Chapter 22
Cara stabbed at her cereal, the fruit on the side going untouched. She could tell the table was quieter than usual. Since the incident with Alex, Cara was having a hard time acting normal. After each interactions with the changed boy, it seemed that her mood turned more and more sour.
The worst part was, it was completely obvious.
When Astrid thought Cara couldn't see, she sent a prompting look to the two boys at the table. Lex was quick to look down at his food, poking at his eggs to avoid taking responsibility. After what he had caused in the greenhouse, the last thing he figured Cara needed was him trying to talk to her.
Astrid gave him an exasperated eye roll, her eyes landing on Sterling next. He raised his hands in defense, shaking his head. Astrid have him a pointed look. He sighed loudly.
The entire exchange went unnoticed by Cara as she stared into her milk and contemplating about her position with Alex.
Sterling sent one last pleading look towards Astrid, who narrowed her eyes at him and raised an eyebrow at him. The boy sent his stare back to Cara who hadn't once looked up from her bowl of food. Slowly he reached out, snatching a fruit from the plate next to the bowl. Cara let him, not bothering to stop the thief.
Astrid gave an exasperated huff at Sterling who just shrugged his shoulders, chewing on his snatch. Astrid was quick to face the downtrodden girl, folding her hands in front of her and plastering a pleasant smile on her face.
"Cara?" she called out sweetly, keeping her voice light. Cara looked up from her cereal, her eyes darting around Astrid's features as she tried to figure out what she wanted.
"What?" Cara asked, the word coming out sharper than she meant. Astrid slid her arms down so the fist she made laid on the table top.
"Are you okay?" Astrid questioned, keeping her voice pleasant as she kept the matching smile on. Cara brought her gaze back down to her bowl, stabbing at the softening oats.
"I'm fine," Cara answered, grumbling the words out as she took a spoonful and shoved the cereal into her mouth.
"Being a cereal killer doesn't show you are fine," Astrid piped out, causing Cara to glare up at her.
"I didn't realize eating food made me not fine," Cara hissed out, taking an angry scoop out of her cereal. Sterling's eyes darted between the two females before he reached over and stole another piece of fruit from Cara's plate.
The motion went unnoticed by the two girls.
"Well, I think with the amount of force you're using shows you're not fine," Astrid pressed. Cara dropped the spoon in the milk, causing droplets to splash over as she planted her hands on the table.
Right before she went to go stand up, Lex placed a hand on her knee without thinking. She paused, shying out of his grip and looking over at the quiet boy. He shook his head subtly before bringing his eyes across the table. Cara followed him, sighing loudly. Though things were strained between the two, she couldn't help but follow what he was asking of her.
"I'm sorry for snapping at you, Astrid. I just haven't been feeling well," Cara partially revealed, putting a fake apologetic smile on.
Astrid sat back, her face showing bewilderment at Cara's admitting to not being well. Cara took a deep breath, letting it out slowly as she began to slurp down the rest of her softening cereal and milk.
"Uh, yeah," she answered back dumbly, looking at Sterling out of confusion. "If you don't mind me asking, why haven't you been feeling well?" Astrid continued to prod, causing Cara to twitch with irritation.
"Period," Cara lied in a clipped tone, quickly finishing the contents in her bowl. "I should go see where I can help out in the community today, I'll see you guys later." With that, Cara was quick to dismiss herself as she grabbed the empty bowl. Sterling snuck the rest of the fruit off the plate before she grabbed that and hurried towards the area where they discard their plates.
Astrid's eyes trailed along with the retreating girl before she turned around and sighed dramatically. She noticed Lex and Sterling were staring at her. Lex was silent as Sterling looked on while chewing whatever was in his mouth noisily.
"What?" Astrid asked defensively to the boys. "I didn't say anything wrong, did I?"
"Cara is... a bit sensitive at the moment," Lex alluded after finding out her secret about Alex not long ago.
"Sensitive about what? That she's on her period? She just blurted out that she was on it, I highly doubt she's sensitive about it," Astrid argued, her eyes leaving the group at the table as the door opened, and Cara exited the building. A cold draft snaked towards the back of the room. Chills rose from Astrid's legs as she brought her attention back to Lex.
"She's going through some matters she'd rather keep private," he tried defending, but only managed to light the fire under Astrid.
"Private? Private!? We are her friends, and she wants to keep something from us? What could possibly be so important that she's keeping it from us?" Astrid growled out, her eyes narrowing in anger at the thought.
"Important enough to keep it to herself," Lex answered vaguely, looking down to play with the silverware that laid on his plate.
"Are you saying you know what's going on with her? I'm her friend, I just want to be there to help her through what she's going through!" Astrid pried, pointing an accusatory finger at Lex. He shook his head slowly, playing off as the innocent.
"I know nothing of what's going on. It's just a feeling I'm getting, okay? You know those gut feelings where something doesn't feel right?" Astrid stayed immobile as she thought over his words before nodding hesitantly. "That's all I got. I just feel that is Cara was feeling completely comfortable about whatever is going on with her, she'd tell us. We just need to be there for her without pressing too much, okay?"
"Yeah, okay," Astrid relinquished, collecting her things as she stood up. "I'll make sure I'll be there for her, even if she doesn't want me to be." She smiled, gaining a wary look from Lex and Sterling.
"Astrid," Sterling called warningly. "I agree with Lex on this. We should just leave her be."
"I will, I will!" Astrid called off her shoulder as she left the table "I will make sure I find out what's going on with her," she murmured under her breath as she smiled towards the workers taking care of the plates.
