Chapter Two

Nightkit twisted and turned, sleeping pitifully.

It was so hard to fall asleep when there was so much noise outside! Mudsight had told Darkkit and Nightkit that they'd have to go to sleep early, because she wanted them to wake up and go out earlier the next day since within the last moon, Lightstream had moved into the nursery, expecting kits within the next two moons, a moon before Nightkit and Darkkit became apprentices.

"I can't wait." Nightkit murmured to himself. Every cat else in the nursery was sleeping, so he was free to go over his thoughts aloud. "New kits to play with! I bet Darkkit is excited, too."

He remembered the thing that the elders seemed to tell him all the time; 'You're a cat of self-reflection, Nightkit. That's quite the good thing, for a cat as ambitious as you are.'

Nightkit didn't understand what it meant, but he knew that he wanted to be a warrior one day; the best in the Clan! In all the Clans!

Nightkit glanced over at Darkkit, who was curled in a tight ball and snoring softly. Nightkit wondered if Darkkit was having dreams of StarClan already? If he was, Nightkit didn't want to wake him up. This could be important!

Nightkit got to his paws and stretched, then sneakily made his way to the nursery entrance. Trying not to disturb the brambles, he pushed his way through the bramble screen.

The cats of DuskClan were beginning to settle down for the night as dusk passed and the sun disappeared from sight. Nightkit glanced around, trying to find his father-there!

"Cedartail!" Nightkit called. Cedartail often didn't have much time to spend with his kits, but whenever he could he made up the best games for them to play.

Cedartail glanced over at Nightkit as he scurried over. Cedartail let out a purr and meowed, "Aren't you supposed to be asleep?"

"I am," Nightkit confessed, "But I couldn't sleep! And you have the best games, so I thought you could play one with me, and then I'll get really tired and fall asleep!"

"What a brilliant idea, my little warrior." Cedartail murmured. "How about we play something I got from a friend of mines. He used to live with twolegs, and said that it's called 'soccer'. We need a round object-like that rock. If You can get the rock past me and into the warrior's den, you get a point. If I get it past you, I get point. First to ten points wins!"

"Yes!" Nightkit purred. "That sounds like a great game!" He rolled the pebble over to him.

"Ready, set, go!" Cedartail meowed, laying in front of the warrior's den.

Nightkit kicked the pebble at Cedartail, who quickly flicked it over to Nightkit with his paw. Surprised by the speed of the pebble, Nightkit pounced on it and kicked it hard at Cedartail. Cedartail let out a playful hiss and reached over to block the pebble, then batted it back over at Nightkit, who flicked it over at Cedartail. Cedartail reached for it, but was too slow and the pebble slid into the warrior's den.

"Woohoo!" Nightkit yowled, jumping up and celebrating. "Me; 1! Cedartail; 0!"

He yelped as the pebble zoomed past him.

"Nightkit; 1, Cedartail; 1." Cedartail meowed, placing his head on his paws with a smug expression.

Soon, the two were done with the game, and Nightkit had won!

"Great job, Nightkit." Cedartail chuckled. "How do you feel?"

"Sleepy." Nightkit confessed. "I'm going to go to sleep now, Cedartail. Thanks for everything!"

"No problem, Nightkit." Cedartail chuckled. "No problem at all."
