The full moon shone against the darkness of the sky. The stars glimmered with the moon, looking at the forest. All was quiet except the stirrings of a mouse or squirrel. Suddenly, a blue and gray cat exploded out of the ferns and killed the mouse. Then a second cat came rushing out. " That was my prey!" The cat snarled. " Well I caught it so its mine! The blue and gray cat retorted. " But I need it!" Can't you see we all need it? A dark brown tom said as he stepped out of the shadows. " Especially since its Leaf-fall. I don't know why we can't just live as a group. It will be easier to hunt prey if we work together." " But to do that, we need a leader." A deep meow surprised the three arguing cats. " What do you mean, Sky? Asked the brown tom narrowing his eyes. " I mean, since we all are living in peace and harmony, we have to elect a leader for the clan." Sky meowed.

"I am Blossom. I am the fasted cat here. I have many great skills for hunting and fighting. Choose Blossom to be the leader." The second cat, a pale brown she cat said proudly. " No, why live in the open where enemies can see us from skylengths away? We should live in the shadows where we can sneak up on intruders. Choose Dark to be your leader." " But I can't live among trees! I belong on the moor!" Protested Blossom. " Bah! We should live under MY rule!" The blue gray she cat replied. " My island is the best place to live! There are enough open space for you Blossom, and Sky, there are a lot of sunny spots, Dark there are also shadows for you! And guess what, there is plenty of fish for every season! Choose Petal to be your leader." Petal waited patiently as the cats thought about the decisions. At last, Blossom spoke. " That is a nice offer, Petal, but except for you, we don't eat fish." The other two cats nodded. " But you haven't even tried fish yet!" " Trust me, falling off a stepping stone was bad enough. having to eat the fish I smashed against rock was even more horrible!" Dark shuddered." Wait! Don't start arguing. I haven't gone yet." " Well go on, don't stop. We're wasting time talking while we should be hunting." Sky shot Dark a look before continuing. "My land has enough prey in leaf-fall to store up enough food for leaf-bare!" The other cats looked at Sky. It was true, he did look plumper than the others, maybe to fat. "You'll turn us all into a kittypet! Dark snarled. "I know what we can do, we will fight for the leadership! Whoever wins, gets to be the leader." Dark said and lunged at Blossom.

Dark and Blossom rolled on the forest floor spitting and clawing at one another. Sky was about to leap into battle when a squeal sounded behind him. "Look Storm, our father is about to fight!" Sky gasped. That was his kits Storm and Cloud! "I know Cloud! Look, here comes Dark! Lets fight hi..." Storms squeal was cut short as Dark took the kit and gave it a killing bite. "Storm, no!!!!!!!" Cloud howled as Storms limp body fell from Darks jaws. Dark ignored the howl and begun reaching for Cloud. Cloud tried to growl, but no sound came out. Just when Dark was about to grab her, blue fur flew and crashed into Dark. "Why? Why did you have to do that? I thought that battle was only meant for us!" Sky whispered, eyes full of grief. " Mouse-brain! I want to become leader! that's why I did that." He nodded toward the other two cats. They were sitting on the forest floor cradling the limp bodies of their kits, grief showing in their eyes. "I easily defeated them since they were too sad to even fight properly!" Dark said throwing Sky off of him and again tried to reach Cloud. " Then you left me with no choice." Sky said and killed Pebble, Dark's only kit.

The forest with no fighting cats, had became so quiet, you can hear a mouse nibbling on a cheese crumb. Suddenly, four mournful yowls erupted on all sides of the forest. They were the mates of the fighting cats, except only two was real. The other two had died of the past battles only a few moons ago. They have starlight in their fur their pelts transparent. They had come to pick up the dead kits and take them to the stars.

"Leaf! Is it really you?" Dark whispered to his dead mate. "Oh, Dark, why did you have to kill those other innocent cats? Pebble wouldn't have died if you didn't kill those other kits!" Leaf wailed. " Well, I didn't get to kill Sky's other kit." Dark nodded toward Cloud who trembled with fear. "Well, its too late for me to forgive you." Leaf's eyes hardened and she and Pebble disappeared into the mist. " Leaf! Pebble! I'm sorry!" Dark howled into the starry night sky. "Too late. Too late." They replied.

Sky looked up at his mate, Mist. " I'm so sorry Mist." Sky whispered. " No, dear it was never your fault. Dark was the one who killed Storm. He belongs to the stars now." Mist murmured eyes shining with love and grief for her mate and son.

Then there was a loud boom. A flash of white light blinded the cats. When Sky opened his eyes, he couldn't believe what he saw. Hundreds of starry cats surrounded him and the other cats. Sky, Blossom, Petal and Dark stood up and stared at the surrounding cats. Nine of the spirit cats stood up and beckoned to Sky. "From now on, you will be called Skystar. You will now scatter the petals of the blazing star. there are four petals. You are one of them. After you have collected all of them, bring them here so we could bless them as we did with you. We will bless you with nine lives as we will to other leaders. Find other cats like you Sky, and form a clan. Meet us at highstones after you found the petals of the blazing star. It is up to us to scatter them. You must appoint a deputy before moonhigh!" The flash came again, and the spirit cats are gone.
