Week 1 (---7---)

One of the purest forms of expression is the Poem.

Like us, it comes in many shapes and sizes and allows us many different outlets to express our feelings and to show our creative inner soul.

There are many different types of Poetry and though each and every one is different, they all share one common trait.

They were created.

Someone, somewhere, took the time, sat down and imagined a way to better express himself or herself.

Since I was never one to conform, I decided a few years back to try and create my own Poetry styles.

Some said I did it for self gratification. A way to blow my own horn, more or less.

Most accepted it for what it was. My right to express myself in any way that I choose.

Truth is, I simply got bored and wanted to try something new.

With the Poet Pub's 3rd anniversary, on the horizon, Myna and I have decided that May will be all about creation.

Our monthly Poetry Prompt is just such a challenge and our competition for May will be a 4 part challenge, giving you the opportunity to see just how simple creating your own Poetry style can be.

Must be. After all I have created a half dozen or so.

I will be offering a different Poetry style each week for you to try.

To start it all off, I have chosen ...

....... 7 .......

A very simple style and an exercise in saying as much as you can in 7 simple words.

The first part consists of 4 words.

They do not have to be connected but must all start with the same letter.

playful

pretty

petite

perky

The second part is the lead in to the theme of the poem.

2 words only. Any two words, but to make the poem a perfect '7' they should start with the same letter as the first part of the poem.

(But this is not critical as it may not always be possible, but that will be another challenge of this style)

put plainly

The third part is the theme of the poem.

Again this word should start with the same letter as the first part and it is the word that ties the whole poem together.

(It is also the title of the poem)

perfect

That is it.

7 simple words that simply make the point that you are trying to make.

Here is the completed poem.

This is an example of what would be considered a perfect '7'.

perfect

.

playful

pretty

petite

perky

.

put plainly

.

perfect

A very simple style.

Here is another example this is of the style but a variation.

distinctive

.

dented

damaged

dirty

dulled

.

but always

.

distinctive

So that is it.

Give it a try and have fun with this very simple yet challenging style.

For Week 1, we will allow 3 poems per Poet.

Please send only one Poem per day, as we expect high volume for this competition.

There will be a new challenge each week, but we will accept poems for any week, until the end of the month.

There will be a separate winner for each week, which means 4 more chances to be a part of the Poet of the Year competition.

Good Luck.
