Chapter 1

I wake up in my room in the orphanage. I share the room with my friend Kathrine, we've been best friends since my first day here.

I roll over and I don't see Katherine in the room. "Shit it must be time for breakfast."

I roll out the bed and stand up. Shuffling up the stairs and into the dining room I sit down and realize I'm the only one in my pajamas.

Everyone looks at me and smiles knowingly because the head mistress, Ms. Clancy, will probably send me back to my room without breakfast. That evil bitch.

I get up to go change but before I make it out the room I hear Ms. Clancy's heels clacking on the floor. The whole room goes silent and I flinch, already knowing the punishment coming my way.

I look into the hallway and try to see if Ms. Clancy is there, seeing no one I step into the hallway and as soon as I do Ms. Clancy turns the corner and looks straight at me. Shit, it's my time to die. Oh lord I'm going straight to hell.

"Ms. Sydney Kirey, what are you doing in your night clothes! Go down to your room and get dressed now! No breakfast for you." She pushes me towards the door that leads to my room and rushes me down the steps and slams the door behind me.

I walk into my room and change into some jeans and a sweatshirt. I brush my teeth and pull my curly hair into a bun. I walk up the stairs to open the door but it's locked. I try to turn it the other way but it won't budge, hitting it won't work either.

"Hey! Somebody! The door is locked can you open it! Hello?" I sit on the stairs and look around the room. The light above my head flickers and I hear a fly buzzing around in it. Ew. I get up and try the door one more time and push all my weight on it. It doesn't budge.

I guess I'm stuck down here. I walk back into my room and sit on my bed. What was the purpose of making me get dressed and not even letting me out my room. I lay down and grab my phone. Checking the time, it's almost 10am, which means I have to do my chores. Ugh. I have to wash the dishes, wipe the table, sweep the whole orphanage, all before classes and I have no one to help me. A click snaps me out of my thoughts.

I stand up and stretch, maybe
Ms. Clancy unlocked the door and decided to show me mercy. I walk out the room and turn the knob to the door and it opens. Yes. Freedom.

Walking into the dining room, I see no one else is here. Not even my plate is left just everyone else's dirty plates are left on the table. I collect the plates and put them in the sink and start washing them. When I finish washing the dishes I look at the clock in the kitchen and see I have an hour to clean before class starts.

Grabbing the broom besides the fridge, I begin sweeping the dining room. Sweeping the stairs, halls, rooms, and vacuuming carpets, I finish in 45 minutes. I put the broom and vacuum away, throw the trash out, and run to the school building.

I sit down next to Katherine just before the teacher starts class. When class is over I wait for Katherine to pack up and we walk to our next class. "Bathroom now." Katherine whispers.

"What's going on? What's wrong?" I ask her but get no reply. She just hands me an apple and walks out the bathroom. Oh she just wanted to give me some food. Since the teachers know when Ms. Clancy doesn't give you breakfast they don't let you eat until lunch. I take a bite and put the rest in my bag.

I go to the rest of my classes and go to the bathroom to take bites of my apple everyone once in a while.

When it's time for lunch, I find Katherine and we walk into the orphanage for lunch. I get served the minimum amount of food. Come on, all I did was come upstairs in my pajamas and these people are acting like I pissed in their food.

Katherine and I walk into our room and eat on our beds. "Thanks for earlier." I whispered. You never know who's listening in this place. "No problem. You're my girl." Katherine replied.

"Anything interesting happen today?" I ask. I️ recently found out that Katherine started to like this boy, Damon, and was planning to talk to him.

"Did you talk to a certain someone?" I added on so she could take the hint I'm trying to make.

"Maybe...", Katherine blushed. She never blushes. This sly girl, what did she do.

"Maybe? Did you talk to him? Did you sex him down? I need details honey, spill it." I squeal. My baby is growing up.

"Something happened." she replied not looking into my eyes. "So I went to talk to him but he was already talking to Nichole. So I kept walking and I went to my locker. I'm opening my locker and I reach in to get a book but it's too high and a hand comes out from nowhere and grabs it. Guess who that hand belonged to." Katherine said.

"No way! That's so cute. He totally loves you and your gonna have a million babies together." I squeal making Katherine laugh.

"Not only did he get my book for me, he walked me to class too and said 'see you later'. How awesome is that. I hope he likes me and we can be like those couples in those books your always reading." Katherine says excitedly.

"That's so amazing Kat. He loves you, I just know it. You're gonna end up together forever. I just wish that would happen to me." I replied. I wish I had romance, isn't this that age when people meet the bad boy and fall in love. I guess it's different when your in an orphanage.

When lunch is over we head back to school, finish our classes, and come back to the orphanage. It's dinner and I still get the smallest amount of food. I hope I get more food tomorrow. We all get ready for bed and Katherine and I go to our rooms. "Goodnight." the only reply I get is the soft sound of snores.

I lay in bed and think about how I ended up in a place where you get punished for eating in your pajamas and your being watched everyday.

My parents didn't die and my mom didn't leave me on the front steps. I was kidnapped and brought here when I was 6, but no one believes me.

Ten Years Ago

I was playing tag in the forest with my younger brother and sister when I heard a snap. I turn around thinking it's mommy but I see a man looking down at me. "Mommy!" I screamed.

My siblings and my mom come running to me with smiles on their faces but my mom's face pales and she stops when she sees the man. More men step out from the forest and my siblings hide behind my mom. My mom is frozen in place with her eyes wide open. "Mommy!" I screamed again.

"Come here." my mom said to me. I slowly started to walk towards my mom but one of the men grabs me and hold me back. "I'm scared mommy," I whimper. My mom tries to walk towards me but one of the men attacks her.

Scared, I started to scream for my dad. My dad came running over but then he saw the man on top of mommy. He tried to help mommy but the other men attacked him. My mom got up and took my brother and sister to the house. After they left my dad tried to fight as best as he could but the other men were still fighting him. I heard a gunshot ring through the forest and the man behind me picks me up and starts to run out the forest.

I look back to see my dad attempting to run after us but he's tackled by the men. I started to scream for him but my dad is getting harder to see as the man runs faster and faster. The man runs out the the forest and puts me down. I try to run away but he grabs my hand and pulls me to the ground. He bends down until we are eye to eye.

"You will behave." He says harshly, the only reply I can do is nod my head. He hails a taxi and we get inside the car.

The man tells the cab driver to drive us to the airport. When we arrive at the airport, the man picks me up and I slowly start to fall asleep. Soon we are getting off of the plane. The man carries me out the plane and I see a sign that says 'Welcome To Washington State! Enjoy Your Stay!' All I know is that I'm not in Florida anymore.

The man and I get in the taxi and the taxi driver drops us off at this house. The man and I walk side by side to the door and he knocks on it. An old woman opens the door and she takes one look at me and scowls.

The woman just grabs my arm and pulls me in the house. She drags me through the halls and past a bunch of rooms and we stop at a curtain. She pulls back the curtain to reveal a huge metal door.

The lady opens the door and shoves me in. As I tumble down the steps, the lady shouts "Katherine, show the girl her room!" Then she slams the door closed. I look up to see a girl in the dim light that looks about 9. She helps me up and she tells me to follow her. I guess that she's Kathrine.

She shows me to a gray dirty room. It's cold and there is a flickering light in the middle of the room. In the light, I can see Kathrine better. She has blonde hair and brown eyes. She's wearing a pink sweater and jeans.
"Welcome." she says. Before I can ask where I am she leaves the room. I slowly walk to the bed and curl up in a ball and fall asleep.

I miss home, even though I can't remember it much. That was my last memory of my family before I was taken here. My last day of freedom. I pull the covers over my head and roll on my side.
