Chapter 1

I'm going to die today. No one can stop me, because no one cares. I'm going to jump off this roof, and fall splat on the ground, then maybe all the pain will go away. I have nothing left in the world. And to think, it all started a few months ago.

. . . .

"1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8" We all say as we end our cheer leading routine. We're all out of breath, but we still give high-fives, and pat each other on the backs.

"Nice job girls." Coach Jill says.

It's almost competition season. I get changed in the locker room, then head home. I have my drivers test in just 2 days. I hope I pass, and get my permit. The bus drops me off at home, and I get out, and go through the front door.

"Mom, I'm home," I yell through the house. Dad isn't home yet. I go into my room, and start working on my homework. I think I liked it better when I was in 7th grade, instead of 10th. Homework is hard. I finally finish my math and English homework, when I get a text.

Hey, babe, go outside. I need to talk to you. I fear that Kyle is going to break up with me. We haven't spent too much time with each other lately. So I wouldn't doubt it if that's what it is. I walk out the back door. Kyle is sitting on my trampoline. I walk up to him. He smiles, and gives me a heart shaped box with chocolates inside. I kiss him on the cheek.

"Thank you." I whisper.

"I love you." He says. He has dark brown hair that goes down to his ear lobs. He's one of the bad boys at my school. I don't know why I like him, I just do.

"I love you too." I say. I lay down on the trampoline. I close my eyes, and let the autumn air surround me. I breathe in the cool air, then feel Kyle stroking my hair.

For some reason he always does that, like creepy, and for some reason I like it. I hear Dad's car pull up in the driveway.

"I guess you got to go." I say. Dad hates Kyle, and I think it's because he's one of the bad boys.

"Call you later." He says, then takes off to the other side of the creek where he lives.

I start jumping, and practicing my flips.

"Erica! I'm home!" Dad yells from the window. I smile, then hop off the trampoline to go see him. He's a doctor, he has to work late sometimes. I'm going to follow in his footsteps, and be a doctor, or a nurse. I run up, and give Dad a big hug.

"I missed you." I say.

"I missed you so much too." He says, then kisses the top of my head.

I walk into my room, when I get a call. I immediately think that it's Kyle, but it's Amy, my best friend who's also on the cheer team. We joke around saying that if one of us gets kicked out, or quits then we're not going to be friends anymore.

"Did you hear?" Amy says right when I answer.

"No, what?" I say slowly.

"Coach Jill is kicking one of the cheer leaders off the team." She says.

"What?!?" I say still not comprehending what she just told me.

"Well, if you get kicked off, I'm not going to be your friend."

"Same." I'm pretty sure we're just joking around. But I'm never sure with Amy.

. . . .

I wake up. Drivers test today after school. I don't want to get up, but I know I have to. I get a text from Kyle.

Good morning my little girl. Sometimes he can be so creepy. I get up, and take a shower. I play Heart Attack by Demi Lovatio, that's mine and Kyle's song, he picked it.

I head out to school. Kyle drives up on his motorcycle right when I get there.

"Hey," He says.

"Hey," I say.

"You have your drivers test today, are you nervous?"

"Pfft. No. Why would I be nervous for some dumb test?" I am bursting at the seams with nervousness.

He rolls his eyes and says okay. We walk into the building together. We have our first class together. English. I'm terrible at writing. I can't even write a good story. I like math better.

"I want you all to write a story about your life. You can even start now if you like. Just write about how your life is in a notebook, then make it be a story." She says. I sigh. Kyle knows how much I hate English. He rubs my arm.

. . . .

Lunch. I walk into the cafeteria with Amy.

"Ready for later?" She says. She has ginger red hair, and blue eyes.

"Yeah," I say. I don't know weather she's talking about my drivers test or one of the cheer leaders getting kicked off. "I'm hoping to make it."

"Me too, I don't want to get kicked off," She says. She wipes some of her red hair out of her eyes. "You have a drivers test tonight, don't you?"

"Yeah, I do," I take a deep breath. "I'm so nervous. Too nervous to eat anything." I walk through the line without getting anything. Sit down by Amy, Kyle walks up and sits right next to me. He puts an arm around my waist.

"Ready for tonight?" He reminds me.

"Kyle, don't remind me," I nudge him in the shoulder.

"But you said you weren't nervous, what's wrong?" He says joking around. I roll my eyes, and steal one of his chips.

. . . .

"Miss Erica?" The man says as he gets in the car. I smile at him. "Okay, lets begin." He sounds nervous.

I put the key in and turn it, the car turns on. He scribbles something down on his clipboard. I put the car in reverse, and start driving. I pull out of the school parking lot, and begin to drive down the road. He continues to write something down. I make a left turn. Then, a right. Then slam on my breaks because there's a squirrel in the road. Then, I make my way back to the school. I park, then turn the car off.

"Miss Erica," He starts. "You didn't pass." My heart sinks.

"W-why?" I say fighting back tears.

"You didn't turn on your signal when you turned, and when you stopped for that squirrel, if someone was behind you, you would've gotten in a car accident. I can't let you pass." I can barely breathe. Focus. Move.

I nod my head and walk out. I get ready for cheer practice. Amy comes up smiling.

"Hey how'd it go?" She says.

"I didn't pass," I say.

"Erica, stop playing games," She stares at me expectantly. "Oh, you're not joking." She wraps me in a tight hug. "I'm so sorry."

"Well, let's get in there, and practice, one of us is getting kicked off the team soon, and it's not going to be me," I say. She nods. Walks in there with me.

"As you all know, one of you is getting kicked off the team in a few days," Coach Jill says. "So bring your best, attitude and everything, so then I can pick who's leaving." We start.

. . . .

How'd you do? Kyle sends me a text. I flop on my bed, and start crying about it. I got my hopes up for nothing.

Can you come over? I say back. 5 minutes go by, and I hear Kyle's motorcycle outside. He comes into my room. Tear streaks mark my red cheeks.

"I didn't pass," I say. He doesn't say anything to me. "He said that I didn't pass because I would've gotten into an accident if I stopped for a squirrel."

"That's why you just have to take it again," He says. He has some hair hanging in his eyes, and I just want to cut it off.

"No," I say. "I didn't pass this time, I won't pass again."

He mumbles something under his breath that sounds like, "You'll get over it,"
