Chapter 25

Alex's POV

"SUN!" The name flew from his mouth before he even realized it was. He dove down towards the fallen girl. He grabbed her hand, his eyes glazing over with fear. The memory hit him, and all he could do was freeze as it played in his mind.

Pain blossomed in his chest, the mysterious force throwing him off balance. He collapsed backwards, his head bouncing harshly off the ground with a loud smack. Pain once again swelled, this time in the back of his head. His ears rang, the sounds of distant screaming and gunshots sounded before hands frantically touched around his torso.

"Alex! Alex!" Sun called out to him, grabbing his cheeks. Her fingers were cold, shaking with fear and more than likely the frigidness of the air.

"Sun... Run..." he managed out weakly.  He pried his eyes open a sliver, taking in her as she shook her head. Sun's hands skimmed down to his chest  trying to pressurize his wound. His entire body quaked wth the tremors from her weight. He watched her bring a hand up in disbelief, watching the way her eyes turned shiny with tears at the shear amount of blood on them.

"No, no! We are going to get you out of here. We'll get to Ryseden, and you'll be okay!" Another shot went off. She hissed, lifting her gun again, and firing rapidly into the cover of the woods. They shot her. You dumbass, get out of trouble, I'm already long gone. Alex managed to lift his arms. They were heavy like lead. He weakly shoved Sun on her thigh, and she looked down to see Alex staring at her.

"Go, Sun. I'll be okay." His eyes dimmed a bit before sliding close. His chest spasmed a bit before stilling. Come on. Breathe. Suck in a breath. Let her know you're okay.

"How dare you break your promise," she whispered at him brokenly. I'm sorry, Sun. I know. I promised you so much more.

Footsteps faded away, and a twitch of a smile made it to his lips. You better make it away okay. Voices faded in and out of his hearing. A shuddering breath, peeking his eyes open to see silhouettes above him. Then his eyes slid shut, and everything went black.

"Hey!" someone yelled, shaking the haze from his mind. His eyes raised to a blonde woman pointing a gun at his head.  Worry was the last thing on his mind as he stared blankly at the woman. Then it clicked she was the one that shot Sun, and anger sparked up as he narrowed his eyes.

"Astrid, he's okay," Sun murmured out, writhing painfully on the ground.

"Cara, he almost shot you!" she screamed in disagreement, the gun still aimed at him. Cara? He laughed coldly at the woman.

"I was no where near shooting her," he growled. Alex turned back to the woman below him, his feature softening as the pain rippled across her features.  Oh, Sun. He brought his hand up to her cheek, cupping it with a feathery touch as he turned her towards himself. "I'll get you back to Ryseden, so you can get fixed up. I'm sorry for snapping at you," he murmured. His hand slid from her face to behind her neck as the other went to her knees.

"You can't take her back, you dumbass," Astrid scolded. He glared up at the Rysedonian still pointing her weapon at him. You're the threat here. "You're from Solaris. You'll be shot down on sight. Cara is the only one keep me from shooting you now."

"What are you even doing here?" Sun bit out as she grabbed for her belt and started undoing it. Alex brought his gaze back down to her as a blush blazed to his cheeks. It's just to stop the bleeding.

"I've been wondering about you. Ever since the storehouse incident yesterd-"

"And you're still sticking your nose into other people's businesses," Sun interrupted. Alex switched his gaze between the two girls. What happened between them? There's so much tension.

"If I hadn't been here, you would have been shot!" Astrid argued. Sun started to sit up, and Alex was quick to wrap his arm around her waist to help her up. Promise... I made her some sort of promise?

"If you hadn't been here, I wouldn't be shot," Sun snapped back, tying her belt tightly above the wound to cut off the circulation. That's right, bitch. Don't try to pin anything on me when you're the one jumping to conclusions.

"I was just trying to help..." Astrid muttered, regret lacing her voice. He brought his arms under hers, hefting her up so she could stand. She leaned heavily on her uninjured leg, and Alex couldn't help but think that he wanted her to lean and rely on him.

"Astrid's right though. Alex, you can't help me back. I'll be fine, just head back to Solaris," Sun said to Alex, and he felt the hurt hit him. How can you think I'd leave you when you're in a condition like this? She sent him a hard look, and after a bit of hesitation and thought, he relented.

"Fine, fine. You better stay safe," he answered her back, sending the woman who shot her a pointed, watchful look. He reluctantly backed away and headed back to Solaris. Worry filled him up. What if she doesn't make it back okay? What if that psycho girl decides to shoot her again? The 'What Ifs' gnawed at him, and he turned around to follow of them despite Sun's request, only to find them gone already. Gone, like she was only a memory. He chuckled at his thoughts, shaking his head. A memory all right.

He picked his way over the terrain back to Solaris, his mind staying on Sun the entire way.

"Hey, Alex, you look a little down there! Get rejected by a girl?" Alex was brought back to reality, finding himself in front of the gates already. He looked up to see the guard smiling down with a teasing grin.

"Shut the hell up, Steve," he snapped back defensively. "Just open the damn gate." Laughter ricocheted into the night as he climbed down from his post.

"Definitely got rejected." Alex glowered at the man when he slid the gate open. He passed by, making his way to his trailer. She wasn't lying. She was really there when I lost my memory. She did try to help.
