Chapter 13: His Breakdown
Aarav's POV
There is just darkness in front of my eyes, I can't see myself. This truth is killing me from inside, my studies are left incomplete. I wanted to become a support for my parents but now I was a burden on them.
I questioned my father "Dad.. main sach mein ab kabhi nahi dekh paunga?"
He was silent, I expected a response in my favour but his reply broke me "nahi dekh paoge.. India ke best doctors ko tumhari report bheji maine sabka ek hi jawab tha"
I gave him a side smile which was not genuine. He touched my face and said "par hamara pyaar toh kum nahi hoga na? tumhari parwah pehle bhi karte they ab bhi karte hai aur hamesha karenge.. and don't even think again ye koi sympathy hai ya tum bojh ban gaye ho tumpar samjhe"
I know they love me but still, I have become the real reason for their grievous distress. I heard my mother's voice "lunch taiyar hai.."
"Chalo dining table par" Vineet spoke but I was in no mood to move anywhere.
Ruhana spoke "yahi kar lete hai.."
"Ruu.. what is this? Tumhe pata hai na mujhe Chilli Paneer bilkul pasand nahi hai" Vineet said..
"Lekin Aarav ko toh pasand hai na.. Tumhe nahi khana hai toh tum apne liye kuch aur bana lo" Ruhana argued with him.
"Nahi kha hi leta hun.. I am very lazy to cook" Vineet said.
"Dad main.. Aapke liye" I paused.. Realising the situation.
Silence prevailed in the room for a few minutes, I won't be able to cook anything which I loved to do the most.
"Chal... muh khol thanda ho jayega khana nahi toh" Ruhana said, I opened my mouth and felt something wet inside my mouth in between my teeth. I bit it and it was indeed my favourite food.
Vineet's phone rang "haa.. Okay aata hun main.."
"Ruu mujhe urgently office jaana hoga tum iska khayal rakhna jaldi aane ki koshish karunga" He spoke.
Ruhana replied "haan thik hai.."
I felt a hand on my head, but couldn't recognise whose touch it was. I smiled a bit..
Ruhana fed me the food, I was done after a few bites "bas maa.." I refused to eat more.
"Aarav.. Tumhari chot abhi thik nahi hui hai.. Khaoge nahi toh thik se toh dawai asar nahi karengi" She said caringly.
"Maa please.. Bhook nahi hai" I requested her but she refused to listen to me. I gave up, and finished the food. I felt her touch on my hand and she kept something on my palm.
"Dawai hai.. Khao" she said.
I put it inside my mouth, she handed me the glass and I drank the water. She took away the glass from me and cupped my face "tum aaram karo main bahar hi hun.. Thik hai"
I shook my head in yes and I heard her heals sound fading away. It seemed she had left the room.
I heard my father's sound after about two hours. He was talking with my mother and it was loud enough for me to hear.
"aadat nahi hai Ruhana iss tarah shanti ki.. Jabtak wo mujhe na sataye main usse ladun nahi sukoon nahi milta tha..." he said.
Ruhana replied "janti hun Vineet, par filhaal halat hi aur haii.. Mujhe bhi toh tum dono ko statue karke chup karne ki aadat thi.."
Tears brimmed down my eyes hearing their words. I felt someone entering the room, I wiped off the tears immediately.
Vineet asked "Aarav dinner?"
I denied "nahi Dad sona chahta hun..."
I lay down on the bed and turned to the other side. I felt his soft touch on my forehead and his voice "kuch chahiye toh bula lenaa hmm"
I closed my eyes and tried to sleep. I dreamed about Samar's brother whom I meet on the day of my accident.
"main bebas insaan ghut ghutke jeene ke alawa kya kar sakta hun"
I ride my bike and saw kids crossing the road, I turned my bike and hit the truck which was approaching from another side. I fell off and hit my head hard on the rock "aaahhhhh"
I stood up with a jerk and shouted "andheraaaa maaa... Maa"
After a few seconds, I felt a touch on my face "Aarav... Aarav"
I was hell scared, she cupped my face and said "shant ho jaoo.. Sab thik hai tum ghar pe ho"
"andhera light..." I paused when she said "tumhari aankhein"
She pulled me into her embrace and caressed my head trying to calm me down. I was feeling so protective in her arms, I tightened my grip around her and said "kahi mat jaao"
"yahi hun main..." she assured me and kissed my forehead. I smiled lightly with closed eyes and slept peacefully.
The next morning, I opened my eyes and fell off the bed. I felt a pair of hands grabbing me. He said "aarav sambhal ke.. Chot lag jaati tumhe"
"Dad.. Wo.. Kuch dikha Nahii" I said in a low tone.
"pata hai mujhe, aadat nahi hai.. get up" he helped me stand up.
It was a daily routine now, he helps me in bathing. While my mother feeding me the food. I don't even remember how many days have passed.
"acha Vineet sham ko jaldi aa jana.. Appointment hai doctor ke saath na Aarav ka" Ruhana said.
I sighed... They even had to compromise with their work because of me.
I heard a few familiar voices outside, Ruhana said "Samar.. Sneha Rishi.. Tum sab yahan"
Why are they here? Have they learned about my blindness? I panicked, I hope they don't enter my room.
I suddenly felt a jerk in my body, someone had hugged me tightly "Aarav.. Thank god tum thik ho.. Kitna pareshan they hum tumhare liye"
I was silent, it was Samar. I smiled at him and asked "tum yahan..."
"Tera accident hua toh mil nahi sakte kya?" He questioned me.
I tried to locate where his voice was coming from, I looked towards my left. Samar said "Aarav.. Tum waha kya dekh rahe ho?? Main toh tumhare saamne hun na..."
I blinked my eyes for a few seconds, I heard my mother's voice "Samar.. Abhi uska accident hua hai na doctor ne mana kiya zyada baat karne se.. "
"Thik hai Aunty.. Hum chalte hai jaldi se thik ho jaa phir bahut masti karni hai college mein aakhiri saal jo hai hamara aur tum toh expert ho shararat karne mein" Samar spoke, I was feeling so disheartened.
They left from there when Ruhana asked them to leave.
I closed my eyes, Ruhana said "Aarav.."
I took a deep breath "maa... aap please meri books mere saamne rakhengi.."
I heard the movement around the room, I heard something being kept on the bed. She kept her hand on my shoulder and asked "Aarav tum..."
"Main thik hun maa.. Aap please jayie" I assured her.
"Nahi tum..thik nahi ho.. Aarav" she spoke, I was frustrated and ended up shouting "maa please jayie..."
I heard the door closing...
Third Person POV
Ruhana had moved out, instead of closing his room door she had closed her bedroom door so that she could keep an eye on his actions.
She called Vineet "Vineet.. Ghar aa jao please"
"Kya hua??" he questioned.
"Ghar aao batati hun.." She replied.
Within half an hour Vineet arrived. As soon as he returned, Ruhana rushed to him and said "sab gadbad ho gayi... Samar aur uske dost ghar aa gaye.."
He was shocked hearing her, they might have spoken something which had mentally weakened him.
She held his arm and took him to Aarav's room. She showed him his acts with teary eyes.
Aarav had opened about four to five books in front of him. He held one and tried to read what was written.
He was mumurming "kaunsi kitaab hai ye..."
He threw it away in frustration when he couldn't identify the subject. He picked another and started flipping the pages. Tears were brimming down his eyes "ye...economics hai"
RuVi entered the room, Ruhana sat down in front of him while Vineet was standing beside him.
"Aarav.." She took his name softly.
Her voice didn't reach him as he hadn't reacted. She said a bit loud "Aarav.. Suno"
He looked up at her, he was sweating badly. He had been putting lots of pressure on his brain trying to understand the books. He asked "maa ye.. Economics ki book hai na?"
Ruhana glanced at it, it was a "Mass communication" book. She doesn't know how to answer him?
"Aarav ye.." she didn't give any false hope and said, "economics ki book nahi hai.."
He threw it away and showed another.. "Ye waali??" he carefully looked at her hoping for a positive response.
He forwarded the book and tried to touch her hand, after lots of efforts he grabbed her arm and asked "padho.. Kya likha hai?? Please.. Mujhe apni padhai puri karni hai.. Bolo kya likha hai"
Tears slipped down her eyes seeing his state, he was not in senses. "Aarav.. Shant ho jao" Vineet spoke.
"Maa.. Samar mujhse baat nahi karega.. Mere dost mujhse door ho jayenge.. Mujhe apni aankhein wapas chahiye" he shouted.
She composed herself and replied in a calmed tone "Aarav.. Shant ho jaa.. Please.."
He denied and shouted "meri aankhein mujhe wapas chahiye.. Dad sab laake dete hai na mujhe unse kaho wo bhi laake de.." he closed his eyes, he fulfilled his demand unfortunately his vision couldn't give him back.
"Bolo na maa.. Unhe meri aankhein wapas laake de.." He shouted, with pain reflecting in his voice.
"Aarav statue.." Ruhana said in a shaky voice but it wasn't affecting him.
"Unhe pareshan nahi karunga.. Ladunga bhi nahi.. Kabhi unka credit card nahi lunga bas mujhe meri aankhein lautade... mujhe dekhna hai aapko.. Unhe" he rebuked.
He was getting out of control, he started rubbing his eyes. He closed it and opened it again but there was just complete darkness around him.
He stood up from the bed and walked a bit, the table came in his way. He threw away the things from there and shouted "merii aankhein mujhe wapas chahiye"
He began to hit on his eyes hard, which only hurt him. Ruhana was worried.
Vineet held his hand and said "Aarav.. Bas karo tumhare baar baar aise karne tumhari aankhein wapas nahi aayengi.."
He was blabbering, Vineet jerked him a few times and shouted at the top of his voice "Aarav... hosh mein aao.. Hosh mein aao.."
He looked at him silently, Vineet said with teary eyes "Nahi laa sakta main tumhari aankhein wapas.. Nahi dekh sakte ho tum ab... nahi dekh sakte ho"

The words brought him back to his senses, he ended up crying. Vineet pulled him into his embrace and he wrapped his arms around him tightly all Vineet could hear was his crying..
"I am sorry son... Tumhare aankhein main tumhe nahi lauta sakta..." he just said helplessly.
"Please Dad... You can do anything.... acha nahi lagta ye andhera kuch samajh nahi paata hun main" he almost pleaded with his father.
Ruhana smeared his head, she tried hard not to let her tears drop down but she couldn't resist. She cleaned her eyes and said.. "Samajh jaoge.. Hum madad karenge na tumhari"
"nahi Dad... Koi kuch nahi kar sakta... Meri zindagi se andhera door kabhi nhi" he just cried more.
"Aarav.. Bache please i know bahut hi zyda muskil hai tumhare liye par tum koshish toh karo zindagi ko behtar banane ki" She said..
She didn't hear his reply, even his cry had stopped. It seemed he had fallen unconscious due to mental stress.
