Win Some, Lose Some
It landed on me, its jaws opened wide to make the killing bite...
(Drago's Pov)
Saliva and blood dripped onto my face as I let out a terror-filled screech, and held my hands in front of my face, bracing myself for the pain of the fangs digging into my throat as it thrust its wide jaws at my neck. Time seemed to stop and the world moved in slow motion as I watched its red-stained fangs get closer and closer to my neck, the sound of Storm screeching the word 'no' at the top of her lungs sounding in the background, when it fell limp on top of me, it's dark crimson drops dripping all over me. I was frozen, my red eyes wide in shock. Dascar's hatchet was buried deep into the back of the demon's scull where it attached to the spine, fresh, hot, red streams bubbles up from the wound that ended the demon's life.
"Go back to burning in hell, where you belong," Dascar murmured to the dead creature, grabbing hold of the hatchet's handle and yanking it out. More blood gushed from the creature, and as the blood hardened to a scab, it turned from a dark crimson to a menacing jet black. "Drago, you okay?" he ask me, dragging the cold, limp carcass off me with a grunt. His red eyes were filled with concern as he pulled me into a hug.
"I'm fine, thanks. Wait... Aren't we forgetting something?" I said, pulling my knife out of the carcass and wiping the blood from it using the demon's pelt. After about three seconds, my brother and I looked up at each other, our matching red eyes wide with realization as we shouted at the same time,
"Storm!"
We turned to see Storm, who was laying slouching against the tree she had been clinging to for dear life only a few minutes ago, a pool of red growing under her. Her hair was messed up and tangled as if she had ran straight through a hurricane. Hot tears streaked across red cheeks, trickling down to leap off her jawbone. Blue eyes were glazing over, their gaze trapped in a daze. Red streams flowed from the many gouges and scratches on her legs. Her expression was unreadable, she looked as if she were blankly staring off into space. The forest around her seemed dead silent, as if the world was holding its breath to see if she would make it. I felt my heart shatter as I took in the sight of her, she looked so broken, so.... Frail... So delicate... As if she would shatter at someone's touch.
"Storm! Hey! It's gonna be alright!"
"Kid! Hey! Storm, are you alright? Answer me!" Dascar and I shouted, our voices overlapping each other's as we raced over to her. Dascar kneeled down next to her, and put his hand on her shoulder. "Hey, you alright?" Dascar ask, grabbing her chin to help her look up, concern shining in his eyes.
"I-I'm fine..." Storm answered, giving a weak smile in attempt to hide her pain. Both my brother and I could see right through her. "D-don't worry about m-me guys. I'm f-fine," Storm managed to choke out, trying to hide the fact that she needed help. I felt rage fill me, why is she lying to us? Does she think we're stupid enough to think she's okay? I opened my mouth to say something bitter, but my brother beat me to it.
"Hey! Don't you lie to us! You have to start caring about yourself, or we're gonna have problems, and your not going to like it! So suck it up and let us help, stop trying to be an angel! Your not being a burden, so don't think for one second that you are!" Dascar hissed, he looked like he was ready to slap her. His gaze was burning with anger, his teeth clenched and his hands were clenched into fists. His gaze softened when her tears started flowing faster and soft sobs racked her body. "Hey, it's okay... I'm sorry for yelling... I was just... Worried..." Dascar said gently, gingerly hugging her shoulders with one arm. "We need to get her back to camp so I can fix up her legs." Dascar said, lifting her bridal style so he could carry her.
"W-wait, the firewood... It's behind the bushes over there..." Storm murmured, pointing to a bramble bush, and sure enough, there was a pile of firewood.
"It's fine, it's not important right now. Hey, Drago can carry it, don't worry," Dascar told her quietly, while I nodded and picked up the firewood. Soon, we were walking back to the camp. It was silent, besides the sound of dead leaves crunching under our feet. I was relieved that the only one hurt was Storm, yet I was worried and angry that the one hurt was Storm. She's so innocent, she shouldn't have experienced that... She didn't deserve this...
I was snapped out of my thoughts when Dascar said, "Drago, get one of the medicine bags. Grab the bandages, too." I did as I was instructed, and brought the bag over to the shelter, where Dascar already had Storm laying on one of our three sleeping bags, and her back was supported by a large log to keep her sitting up.
Grabbing the ointment, Dascar took a deep breath before turning to Storm. He had a bucket of icy cold water we had gotten from a nearby stream. Pulling a sponge from the medicine bag, he dipped it into the icy water and then brought it to Storm's leg. She let out a pained yelp, tears pricked at the corners of her eyes. "It's okay, I know it stings... It's going to be okay..." Dascar whispered to her, his eyes filled with remorse. By now, the bleeding was slowing down and would probably stop altogether soon. Ointment in hand, Dascar unscrewed the lid, then looked to Storm. He pursed his lips before saying, "Now, this is gonna sting, just... Bear with me now..." Coating his fingers with the ointment, Dascar gently held Storm's right leg, and touched one of the gouges with the ointment. An agonized screech sounded from Storm, tears falling from her cheeks as her face contorted in pain. Dascar's face held a grim look, I could tell he didn't like this at all. He gingerly rubbed more ointment into her wounds, earning soft sobs, whimpers, and occasional scream.
I didn't like this at all, I didn't like the fact that Storm was in pain, but it had to be done. If the wounds got infected, she would be more pain than she was now. Eventually, I had to go outside of the shelter and shut the entrance with a second tarp because I couldn't watch or listen to Storm suffer more. I waited outside the tent and ended up starting the fire. It was difficult because I couldn't think of anything else but how Storm was doing. She was like the little sister we never had... Dark anxiety gnawed at me, eating away at my patience.
I sat on a large log I had rolled up close to the fire, when the grey tarp that covered the entrance to the shelter was lifted. I instantly looked up, my red eyes looked at Dascar, reading his expression as if it were a book. I didn't like what they read. Dascar's face was tired and fearful, something bad definitely happened. Dread filled my heart and my face morphed into an expression of concern. My eyes held a questioning look, and Dascar seemed to understand what I was asking.
"Storm developed a fever due to blood loss. She's very weak..." he said, and I was sure he looked like he was about to cry. I have never seen Dascar cry before. This must be bad... Agony filled my senses. My heart felt like it was stabbed over and over, my feelings burned with sadness and greif. Something in my chest felt heavy. I've never felt like this before... I didn't like the feeling either.
(??? Pov)
"They did what? Hmm..." I growled.
"Y-yes my queen, we are still gathering i-information about the 'incident,"
"So, they've killed one of my izenchi, have they? My poor demon izenchi... Oh well. Guess we will have to get rid of our little... Problem." I smirked, a coy smile playing at my lips. I dragged one of my long claws across the arm of my throne, leaving a clean line in its path.
"Y-yes my queen, what shall we do?"
"Nothing, for now. I have a plan, but now is not quite the right time to put it into action. But soon, soon my dear friend, the time will come. We just have to be patient." I said, an insane grin spreading across my face.
