Chapter 12

The agreement Eleazar and Jane had made the evening before, now prompted Eleazar to write to his mother regarding their stay at Netherfield. He dearly wanted to return to Longbourn, and Jane who, though dearly enjoyed her stay, agreed that they shouldn't impose on Mr Bingley longer than necessary. And they had stayed so much longer than Eleazar would have wanted to begin with.

They had agreed that a letter to Mrs Bennet would, hopefully, prompt her to send for the carriage and pick them up from Netherfield, bringing an end to their stay.

Mrs Bennet on the other hand had much different ideas on prolonged stays. She had hoped Jane would stay at least a week in Mr Bingley's house, and Eleazar being there was only better. No, she could not in good conscience accept her children back home already.

In the postscript his mother had added the encouragement that if Mr Bingley and his sisters asked them to stay longer she herself could miss them for a bit longer, and they did not need to worry.

Eleazar was positively resolved, under no circumstances would he try to stay longer at Netherfield, nor try to appease Mr Bingley in allowing them to stay longer. No, he would return home as soon as possible, far away from Mr Darcy and his unrelenting stares.

Jane was quickly urged by him to ask Mr Bingley for his carriage so they could return home without further delay. Unfortunately for Eleazar too many concerns were said regarding Jane's health and the wish for the siblings to stay a bit longer. They would depart the next morning instead of this afternoon, but leave they would.

The sour look on Miss Bingley's face told Eleazar that, though the woman was happy to be rid of him she would miss Jane's quiet company.

Mr Darcy too seemed more relieved than anything for them to be gone, Eleazar didn't spare the gentleman another thought after his quiet farewell and well wishes for a safe arrival. They had managed to keep the peace, a longer stay would have surely ended in an all-out argument, something Eleazar couldn't afford to have with one of the most prestigious men in the country.

On Sunday, after the morning service, the separation so many had been looking forward to finally happened. Tears were shed by Miss Bingley at the department of her dear friend Jane, and Eleazar even received a handshake from her. Mr Bingley helped Jane into the carriage, a role Eleazar had always assumed but now readily gave to her suitor, and they were ready to go.

Arriving at Longbourn wasn't the happy reunion Eleazar had hoped for, Mrs Bennet was greatly displeased they had come home earlier than she had told them to. Mr Bennet on the other hand was very happy to see them again, the house had been too silent with the both of them gone.

Mary was as usual deep in the study of thorough-bass and human nature; and had some new extracts to admire, and some new observations of threadbare morality to listen to. She had greatly missed Eleazar's company, the only one of her siblings who had, and took, the time to listen to her ramble about her findings.

Lydia and Catherine had very different kinds of information to share, they had spent their time with the officers in town and had learned many new things about them. One of the most important pieces, Colonel Foster was rumoured to be married soon.
