the bow now. The Hisser looked up, I froze. All was still. It's eyes were staring right at the trunk of my tree. It looked like it was thinking.
I slowly, moved my gaze to the boy. He was wearing ragged brown pants and a ripped white t-shirt. His shaggy black hair hung over his light blue
eyes.
He moved his hand and picked up a pine cone. Suddenly, he threw the pine cone down. My eyes stretched wide. Horrified with what he'd done.
The pine cone bounced lightly off the top of the Hisser's head. The giant snake whipped its head around, forgetting all about me. Now was my chance.
I lung for the bow. I hang it over my shoulder. Great to have it back. I sit on a branch of the tree to catch my breath. The Hisser was now climbing the boy's tree.
It's thick tail wound around the trunk and it looked like the boy was trying to lead it in between branches, so it's long body would eventually get stuck. Great plan. I had to admit, he was fast. It looked like he had been born a monkey man. Swinging from branches and jumping out of the Hissers way.
I see the Hissers head suddenly stuck in between two huge branches. These trees were huge, so huge, the boy was running along the branches like a squirrel!
This was my chance. I slow my breathing to a steady pace and focus my aim in the center of the Hisser's head. Finally, I pull back and let it fly. The world spins slower than usual and I hold my breath when I see the Hisser break free from the branch and the arrow pierced somewhere along its neck than its head.
I missed. That boy would probably die now. Thanks to me. Calm down I have more. I grin when I realize the arrow must have perched the monster in a sensitive spot, because it was spitting and hissing with rage.
It flings it self around and spots me immediately. I have no idea how, maybe because of my intense body heat when I was moving up the tree as fast as I could.
The Hisser was climbing my tree, but this one was younger and not as if, most of the branches snapped beneath the great pythons weight.
I'm sorry I haven't updated in so long! I promise I will update at least every weekend from now on, but this week, I'll be writing a lot! I hope...
