Cycle Down

P.S. They said we were allowed to write poetry based on stories we liked. Ergo, this.
The woman lay inside her cell,
Her body aching, pain a well,
As she remembered brighter days,
When she followed lighter ways.
Once upon a time she was
A strong young lady, wise she was,
And had an apprentice whom she loved,
But otherwise she was unloved.
An enormous army came and claimed
They were truly God's acclaimed
The woman, anxious for her child
Came up with a plan, dark and wild.
The idea of power tempted her,
And then, against her superiors,
She cast the spell, and bound in chains,
She fled from those who'd caused her pain.
Now she sits, lonely still,
In the cell of those who'd killed
Her dearest apprentice, dearest friend,
And her life was near its end.
Bitterness clenched her heart - "I say,
I will not go out this way."
So when her child came to her side,
She played her heart like ocean tides.
She cast a spell once more, and left
The unloved child, Hades' guest,
And she found that with that ride
Came her almost-suicide.
