An uneasy feeling became in Neka’s stomach as she searched for her twin brother, Peka.

Peka was always trying to get into trouble – or dead. This time it was just death he was after, it’s not that he wanted to die; it’s just that he didn’t think being safe was fun and he was right there was no fun in safety – but that didn’t mean he had to go get himself eaten, or worse – bitten; then he’d die slowly, like their uncle Thunderbolt JR.

“Peka,” Neka called as loudly as she dared, she hasn’t told the others in her tribe but she doubted on finding Peka herself.

“Ohhh Yeah!” Moaned Peka’s voice, close but up high?

Neka looked up and saw her brother and his very annoying friend, Panther, jumping from thick vine into the huge abyss, the black, unforgiving, water hid monsters like the mosasaur, which would kill and eat Peka or Panther in one bite.

“No!” Neka screamed, now that she saw Peka being an idiot she didn’t care if she got the looks from a buitrerapor, an age long dinosaur that ate anything that had meat on its bones or people.

“Ha, come join us Neka – or are you scared?” Panther taunted from the water, his packed, tan, chest was bare and messed with Neka’s brain for a minute – but only a minute.

“Drop dead and say ‘Hello’ to Satin for me!” Neka yelled, doing an old motion that the tribe thought was taboo and wrong – the motion was keeping your hand pointed backwards with all your fingers down but your middle one.

Panther laughed and his blond head disappeared under the dark water.

When this was going on Peka took his one and only chance to drive into the water before Neka yelled some more or got their mother.

Neka, Peka, and Panther lived in South America, but they didn’t know that, they didn’t know what math was, or that one day people will call their time the Stone Age, they didn’t know that people will drive in cars, or own cell phones, and worry about their jobs or not doing their homework instead of death or eating super at all.

All they knew was that they were part of the Zielta tribe and that there was a lot of dangers and if they weren’t careful they could get eaten, bitten, or get diseases. For them just blinking the wrong way could cause death.

“Come on Sister, the water is safe today.” Peka said with an air of confidence.

It seemed to Neka that she was the only one who was listening in class – the water was never safe, the open planes were safer than the water, and that was saying something.

“No, Peka, come on and get out before I get Mother.” Neka said, looking at the bottom of the water that she could not see.

Suddenly the water broke through and something grabbed Neka and pulled her in, Neka screamed and tried to stay on lad but it didn’t really work; Neka was skinny, but strong, she was beautiful, but had scares from working and from a close shave with a quttew (type of snake).

In the dark, cold, water, Neka saw that what had grabbed her and pulled her in was not a water monster but Panther, who was laughing his head off.

“Panther, you monnka hictty watta!” Neka screamed – the saying was very old and bad, her mother would have spanked her silly for saying something like that and not being in pain.

Panther stopped laughing and frowned, “I was just getting a laugh.” He said, looking ashamed.

“Well it wasn’t funny, the next time you guys try to get yourselves killed; you can bet I won’t come to help!” Neka screamed – beyond mad at Panther and a laughing Peka.

Neka got out of the water quickly and marched the three miles back to the tribe in a jet of fury, thinking horrible things of her twin and Panther – I mean how could they be so stupid? They were going to get themselves killed!

Then again everyone thought that they’d be better off without Panther and Peka around – mostly Huge and Mattra, Huge runs the small tribe of twenty and Mattra was his son, who will take over one day, and will (hopefully) marry Neka.

The tribe is small but they were very good at living – the oldest was Huge and he was eighty-two years old.

Neka, Peka, Panther, and Mattra is sixteen – the oldest of the kids, besides Treer, who was twenty-eight, but was always acting weird and tripping over his own feet like he didn’t know how  to walk straight.

“Where is your brother, Neka?” Neka’s mother, Merrla, asked in her soft voice while she twisted little McKenna’s hair in a pony tail that was tied with thinner vines.

“Nene!” McKenna yelled happily, putting her small arms around Neka’s legs.

“Peka and Panther are swimming in the abyss, and I’m sick of watching them and keeping them out of trouble – I’m done Mother!” Neka yelled softly because McKenna didn’t like it when people yelled.

Merrla looked at Neka calmly and then said, “Usually out of three or two kids born there is one who . . . won’t make it, like my brother – it is time for you to stop babying Peka and Panther and let God take them or let them fly away and live on their own like the birds.” Merrla had tears in her eyes but they were tears of understanding and sadness because she didn’t really think Peka or Panther would make it without Neka helping them.

Neka was pleased that her mother was neither mad or upset that she was done with her twin and his stupid friend – if she ever talked to them again it would be too soon.

It was no surprise that Peka and Panther were gone for super that night – normally Neka would have to pull them to the tribe to eat, but she was done, so instead she ate and flirted with Mattra while Huge told tribe stories and the Mothers did the kids hair and crushed berries.

Neka enjoyed being free of Panther’s cocky ways and Peka’s annoying and stupid stunts – even though she mostly blamed Panther for them.

“Do you want to go hunting with me tomorrow, Neka?” Mattra said, his grey eyes were bright and his brown hair was untidy – but to Neka it made him cuter.

“I’d love to, Mattra.” Neka fluster, her blue eyes looked everywhere but at him and a piece of her blond/brown hair fell into her face – and Mattra tucked it behide her ear for her.

Neka’s stomach fluttered inside her chest and she could have never felt happier in that moment.
