Chapter Eight

My desk phone rang, and I picked up.

"Hello."

"Can you meet us in the boardroom?" Joey Larson asked.

"Sure. What's up?"

"We've got the last movements of the the three younger Meadow victims."

"I'll be right there."

I grabbed my cell phone, slipping into the big right hand patch pocket on my jacket. Turning to the left I walked into Chayton's office. He was back after a week with his home office.

"The team has results on the last known activities for the younger Meadow victims."

He grabbed his phone and his laptop, unplugging the later quickly.

"I wonder what they've discovered."

"Me too. Just need to confirm our appointment with Kinta Tsosie when I have a second. He left me a text message and a date and time for us to meet with him. He's making a trip down to our end of the reserve to discuss our wedding plans," I said as we walked down the hall toward the board room.

"Will he be meeting us at Malia's?" Chayton asked.

"Yes, and he's interested in the healers working from Grandfather's home in the village too. We'll talk more later. Let's see what our research team has for us."

There was a map of the Reno Nevada State University up on the screen by the time I settled in one o f the chairs. Four different color trails were displayed and the legend at the bottom gave the names associated with each of them.

The last seen area was the same for three of them, and Haloke's was close enough for it to be considered relevant as well.

Three of the four were seen walking close the south end of Manzanita Lake and Haloke was last seen at the north end. The only building close to the lake was Clark Administration. Reno police had the CCTV video showing Olathe McPheters as she left the building. Witnesses put all of the others in the building at one point or another within the last few days before they were murdered.

"We've asked for a list of employees who have been with the University for the last ten years and had reason to be in the Clark Administration building for work or maintenance reasons. It's place to start looking for names to investigate." Joey said.

"Good work," I said. "Do you need me to help you with a warrant for the information?"

"No," Maureen chimed in. "The person we spoke to said she was cleared to cooperate as soon as I started asking about Haloke. I started by asking the registrar's office for her schedule if they had any remaining records. She was a pretty popular student, and extremely bright as I found out."

Chayton nodded. "I remember Chidi talking about surprising her with a night out when she made the Dean's list."

"I should have interviewed you too," Maureen said. "Can I?"

"I can't add much other than confirming what you already know about her intelligence. I think she had a grant or scholarship as well."

"See, I knew there was something there," Meixing said. "I'll check into the grant angle. They didn't have scholarships, but I never checked with the state and federal governments for grants."

"As usual investigating these cases is in the details," I said.

"Speaking of details, I think we have our mole. It seems to be at the Army base where Sparky and Mooch train and prepare for their missions. I spoke to their commander, and he has several civilians cleared to work the administrative duties tracking hours and other particulars. He's in the process of sorting it out now. Their entire office IT network is infected with malware and I was able to trace where it was sending information."

"Can you share your findings?" Chayton asked.

"Not yet. I'm kind of caught in a bind. While I was with BAU, they started my applications for top secret clearance, and asked if you two are cleared as well."

I nodded and so did Chayton. "I'll talk to Edison about the rest of the office. I think we're going to be caught in some pretty sensitive investigations moving forward. Clearances for all of us would be an advantage, but I'm not certain now to proceed."

"Talk to Edith," Meixing said. "The head of the BAU said she would be able to expedite."

"Holy crap!" Joey exclaimed. "This getting tense."

"Are you okay with it?" I asked.

"Sure, but still, wow!" Joey sounded a little overwhelmed. "How does it work? I mean what do I do?"

"Just be absolutely truthful about every question they ask you. Don't try and hide anything and you'll be okay. Even if it's going to embarrass you," I told him.

Chayton nodded, as did Meixing. "They don't share anything you tell them, and we're all in the same boat here."

Joey let out a long breath, as did Maureen as she looked up at me.

She sounded rueful as she spoke, "I'm still not looking forward to it."

"Join the club. But in the long run, if you end up in any sort of government work, it will stand you in good stead." I stayed silent for a minute waiting for any further questions.

"Where is Spunky?" Meixing asked. "I thought she was supposed to be in the office today."

"She's on a couple of weeks vacation before she starts here," Chayton said. "Her sister was found in records recovered from one of the other Domestic Aide Agencies. Her next mission will be with Alyana and me and perhaps Mooch to find her. She was sold to a gentleman who immediately sailed away in a yacht."

"I have the lists of victims," Meixing said. "Do we have the name of the yacht?"

"I haven't seen it in our updates as of yet, unless I missed it," I said.

"By the way, our family has decided to hold a celebration of life for my sister and my grandmother in around two weeks. I'll need about a week off."

"Let Jane know Meixing. I'm sorry your family has to go through this," I said.

"At least we know now. And I get to be part of the team to solve it too. I couldn't be more grateful. We're going to them. Both of them."

Everyone in the room nodded as she spoke.

"One way or another. By the way, I'm requesting the case records from Reno PD for all four. Maybe there's something in them we missed."

"Or you will find reason to recommend discipline," Joey said.

"Exactly."

"Is there anything else?" Chayton asked.

"I that's all for now," Meixing said. "Marcel just pinged me with a new update on Lost Sheep."

My phone was vibrating in my pocket too.

"Then start eliminating suspects from the employee lists. Do the background checks and see if anything pops," I requested.

"We'll split them between us and get back to you," Joey said.

I nodded and stood. "I'll take a few of those names too, Meixing." Why should they have all the fun.
