Chapter Ten:
I climb into the rental car my mother's driving without looking at her. She doesn't say anything to me as she speeds off. When we arrive she doesn't say anything either. Just gets out of the day and storms into the lawyers office.
"Mrs. Bellerose. Good to see you again." Jason shakes mom's hand, looking down her shirt quite often.
Mom smiles at him as if her husband want buried two days ago. "Yes. You as well." They don't acknowledge me.
"To my office?" Jason suggests. He leads us to his office once again. And like the last time, we take the chairs across from him.
Mom doesn't wait for Jason to start. "I want to sell my husband's business."
I clench my hands. "I want to take over the business."
My mother casts me a disgusted look. "I don't care what you think you want, Fallon. So shut up and let me handle this." She turns back to dad's lawyer.
I take a few deep breaths as they talk. Once I'm calmed down I think everything through. I turned eighteen yesterday. I am now a legal adult. I can run dad's company now.
"Mrs. Bellerose, selling the business could be a bit risky and will take time." Jason says, typing away on his computer.
Mom leans back in her chair. "I don't care," she waves her hand. "As long as I don't have to deal with it."
Court... I can take her to court. Dad had legal documents saying that I would take over the business one day. "Mom. I want to take this to court."
Jason and mom freeze. "What?" My mother laughs, shocked.
"Dad had legal documents saying you can't sell the company without his or my signature first. I want to take this to court." I say firmly.
Mom splutters and looks at Jason. "I'm afraid she's right, Mrs. Bellerose. Now that she is eighteen, she must sign the contract of the company over. But if she refuses, she can take this to court, if she so wishes."
I'm shocked, but don't show it. I didn't even know that was an option. "I want to take it to court then." I stand up, preparing to leave. "I'm not letting you sell my father's business." I add, glaring at my mother.
As I leave the room I hear my mother screaming at the Jason. I'd say 'poor man' but...he's just as despicable as my mother.
