Chapter One
I sat up staring outside. I look outside completely ignoring the world inside and just stare out into the park across the street. Kids playing, parents having a laugh, a couple having a picnic. The flowers were in full bloom, but slowly dying.
Someone snaps their fingers in front of my face and I snap back to reality.
"Isla, did you hear me?" Mr Hack looks at me.
"No, sorry..." I let out in a sigh.
"As I was saying," Mr Hack looked at me with a straight face on. "I am here to inform you that there will be another CEO appointed this week, besides yourself; we are making you Co-CEO's. Does this make sense?"
I nod at him, still shocked that he is appointing someone else as the CEO, as well as myself.
"The board and I agree that you need help with running the company" Mr Hack takes my hand and looks me dead straight in the eye, "We know it's been tough for you these past few weeks and we think that the new CEO will help you and take some pressure off your shoulders."
"But Jonathon, I am completely fine," I reply in a smile.
"Isla, you're not fine," He stands up from his chair and walks around his mahogany desk, leans up against it and crosses his arms. "Isla, you've lost your fiancé, a best friend and your mother all in one go. I didn't expect you to be back so soon. Let alone coming back a week after her funeral."
"Jonathon, I'm alright," I turn my head to the window and stare outside again. "You don't have to worry about me..."
Jonathon kneels down and holds onto my hands. "Oh but I do Isla!"
I turn my head to him and my bottom lip starts to wobble. Jonathon moves towards me and hugs me tight.
"Hey, shhh..." Jonathon's words sooth me but I couldn't help but just cry out.
Maybe I wasn't alright? Maybe I did need help?
~~**~~
A month ago, I was enjoying life, being completely in love and happy. I was set to walk down the aisle.
But things can change in an instant.
I entered my high rise apartment in the Melbourne CBD, chucked my keys into the bowl beside the front door. I walked into the kitchen and placed my bag down onto kitchen bench and then I heard a noise.
I turned my head and slowly walked down the hallway, stopping at my bedroom door. I heard moans, screaming and two familiar voices.
I pushed open my bedroom door to not only find my fiancé on the bed stark naked, but my best friend Olivia. My jaw hung down, my fists clenched and their faces turned from being in total sex mode to being in complete shock. Edward was banging his hips into her and she moans. He leaned down and kisses her passionately, stared into her eyes; he never once gave me that look that he is giving her now. Their heads turn when the door creeks.
All I can remember from that night is blurs, yelling, swearing and a slap on my cheek.
As the tears run down my now sore and redden cheek; I didn't look back and nor did I want to.
A few days later, my mother passed away from a car accident.
She was driving at night, coming back from basketball when a drunken teenager drove through a red light and hit my mum. Neither one of them survived. I cried for hours, my heart was broken and my head was a complete mess. I couldn’t believe what had happened. My mums a good driver, but clearly the other drunk driver was stupid. Collusion from the side, my mum’s car rolled over and she didn’t make it. Her life must have flashed before her eyes. Her life vanished within a matter of seconds and my heart broken within a matter of minutes of finding out about her.
In a matter of days, I had lost three people I loved. Three people who meant everything to me. Three people who were no longer in my life.
