Chapter 5 Welcome

John sighed as both Nick and Leola started walking away from both siblings. He didn't care if Nick started hating Kara or not. All he cared about was that his sister wasn't harmed in any way; regardless of her starting the fight. He placed a hand on her shoulder, and she swiped it away from him.

"John, this isn't the time. Don't tell me what I did was wrong. Do you think I don't know that? Do I need to be reminded of everything wrong about me? You seem to want me to be perfect, right?" Kara felt weak from using all of her strength to defend herself and her friends. Even though she was drained, she restored her physical appearance by charging herself up with adrenaline. She didn't want her brother to start pitying her right now, or ever.

"Of course not! Perfection is far from anything I would want. That's very hard to achieve, Kara. You know that. I just want you to not get into fights that might harm you, and possibly something you might regret in the future. You're my sister, and I care about your well being."

Her shoulders slumped as she just wanted to change the subject, "Hey, I have a quick question to ask you."

John rose a brow, "Yeah, shoot."

"Did you know that girl? The one that NAME mentioned?"

"Katie McKay? I believe so. I mean, I'm not positive since I don't really know her last name. I did meet a girl today named Katie, though. I'm curious if it was her. I kind of wish now that we did get to see her, but under better circumstances, of course."

"Yeah... Me too. I wanted to see her regardless, though. Wait... I just realized something important that we didn't even get."

"What's that?"

"We don't even know what hospital it's at."

"I would assume that they would bring her to the Outermatic hospital. That's usually pretty popular around here, and one of the hospitals that most ambulances would bring their patients to. Especially since they have a wide variety of medical, physical, and mental problems that they do. I always found it fascinating in my opinion."

"At times like this, I wish more hospitals would be like the Outermatic hospital."

"That would be cool, but they might not get as many patients that are treated well than the others. Of course, I am not saying that other hospitals will do a bad job at what they do. All I am saying is that some people can't always imitate what others do. Each hospital has their own thing that they are best known for, because of how well they can do what they do. If they were all the same, that might be a hard competition."

"Wouldn't it be easier if they, like, had different prices. Like, some prices of hospitals were cheaper than hospitals?"

John nodded, "That is true. Though that will have to depend on how good their services to their patients are, and like I've mentioned, how well they do their job just in general."

Kara nodded understanding John's position on the matter, "That makes sense. I guess you're better at this stuff than I am, and you don't even work in any sort of hospital. I'm guessing you did research on this?"

He shrugged, "Eh, a little bit. I was curious, and part of it was for a project in school that I did one year. I didn't need too much information about it. I just had to argue about whether the people that work at the hospitals usually do good jobs or not, and say why the diversity of the different hospitals were good, and so on. Truth be told, I don't remember everything, just chunks of it."

"Well you knew enough to be able to stump me in my own thoughts. I say you did a pretty good amount of research on your part."

John scratched the back of his neck with a smile, "Thanks, sis. Glad I can count on you to make me feel better," he added in a little bit of extra teasing just for her.

Kara laughed, not able to help herself, "No problem! Anything for my big brother!"

Katie grumbled slightly to herself, wondering what was going on. She sat up quickly, but it only resulted in immediate regret as the world started spinning around her, and she felt like she was going to pass out once more.

"I wouldn't have done that if I were you. You need to lay down and relax. We'll take good care of you."

Katie almost jumped off of her support table that was right under her. Though, she still had no idea where she was, and she didn't expect hearing a voice near her, "Who are you? Where am I? Where are you taking me?"

"Calm down. I won't hurt you. You are currently in an ambulance truck right now, and being taken to the hospital to be checked out, then we will help send you home."

"What? What's wrong with me? I don't think there's anything wrong with me. All I remember is passing out from having a panic attack. Did you find something wrong with me?" her brain ran as fast as her mouth, and she couldn't control herself when it came from asking so many questions.

The voice sounded to be a female, "Hey, it's going to be alright. There's nothing wrong with you. Don't worry. We had been called to come and assist you, but what I would assume they would either be your friends, family, or people that had just found you passed out, and were kind enough to help you out by calling us. We have been just making sure that your body signatures were stable, and that you were still breathing. Thankfully though, you are awake now."

"Will you let me go since you know that I'm alright?"

"We will, don't worry, Katie," the older woman gave her a warm smile.

"Wait... How do you know my name?" Katie was wary of this stranger that she had just met.

"There was technology that was released this past week that can identify anyone if they are not able to reply to the simple question, "Who are you?" or "What is your name?"

"That sounds kind of... creepy. Couldn't anyone just use this information, and steal it for their own personal use or something? That sounds very dangerous."

"I actually had that same concern as well, but we were soon reassured that this will be strictly used for professional use only, such as this."

Katie was skeptical still, "How do you know if whoever created this will keep their word?"

"I don't. I can only hope that they do. As interesting as it is, we'll just have to see for ourselves if its usefulness will come into play in the near future," she returned another smile as she brushed her bangs out of her eyes. There was some strands of grey hair, but the chocolate color outshone all of the silver that ever existed. Though her eyes were dark as Katie's, her eyes shone brighter than ever, and Katie started to wonder why this older woman looked slightly recognizable to her.

Katie bit her lip slightly, asking a question that she knew she would regret sooner or later, "Hey... um... I was wondering if I could ask you something. Since, you know, there's not much we can do here as it is."

"Of course, Katie!" the woman piped up. "What would you like to ask?"

"Have we ever met before? You look very familiar for some reason, and I'm still not understanding why you do."

The woman smiled as a wise man would be as he gives his advice to a lost young man, "Possibly. People meet others without always realizing it. Sometimes we remember them, other times we don't. In this case, maybe meeting me is locked in your memory somewhere. You know what they say, "it's a small world after all."

Katie giggled softly, feeling comfortable around this woman, and she loved it. She didn't feel comfortable all that often with people. Though with this stranger, she felt like she knew her longer than they have been together in this vehicle. Her smile felt real, and she didn't feel so nervous as she had felt when she had first woke up. She enjoyed hearing the woman's laughter. It was sweet and warm, and it matched everything about her, even though Katie knew that she didn't know her that well. All she knew that she was very easy to get along with.

"Thank you for your small comment that you made. That made my day."

The woman laughed heartily, "You're welcome, Katie! Anything for our patient. I love volunteering to help with the patients since I love helping people out. It feels more like a passion than a job to me."

Katie was impressed, "Wow! Really? That's honestly really cool. I find that there aren't too many people who like their jobs, or put all their effort and energy into these jobs that they work at."

She nodded, "Yeah, and the reason tends to be because they are bored and tired of their jobs. Yes, maybe your job isn't what you want currently, but it's something that helps bring food to the table, and gives you more of a reassurance that you can survive even when paying your bills. That's what I believe matters the most."

Katie agreed more than she ever had agreed to anything before, "I totally agree with what you said. I guess you could say that there are many people out there that don't have jobs, whether they have a hard time finding it, or something happened to them where it prevents them from getting a job, ever. I always find that sad. I've seen homeless people lying on the streets and are having to cover themselves by either curl themselves into a ball, and/or have a blanket that I'm betting that isn't even that warm for them."

The woman agreed, "Yes, it's pretty depressing when you actually think about it," she heard a male voice in the front seat of the truck as he called out to them.

"We are approaching the hospital now. I'm assuming that the girl Katie has woken up?"

"Yes, she is. Thank you, Frank."

"Anytime, ma'am."

The woman returned her full attention towards Katie, "We're here. Once you're inside, make yourself at home."

Katie nodded, "Thank you for everything. You didn't have to do what you've done. You've been a bigger help than what I could ever ask for. Thank you so much."

The woman's smile grew from Katie's compliment, "Thank you so much, Katie. I'm so glad that I have been able to help you. I hope to continue to help any way I can. Hopefully I might be able to be your nurse from time to time when we switch off."

"That would be cool," she then remembered a vital detail that she forgot to mention. "Oh, um... Hey, I actually didn't get your name as well."

"I apologize. I completely spaced it out as well," she chuckled softly. "My name is, Karen," she reached out her hand in Katie's direction. "It's a pleasure getting to know you, Katie. I hope the car ride wasn't too terrible for you."

Katie giggled, "It could have been worse. Though, I surprisingly enjoyed this little ride thanks to you and what you've done so far. It's a pleasure to meet you as well, Karen."

The back doors soon opened as a man grinned at the two women. He then focused his attention towards Katie in a friendly manner, "Welcome to the Outermatic hospital."
