Chapter Eight

The first thing I realized was pain. A lot of pain, especially on the back of my head. I tried to sit up but I felt paralyzed, when I tried to lift my hand it was the same. I started to panic but I couldn't scream so I just relaxed. That's when I realize that I couldn't heart anything either. All my senses were paralyzed it seemed.

After what felt like hours I was able to twitch my fingers. It wasn't much but it kept me from going insane. Slowly I was able to move my whole hand. I still couldn't hear or see but I knew that whatever was going on with my body was ending. The next thing that came back to me was sound. I heard an obnoxious beeping sound as I continued to move my hand around.

Suddenly there was a cry, possibly of joy. It was a woman's voice that I didn't recognize. Footsteps came pounding into the room. It sounded like a lot of people, a touched my hand and I lifted my hand to let the person know I knew they were there. I continued my process of trying to regain feeling in my arms. I gave up trying to move my legs as it seem useless. Once I was able to do that I attempted to sit up but my torso and head weighed a thousand pounds it seemed. I still wasn't able to see which scared me and I couldn't tell if my eyes were open or not. So carefully I lifted my hands to my face and touched my eyes. When I felt that they were open I found my mouth and let out a sob. Voices were talking to me and asking me questions but I couldn't focus on them because I realized that I was blind.

Then the events came back to me. I had hit my head and back on some rocks at the beach. Trying to think back to the medical classes I had to take a couple years ago I realized that where I hit my back was an important part of me being able to walk. Another sob escaped my throat. I finally decided to focus on the voices.

"Ace, dear can you here me?" It was a mans voice. He sounded like he was in his mid-forties.

"Yes." My voice was rough but he understood me.

"Ace, can you tell me how you feel?" He inquired

I nodded, "I can't see." I sobbed before continuing. "I can't feel my legs and my head hurts." There was a sob from someone else in the room and then a voice asking to be led to the cafeteria. I wondered who that was but I didn't get a chance to ask.

"Ace, would you like to know about you injuries?" The man asked. I nodded. "To start with, I know you said you can't see. Allow me to ease your mind, it is only temporary from what the x-ray had implied. There is really no telling how long it will last. As for your legs, I am sorry to say that you are paralyzed from the waist down." He waited for me to react but I was too shocked.

"How long will I have to stay here? And how will I get around?" I asked.

The man adjusted something on my hand. I assumed it was a needle. "You will stay here for about a week more. We need to do some tests now that you are awake. Just an MRI for your head and a more detailed x-ray for you spine and legs." I nodded.

Something occurred to me. "Have I been in a coma?"

The man sighed. "Yes. For three weeks and six days."

It took a minute for that to process. A month? A month I have been in a coma.

"Well Ace, you will have a nurse who you can call at anytime just use this remote." He picked up the hand that didn't have a needle in it and lifted it up to show me where the remote was hanging over my bed. "You have some visitors."

"Thank you." I heard him walk out and. Then hurried footsteps over to me.

"Oh Lord, Ace!" I knew that voice.

"Daddy!" I tried not to sob when he leaned over and hugged me.

"Oh my baby! I am so sorry! Oh darling!" He cried and it broke my heart.

We sat for a while, him holding me and the both of us crying. "You're going to be ok, alright? You'll be fine. Let me go find your mother, Colin and Dean are here."

"Ok." I said and I heard him get up and leave. After a minute or two, two other sets of footsteps came rushing into the room. A hand touched my left hand and I squeezed the fingers resting there. Another hand touched my right hand and I gave it a squeeze too not really knowing who was who.

"How are you, Ace?" Colin said from my right.

"I can't see so that's disorienting, my legs are paralyzed forever and my head hurts, so.." I shrugged.

"This is my fault, Ace." Colin groaned.

I turned my head to where I assumed he was. "Stop Colin! This is no ones fault. Not even mine."

I turned my head towards where I guessed Dean was and grinned. "You back now that I'm injured?"

"Ace!" They both exclaimed at the exact same time.

"What?" I said shocked.

"Don't joke like that." Dean said.

I frowned and turned my head toward the ceiling. I pulled my hands from theirs and covered my face. After a while we talked. Well they asked if I was okay repeatedly and I just tried to console them with the truth. I was never going to be able to walk again.

"Dean? Can I talk to Colin alone for a minute." I asked a whole later.

"Sure." I heard Dean walk away and out the door before turning to Colin's general area. "Your protector job just got a lot harder."

"I know."

"You do?"

He nodded.

"Does Matthew know?"

Colin nodded again. "He's worried about what this could mean. He has also assigned that I be as close to you as possible all day every day."

"What was that?" I started. "When I was able to push you? And why was I so unreasonably angry?"

"Matthew thinks it is one of your powers that are peaking through. Considering you'll be seventeen in a few months your other powers will be becoming more pronounced." Colin told me.

I frowned, "what does that entail?"

"I am moving into the guest room in your house. I am now your live in assistant. Your parents agreed because I am trained in physical therapy and assistance."

"Are you trained in everything?"

Colin just laughed. "Mm, kind of, yes."

A week after I woke up they began preparing me to leave the hospital. I had some cat scans and MRIs done but they said I didn't have any trauma in my head. I fully remembered everything that happened so that didn't concern the doctors too much. They also did some x-rays on my spine, hips, and legs. Apparently the chance of me walking is a 15% chance out of a hundred. That fact devastated me but I could be dead. The doctor also did some tests where they touched different things to my legs. He said they were testing the nerve damage. I could feel nothing that they did. My doctor told me that this meant I was a complete. That means I cannot feel anything below my injury point. The rock that hit my back jarred my spinal cord though it was still attached. The medical term is Complete Paraplegia.

I heard someone come in the room and then felt a hand on my arm. "Ace? My name is Amy and I am going to help you get ready to leave."

Amy helped me get dressed and ready to leave. The door opened again and I heard a wheelchair rolling. I was rolled out the door and into what presumed was a hallway. I heard my dad's voice in the hallway and then I heard a woman gasp.

"Ace, honey, are you ready to go home?" My mother asked me. It sounded like she had been crying. She only came to see me twice all this week.

"Yes. Where's Dean?" I asked.

"Right here, Ace." I smiled in the direction I heard his voice coming from.

It felt like it took forever to get out of hospital but then the doors opened and the cold winter air embraced me. I sighed in contentment and then I realized that I wouldn't be able to get in the car.

"How am I supposed to get in the car?"

Mom answered. "We bought a van and had it modified so we can wheel you up through the back and then latch your wheel chair to the floor. It's safe, promise."

I smiled and nodded in her direction while wondering who this woman really was and what she did with Meredith. My chair was pushed up a ramp and it was actually kind of fun. Some popped the latches on my wheel chair and I felt the car start up.

"Who is in here?" I asked.

"Dean, Colin, you mother and myself, dear." Dad answered.

It was comforting to know that Dean and Colin were with me and that they were seemingly getting along. We drove a while and Dad stopped at the store and mom ran in to get my favorite candy, food and to rent my favorite movies. The movies were my request since I had already seen them so many times I didn't need to see them to know what was going on.

Mom finally came out of the store and we went home. I was wheeled out of the car and into the house. I was hungry so I was taken to the kitchen and someone fixed me mac and cheese. After a while of eating and thinking I wondered if a ramp or something was built to get me upstairs to me room.

"Actually dear, we have moved all of your things to the room on the first floor. It is set up exactly like your room upstairs." Dad had told me when I asked. He said that when I got my sight I would be able to relax more.

Over the week Colin and I worked on my seeing. He said there really wasn't much we could do until it came back on its own.

I had gotten quite used to not being able to see and while I knew it was temporary I missed being able to see.

"Colin?" I said one night while we were just hanging out in my room watching a movie.

"Yea?"

I pressed my lips together trying to form my question. "How did you get into the program of becoming a protector?" I decided to start with that question first.

"Well," he sighed. "I think that my father was part of the program. Another thing that probably got me in is that they look for children with right potential. I don't know what that is but apparently I have it. Why?"

I shrugged. "Do you regret it? Being a protector? Being my protector?"

"Ace! How can you ask that? I wouldn't give up this job even if my life depended on it. And as for being your protector, I wouldn't trade you for any of the others. Ever."

He said it with such sincerity that I blushed and wished I could see his face. Although we had grown close since the accident, but I could never get it out of my head that he was hiding some things from me. I learned that Colin's parents died in a terrible accident involving some supernaturals eleven years ago. It made me wonder why he continued to interact with supernatural people and he just shrugged saying he didn't feel the need to pin his parents death on them. I could tell that I was falling for him. It made me think about what he told Matthew. Did he harbor feelings for me at all? Did he used to? Before the accident? My guess was that he felt guilty about what happened to me but he wasn't to blame.

After the movie ended Colin said that it was nearly mid-night and that we should get to bed. I agreed and I wheeled myself towards my bed and felt around until I felt it. Once there I tried to pull myself up onto it but I heard Colin chuckle softy.

"What?" I demanded in his direction.

"You can't do that on your own, you know. Let me help you."

Being the stubborn person I am, and the fact that I already didn't like the idea of him being my 'protector' I growled at him.

"I don't need your help."

"You needed my help every other time you attempted to get onto your bed yourself."

"I don't care. I can do it this time." I again felt for my bed and attempted to get onto my bed but the wheel chair kept sliding. "Ugh!" I growled. I had absolutely no upper body strength.

I could hear Colin drumming his fingers on my desk and I gave up. "Dammit Colin just come help me!"

I waited and then I felt a strong arm under my arms and felt myself being lifted. Colin gently sat me on my bed and helped me fix my blankets.

"Thank you," I huffed not really liking him at the moment.

Colin chuckled and I felt him kiss my hair which made me blush. "Goodnight Ace."

"G'night Colin." And I heard him leave the room.
