Chapter 5

My reminiscing was interrupted by a rousing call to dinner by 'Mother Dearest'. Sarcasm, of course. Ever been pulled out of a beautiful memory by your parents? Yeah. You can imagine how grumpy I was, or would have been if it wasn't for food., It happened to be one of my favorites. I practically flew downstairs.

"Your father made you your favorite dinner," my mom told me, smiling. "You have the best dad in the world."

I cleaned and ran into the kitchen, in the wonder of a special pasta dish, including linguini, tomatoes, eggplant, zucchini, peppers, onions, spinach, and chicken sausage. I hugged my dad.

"Thanks so much, Pops!" I said affectionately.

He beamed at me. "Anything for my beautiful daughter," he replied. We held hands and did 'the penguin walk' in a circle. He pulled away after a few seconds to dish out the pasta. He handed me a plate of the steaming spaghetti dish.

"Here you go. Parmesan cheese is out in the living room," he told me.

"Thanks again!" I practically skipped into the living room and sat cross-legged in front of the coffee table. Mum and Dad came out a second later with their own plates. Mum sat in the brown faux leather recliner and Dad sat on the small olive green couch. Dad flipped on the news channel. I half-buried my plate in cheese.

We flipped to Jeopardy! and Dad and most of the questions, a majority of his answers correct. There was a Mythology category tonight during the Single Jeopardy Round, and I got all but one. When it was over, we jumped back to Chris Matthew's closing remarks before Chris Hayes came on. I zoned out and went to go get a Canadian mint. I opened the cabinet and popped one in my mouth, savoring it's sweet, minty flavor.

I wandered back to the living room where Flo was advertising for Progressive insurance. I sat on the piano bench, moved the mute pedal down into a niche, and quietly played the opening of "Let it Go". I'm obsessed with Frozen for some reason, even though I have fire-based powers. Maybe it's because I can melt snow.. Muahahahaha!

I got up to the bridge and stopped, trying to make out the intricate series of notes. I gave up and replayed the intro a couple more times.

"Seconds, dear?" my dad called from the kitchen.

"Yes, please!" I replied happily.

"Bring your bowl out and I'll give you more."

I scrambled over to my dish and trotted out to the kitchen.

"How much?" Dad asked, tonging more spaghetti into my bowl.

"That's good," I said when it was about halfway full. I cheesed it up in the kitchen where the cheese had miraculously teleported to. Creepy...

I walked back to the living room as Chris Hayes started arguing with some other fellow about a political issue. I twirled my spaghetti on a spoon.

"Ok, thank you," Chris Hayes said with a laugh. "That was Senator (so-and-so) from Washington D.C.. Coming up next," he continued as music started to play, "A young teenager at West Park High risks her life to save her school from fire and comes out with nothing more than exhaustion. Stay tuned." He stacked his papers as the music drowned everything out, and the TV went to a commercial.

I looked at my mom with an unnerving, foreboding feeling churning my stomach into knots. I wanted to hide and forget about it, but I had already seen it. I had to see how this was going to play out.

The show came back on and I listened intently, heart pounding.

"Back here with breaking news," Chris Hayes was saying. "So I just got a report on an incident involving a 10th grade girl, who's name will be withheld,"—I breathed a sigh of relief—"who single-handedly saved her school from burning down with nothing but a couple of fire extinguishers. The whole orange-green second-floor corridor was on fire, and a friend of hers stated simply, quote, 'She just walked through the doors all confident-like and then she went through the hall doors and I thought she was going to die,' end quote. It says that she suffered from exhaustion, but no signs of burns out smoke inhalation." He paused for effect. "Joining us now is Dr. Francis Marconi of the St. Mary's Hospital to share with us further detail, Doctor, is it true she came in with no signs of burns, or... or smoke inhalation?" he asked with no pause in between the sentences.

Dr. Marconi cleared his throat. "Yes, that's true, Chris. Dr. Trilon informed me she was in the clear. All she needs is a good rest. It's astonishing! "

"Can you tell us more about the incident?"

"Well, they found this... sort of... ring of scorch marks on the carpet in the middle of where the fire was," Dr. Marconi said. My heart leapt into my throat. "She claims it came right up to have before the fire extinguishers got working, but it's a perfectly round circle, almost like an explosion."

"And Doctor, what are your thoughts on this... on how this is possible?"

"Well Chris, I think it's very strange that the girl was unscathed, that there was, um... ah, no signs of injury to her body or her lungs. I think that, well you know... at this point the investigation is still going on, so we'll just have to wait and see if more evidence comes out."

"Ok, thank you for your time Doctor, it was great to have you on the show," Chris Hayes concluded.

"It was my pleasure," Dr. Marconi said. His picture flashed off the screen.

"That was Dr. Lee from St. Mary's hospital," Chris said. "Coming up next, talking about the panic of the minor Ebola outbreak in the U.S., stay with us." The screen switch to the show's signature cover as music played.

"Do you have—" The commercial lady was cut off as my mom muted the TV. She shook her head in dismay.

"Oh Pyra, what have you done?"

Hey guys! Sorry for the delay on the major story updates. I have been so busy with the musical, and then the big lake effect snow in my area. If you live in the States, you probably already know the region I live in, but I honestly could care less. As long as you don't show up in my basement one day or something like that lol. :)  So yeah, I hope you enjoy the chapter.
