SEVEN
We drive through the bumpy streets in silence. Camden continues looking at the seat head in front of him. Soon, we reach level 10 head quarters. It is the nicest of any level living place. Around the center of the city it is the most updated in architecture and technology.
All three cars arrive at the same time. I follow Camden out of the car and walk into the large building. As we enter, Camden leaves my side and goes to a set of elevators located on the left of the entrance. I pause for a second to take in my surroundings. The building is completely glass, nothing like the level 4 head quarters. A female receptionist looks down at a computer and types. Dark circles are visible under her eyes indicating a lack of sleep. I have no clue what level she is from. I start towards her but am stopped by Conrad.
"Welcome to your new home" his voice echoes around the lobby of the building. "Your living space is located on floor five. A banquet has been prepared in honour of your arrival", he says in a merry tone.
"It begins at 5:30. Don't be late" he tells me as if warning me.
I nod. "Thank you!" I say to him as he heads over to one of the elevators. The other two level 10 members, Natasha Barrera and Thomas Byrd, are already waiting for Conrad. As the elevator door is closing I realize I probably should've gone on with them.
"Wait!" I yell as I run the elevator. But I am too late and I see the digital number ascending. I sigh and press the up button. I wait for a few seconds before the other elevator doors open. I step inside, press the '5' button, and turn to see Camden standing in the corner. I thought he had already gone up.
"What floor?" I ask, trying to be polite.
"Five" he replies. This puzzles me, but I assume he must be on the same floor as me. We go up in silence like we did in the car. The elevator dings and the doors open onto the fifth floor. I catch my breath trying to take it all in. The room is the size of my family's apartment, with glass windows overlooking the city. All the amenities are updated. I am in aw. Suddenly Camden wraps his hand around my forearm and drags me to the suite's bathroom.
"What are you doing? Let go!" I scream at him, struggling. We enter the bathroom. He lets go of my hand, closes the door and stands in front of it so I can't get past.
I am about to attack him when he says, "I'm sorry about that. This was the only room without camera's".
"Cameras?" I question aloud. Why would this building need cameras?
"Look, I don't have much time for questions. All I can say is that training is intense. You would wish you were dead by the end of it" he pauses to check his watch. "I have to go. We can talk about this later" he exits the bathroom and goes to the elevator.
"Wait!" I call after him. He doesn't wait. He just keeps walking away until he has disappeared in the elevator. I huff. Nobody has time for anything around here unless it is properly scheduled. I go back into the bathroom to get ready for the dinner. I decide to keep the clothes I'm wearing to signify my old level. In the bathroom I find a brush to fix my hair with. After preparing myself, I look around my room for a clock. I find a digital one on the nightstand beside my new bed. It is 2:15. 'Plenty of time for a short nap' I think. I pull myself onto the bed and curl up on top of the covers. Today has been a long day. The mattress cushions my body and I feel like I am on a cloud. Slowly I become less aware of my surroundings as sleep takes over my mind.

As I wake I take a few seconds to stretch before checking the time. It is 5:25. 'Damn it'. I had overslept. I rush into the bathroom and fix my hair up, then wait for the elevator to arrive on my floor. As soon as it does I squeeze through the expanding gap in between the doors and rapidly hit three and the close button over and over. The elevator stops on floor three where a very upset looking Conrad greets me.
"You're late", he sneers at me. I take a look at a large clock mounted to the wall. It reads 5:31.
"Sorry" I apologize. I sit down beside Natasha, across from Camden. Multiple 1s come into the room, carrying plates for our dinner. A roast beef is set in front of me. I have never tried it before. My family, being in level 4, couldn't afford it. I take a small piece and a few vegetables. The other 10s take a large amount of food on their plates. I start eating when they do. The meat is unlike anything I've had before. I savor each bite, while everyone else wolfs his or her food down. The meal is awfully quiet. I remember Camden's warning about my training.
"What will my training be like?" I ask. Everyone stays silent as if thinking what they should say.
"It is a wonderful program that, well, tests how smart you are," Conrad answers.
"Like the intellect tests?" I say.
"Exactly!" Conrad says.
"You can't be serious. It is-" Camden starts. Conrad gives him a cold stare. Camden looks down at his plate and continues eating.
I am full about half way through everyone else's meal. I sit and wait.
"You might as well go to bed now. Training starts early tomorrow morning" Conrad chirps. I nod and go back up to my room, excited for training to start tomorrow.
