Chapter 12
-I wrote this chapter~A~
Dylan's POV
Dylan was staring at Leo and Aveline. Not that he was jealous, it seemed to him Aveline hated him, but out of caution.
Aveline had been so quick to trust a stranger that called himself a wizard. It had taken a long time for her to trust Dylan, if not at all.
Dylan still had a headache from the other night. He had drank a lot of water and had probably overdosed on painkillers. Aveline hadn't helped him at all. She just observed from a distance.
To be truthful, Dylan hadn't been complaining that much, compared to the pain he'd been in. That morning it was almost impossible for him to stand up, let alone walk around the whole city.
His body deserved a well earned rest. Dylan closed his eyes but even in his tired state, it took him over an hour to fall asleep.
That morning, he was the first to wake up. It was still fairly early but he felt well rested.
Dylan got out of bed and brushed his teeth. When he exited the bathroom, his eyes fell on Leo's bag. Wondering if it was worth the risk, Dylan knelt down beside it.
Leo shifted and Dylan jumped up warily. A few seconds later, he heard feet this on the floor and Leo walked out from beside the bed. But before he walked into the bathroom, he stopped right in front of Dylan.
"You better not mess with Aveline, Dylan. I can see it on your face and I know you don't like me, or me with her, but if I see you doing anything with her, telling her about this, I will hunt you down and hurt you in the worst way possible" Leo spat.
Leo stared at Dylan once he was done speaking for a few seconds, then kept walking over to the bathroom without another word.
After a few minutes of Dylan standing there in shock, Aveline woke up. She stopped in front of Dylan like Leo had.
"Dylan, are you okay?" She asked, snapping her fingers in his face.
That took Dylan out of his trance. "Yea, I just..."
At that moment, Leo opened the bathroom door and stared Dylan down like a hawk, as if anticipating tearing him apart.
Avelines back was facing him so she couldn't see. "... Umm, yea, just fine."
Dylan hastily finished.
When Leo opened the door loudly, Aveline turned around and greeted him. Dylan watched in shock as they hugged each other. Aveline had known him for less than a day and they were already in extreme contact!
Dylan walked over and packed his bag, leaving them be. He jumped in surprise when Claire woke up.
"Why do we have to get up so early," she groaned, then got up and waited to use the bathroom after Aveline.
When all four of them were ready, they left the keys at the front desk and left without a word, as they were trying to stay undetected.
They headed to the forest. On the way in, Dylan started to recognize areas of the forest. Eventually they came to the clearing where the death eaters attacked Dylan and Aveline.
Dylan was hit by sudden dread. He had killed two people here. It didn't matter that he couldn't see their faces or that they were evil, he had still killed them.
Dylan remembered the look of fear in Avelines eyes when she had looked at him afterwords and the look of mistrust when she came back with the bags after Dylan had moved the dead and the two he had wiped the minds of.
He had used the spell "mobilicorpus" to move the unconscious bodies to a location far from where they were to avoid being found and apirated the two dead to a remote cemetery to be found and buried.
Dylan watched Aveline turn back to him to shoot Dylan an accusing look, as if trying to tell Dylan to stay put and not to tell the others what had happened there, so Dylan stayed quiet.
They walked in the forest for hours before setting up for camp. The sky was littered with stars. Eating what was left of the food from the grocery store, Dylan rested on the ground, staring up at the sky and quickly fell asleep.
Dylan woke up in the middle of the night, from what he could tell, sweating. He calmed down enough to see that Leo wasn't in his sleeping bag.
That got Dylan curious, but before he could get up and look around, Leo came back.
"Where did you go?" Dylan whispered.
Leo hesitated.
"To pee, what did you think," he responded after a second.
Dylan was starting to hate this guy. He always seemed to be lying and was completely and utterly untrustworthy. Why did Aveline seem like this guy? He's a complete asshole.
Without another word, they both went to sleep. Dylan couldn't fall asleep so instead he lauded there, staring at the stars and watching as the sky slowly went from black, to grey, to brown, pink and gold, then lastly to a light blue spotted with clouds.
Without eating breakfast, the group headed out. Leo kept talking about how there was a town nearby that had some people that could help them.
Aveline seemed really excited about that news and kissed Leo on the cheek.
Dylan internally gagged. When had their relationship become so intimate?
Dylan picked up the pace so he was ahead of the other three. He walked alone far ahead, barely close enough to hear their voices and footsteps.
Gradually, the air became colder and Dylan could see his breath infront of his mouth and nose. It was summer so this made Dylan very confused.
It kept getting colder so soon Dylan had to stop and place a hoodie over his shirt. That didn't stop the goosebumps. Leo, Aveline and Claire had gotten closer after he stopped and he could hear them complaining about the temperature.
"Why is it so cold!" Claire whined.
"It won't matter for long, the city should only be two and a half more hours of a walk if I calculate it correctly," Leo responded. He was stuttering so Dylan guessed his teeth were chattering.
Once again, Dylan walked faster. When the three had fallen behind again, the trees started to look more dead that the previous ones. The grass was dry and grey, and it forever got colder and colder.
Soon, the trees thinned out and there was a clearing. In the clearing, there was what seemed should have been a small village. It wouldn't have held more that one hundred people if it was in pristine condition, but it was completely deserted.
Dylan stopped, suddenly wary. He could see scorch marks on the bricks and signs that buildings were blown apart.
Instead of running in and exploring like he wanted to, Dylan waited for the others.
There was safety in numbers. But then, Dylan thought, there's also slaughter, carnage and massacre.
When the others arrived, they all took a while to take in the miserable sight. Leo was the first to speak up.
"This shouldn't be here. We shouldn't be here," he said, sounding scared.
Dylan was confused. "How would you know? None of us knew this was coming. Instead of leaving we should explore a little, scavenge the burnt houses." Dylan spoke, trying to intimidate Leo. It worked.
Leo looked scared for the first time since Dylan had met him. It was almost as if he knew what was waiting for them.
"That seems like a good idea!" Aveline said, trying to loosen the tension in the group. She started forwards.
Leo was on a state of panic and held Aveline back.
"We don't know what's in there," Leo told her, his voice cracking in fear.
"The only way to know is by exploring," Aveline told him. And kept going forwards, dragging Leo with her. Hesitantly, Leo followed her. His shoulders looked tense, as if he was ready for an unavoidable attack.
All around the village, there were signs of attack. There were holes on the sides of almost every house and there was the scent of death everywhere. It was only getting colder.
Something moved up ahead and Leo jumped. Why was he so scared?
"It's probably just a rat," Dylan guessed, but he wasn't sure. What if there were death eaters waiting to ambush them?
When they came up to what seemed to Dylan like the village church, a low moan echoed out from the wrecked walls.
Suddenly, over a dozen dementors flew out and started to feed off their souls. It felt dreadful. Cold emptiness surrounded Dylan and soaked into the very being of his core.
All around him, he could see the same thing happening to Aveline, Leo and Claire.
Dylan watched as Aveline pulled out her wand. "Expecto Patronum!" A hawk swooped out of the tip of her wand, but instantly it faded out into nothing. Aveline was too scared to concentrate on her patronus.
Summoning all his courage, Dylan calmed down and let the dementors suck up his soul. He needed to be completely relaxed.
At the same time, Leo was doing the same thing, but Avelines eyes were watching Leo, not Dylan.
In unison, both boys cast their spell, but only one was noticed by Aveline and that was Leo.
Out of Dylan's wand came a wispy fox that attacked the dementors tormenting him. Out of Leo's wand, came a lion that attacked his tormentors.
Dylan was too far away for Aveline to notice as his wand started to pulse. His fox evaporated but in its place came a huge surge of energy and a sonic wave pulsed out from Dylan's wand.
Not even Dylan was sure of what happened because he was so close to passing into the void.
When the pulse reached Leo's lion, the lion vanished and the dementors were tossed away. From where she was lying, Aveline thought Leo caused the pulse.
They all fell unconscious.
