Chapter 7

"For the love of god, Lorenzo, slow down!" I hissed out, grabbing onto the handle above the door. The car whirled with the speed. Without touching the signal light, we went zooming around the corner, tossing me towards the center console. "You're going to kill us!"

"Oh, quit your whining it's not that bad," he snapped back, glancing down at the GPS to see where we were from our destination. He glanced up in time to swerve around a pedestrian crossing through the road.

"You're speeding just about killed someone!" I retorted back, tucking myself further into the seat, my grip tightening on the handle. I couldn't force myself to even think about closing my eyes. They stayed open wide, glued to the road in hopes of keeping us from crashing.

"I decided a while back that one should see a speed limit sign as just a recommendation of the speed you can go." I rolled my eyes at his thought process, eyeing the GPS. Another corner was coming up, and I felt my stomach drop.

"This is a 55 mile per hour zone, Lorenzo!" A car honked in protest as we zipped through an intersection with reckless abandonment.

"What's your point?" he asked distractedly, his attention straying away from the conversation as the car sped around another corner, throwing me into the window. I hissed, my shoulder throbbing from the impact. That's going to bruise tomorrow.

"You're going 80!" I cried out to him, daring myself enough to raise a hand to point towards the evidence before lowering it quickly to grip onto the nearest ledge.

"I like living life on the edge," he retorted, the GPS dinging with arrival. He sent me a quick smirk before the car spun. A petrified scream ripped from my throat as I was thrown against the window. The world stilled, my breath coming out heavy, as I glanced around the stilled area.

He had fucking spun us across the street into a parking stall.

"I would normally say that that was awesome, but you scared me shitless, so screw you," I panted out, pushing displaced hairs back into place and out of my face.

"Well, aren't you a little bucket of sass," he crooned, stepping out of the car as the doors slid upwards. "Come on, we don't have time to waste. The time has well passed!" I grumbled as the door on my side slid up. I mocked his words silently as I trailed behind his fast-paced steps. The doors opened to greet us.

The lobby was a lot nicer than the last. The ceiling reached all the way to the top of the building, little glowing globes danced and hovered in the air to provide lighting. Balconies and railings lined the square shape, the levels of rooms able to look out and down at the lobby.

The concierge table was rounded. The wood was polished to the point of reflection. A rectangular, slightly bowed screen rested behind the curved table. As the two of us stepped closer, the screen flickered to the point where a digitalized human AI appeared, smiling at us kindly.

"Welcome, how may I help you?" he asked in a surprisingly smooth tone.

"We need access to the room 374. The person in there is expecting us." The AI paused for a moment, a loading symbol flashing over the screen before the AI's human persona smiled.

"Yes, of course! Take the elevator up to floor five. The door should be on the left side of the wing." An elevator slide open by itself behind us, causing our heads to turn back towards it. Ren checked his watch quickly.

"We have two minutes left," he rushed out. Simultaneously we hurried into the elevator, with Ren spamming the fifth floor button. The front of the elevator that overlooked the hotel. The rest was a reflective metal, blurred just enough to distort our reflection.

The doors slid close, the elevator lifting us up past the floors. Ren kept his eyes on the watch, counting down. The doors slid open at the same time as he gave us a time update.

"Thirty seconds!" He bolted out of the elevator, going down the left side. I was hot on his heels, mentally steeling myself to possibly stop someone in their tracks.

"5 seconds!" Ren called out positioning himself infront if the door.

"3, 2, 1!" He went to kick the door open. I braced myself as his foot met the door, ready to pounce.

Only to be throw against the railing behind us as an explosion threw the door of the hinges and heat licked and singed our skin. I groaned, laying on the floor. I picked my head up a bit, looking to see how Ren was.

"You good?" I asked in a strained voice. A muffled moan rose from Ren as he rolled over on to his back.

"I came here expecting to whip some ass, not having mine literally get exploded."

He was fine.

"I'll take a Big Mac with a large drink and extra fries," I ordered tiredly to the fast food worked sporting a black hat with an M decorating the front. It was obvious they were trying not to stare, but were clearly failing. Their mouth hung open most of the time slightly from shock as their eyes kept darting upwards to take me in.

'They look like they were in some type of accident! Should I call the cops? Do they need an ambulance? Wait... why would they be ordering fast food if they were injured and in need of medical assistance. I'm sure they're fine. Yeah, they're totally fine...'

"Anything else I can get you?" the cashier asked instead, planting an uneasy smile on her face. I shook my head no. She told me the amount, and I paid it, telling her the name for the order before finding the spot that Ren had picked out already. I slid into the seat across from him, slouching down and sighing loudly. He cleared his throat.

"You look..." he started off, his eyes wondering over my face as he tried to find the right words to describe me.

"Beautiful, I know. Can we move on?" I cut him off, sitting up straight, so I could rest an elbow on the counter.

"Yeah, sure, lets go with that," he responded, his tone teasing and light. "The heat was so hot, that I think that it actually singed your eyebrows off, and let me tell you, the Mona Lisa look does not work for you."

'God, she actually looks kind of hot? How can the blast of a bomb make it look like she just rolled out of bed after having crazy sex? I mean, except for the soot marks and-'

"Are you sure you don't want food?" I interrupted his train of thought, moving out of his mind that I had unintentionally invaded. He nodded his head in confirmation. One of the workers called out my name, and I slide out of the seat, bracing my hands against the table for leverage.

"By the way," I started sweetly, sending him a smile. "Your eyebrows actually got singed off." A dramatic gasp flew from his mouth as he reached for his forehead. He quickly found out that his eyebrows were actually still there. A string of curse words were thrown towards me, but I was already well on my way, holding back a chuckle as I grabbed my order.

The worker handed me my tray, shooting me a look of concern.

"Are you okay?" she asked hesitantly. I smiled reassuringly at her.

"Don't worry about me, I just got back from a bomb of a time." She nodded in response, and I turned to go back to the table. I set the tray down, grabbing the drink cup and heading towards the fountains. I filled my cup up with a drink before heading back to the table.

And noticed my burger in the clutches of my partner.

I stepped quickly back to the table. Now the burger was being raised by mouth hands towards his mouth. I felt my heart speed up at the sight. Setting my drink down, I cleared my throat intentionally.

"Put the burger down, or I will shoot you in the knee," I said hotly, planting a palm down on to the table. "You have put me through the worst driving experience I will ever have, I've been blown up by a bomb, and you're going to try to eat my burger?" Ren paused, his mouth hanging open in preparation for the bite.

"You don't have a gun." Without another word, he continued to go towards his mouth. My eye twitched in irritation as I put forth the effort to dig into his mind and freeze him. His hands stopped abruptly, confusion spread over his eyes. They flickered over to me suspiciously as I plucked the fast food burger from his hands and took a large bite out of it. I released my efforts, watching as Ren instantly relaxed.

"What was that?" he growled with a hostile tone. I shrugged as I chewed, swallowing the bit before speaking.

"It's an ability I have. I can freeze people for a moment of time. It's commonly known in our society as Mind Binding," I spoke, watching the cogs turn in his head.

"Are there any other things I need to know about you?" he ground out, grumpily eyeing my burger in my hands.

"Omnilingualism," I managed out around my burger sounding more like "Ommiwinhuarwism". He stared at me blankly, an eyebrow raised. I held up a finger as I chewed, turning it in a processing circle as I continued to chew before swallowing.

"Omnilingualism. It's where if someone is thinking in another language, my mind can process it into an English translation. Any language you think in, I know it. I can't hear the original language words, so it doesn't help in learning other languages before you ask," I explained, watching Ren's eyes light up in understanding.

"So like, if we had a foreign terrorist held captive you could like, go in and just some mind tricks just know what he's thinking and relay it?" I nodded to his example, grabbing a few fries and sticking them in my mouth.

"Oh," I said with my mouth full of food again. I swallowed quickly to speak. "I also can Mind Walk, which allows me to enter a person's mind and see what they're seeing. I'm not good with it, I normally end up throwing up for a day or so straight afterwards, so I don't use it ever."

"I'm glad you can't. That's a whole new level of invasion," Ren muttered under his breath, looking down at the table. Soon he grabbed some of my fries, shoving them into his mouth before I could do anything about it.

"Lorenzo?" I started off, gaining his attention. He chewed quickly, sending me a smile meant to charm me into forgiveness. "How do you spell fries?"

He looked at me in a questioning way before responding, "F-r-i-e-s, why?" I smiled at him condescendingly. I snatched up the container that held my fries, sticking them into a corner on my side of the table.

"Exactly. There's an 'I', but you know what there isn't in fries? A 'we', so next time we get food, buy your own damn meal!" He held his hands up in surrender, twisting his mouth into a look that said he respected my words.

"Whatever you say boss!"
