Chapter 3C
After a month of research, Thalos had discovered more than he wanted. And on that very day, he told me about a cyclical pattern of events that he believed concerned the safety of the entire world.
Records from the past 500 years indicated an increasingly intense and extreme cycle of war and catastrophic events.
"All of it points to series of events that could completely wipe out life on the continent within the next five years."
"Just the continent? Just life?" I asked him in a calm tone, as if it were nothing important.
"Yes, ma'am. Did you already know this? Don't you think we should do something?"
"What do you think? I need to know your thoughts." I remained indifferent, showing no emotion whatsoever.
"I know that if this happens, perhaps the Necropolis will expand its territory? Death will reign. But wouldn't that go against the will and principles of this kingdom?"
"Of course, even if death covered the entire world, the Necropolis wouldn't expand an inch. Only those who truly need it will come here, you know that. Now, I need to know what you want. Will you become part of this self-destructive purge or..." I left the sentence unfinished, letting him finish it himself.
Thalos's face was serious. He leaned back on the sofa, lost in thought for a moment. I patiently waited for his answer. At the same time, he turned back to me, giving me a scrutinizing look I never thought I'd receive from him.
"Even if this is the will of an all-powerful being, I won't sit idly by while all living creatures are deprived of their right to live. This isn't a natural purge. It's happening intentionally."
"What will you do? It seems the forces behind this aren't something you can handle one-on-one."
"I'll do everything. I'll seek allies."
"Even though you can't know what you're up against and you're calling for more people to walk into death?"
"That can be figured out later, and I don't think you'll just stand by and watch the world end like that."
"You know, the sorceress Divris ran to the Necropolis because her homeland was invaded, war, racial conflict, conflict between ideologies using magic. The world across the ocean is an endless war, there's no love or peace. She simply wants to live in peace. Do you think she'll be willing to save it?" I spoke of Divris in the third person because I didn't want to feel too self-centered.
"Perhaps she should have stayed in a place like mine for 60 years to see how much greater the hope there is compared to where I am. I've been in the Abyss for that long; I know how precious life is when all around you are chanting the names of gods like Ignarius and Gorthos. I don't want the world to become a second Abyss like that."
That statement seemed to move me to tears. I didn't try to hide my emotions.
I admit I was testing him, even though I was sure he would respond that way. But I was still scrutinizing his courage and integrity. That was truly essential for the upcoming battle.
I left my desk and walked over to him on the long sofa, sitting down beside him. Thalos sat stiffly, unable to hide his anxiety.
"You know, you don't look like a demon at all, that was my first thought when I met you. A god of light choosing you wasn't a coincidence. You have the heart of an angel. You deserve to be given the most beautiful white wings, but who needs them to prove anything? Your presence here, telling me your thoughts, is enough. But you still have a long way to go to stop this event. You need allies, yes, you will convince them to fight alongside you, to live and die with you. How many people out there do you think are capable of resisting the will of a god? I'm just talking about reality; this isn't a hero story, it's a story of survival."
"I don't know, maybe that was my purpose in coming here, and now I've found it."
I had never heard what happened to Thalos before he became an incubus, and today I heard everything. He truly is a character created and then forgotten by the author. Perhaps he's too special, too complex, and too unpredictable. And now he's searching for the meaning of his own existence.
"Perhaps I'm still too naive about the outside world. But my small memories as a half-elf can't prevent me from seeing my beautiful world destroyed. Even though my family seems all gone, my sense of HOME remains. Wasn't that once your HOME too?"
I sat up and motioned for Thalos to follow.
He sat still, his eyes wide, staring at me, not understanding why I had acted so suddenly.
"Aren't you waiting for your gift? This isn't an ordinary gift. Let's go to your room. Tonight, you'll get to sleep like a normal person."
Incubus, like succubus, can sleep. These demons sleep incredibly soundly, but this sleeping ability is a deadly weapon that affects sentient beings and even undead with spiritual attributes, such as ghosts and vengeful spirits. The Amethyst Mansion, the Library, and the workshop, along with all the workers, apprentices, and servants, can all be harmed by the incubus's passive abilities while they sleep. That's why, since Thalos started working for me, he's had to interrupt his sleeping, leading to a decline in his physical strength and health.
When I asked him about his condition, he refused to reveal his true health status. He spent all day engrossed in his research. When his body became emaciated and gaunt, like someone with a terminal illness, he couldn't deny it anymore.
I didn't need to ask to know the answer. Therefore, I secretly researched how Thalos could safely live like a normal person surrounded by all things without harming himself or others.
Fortunately, this problem struck a chord with Divris's expertise – Mind Illusion.
With my understanding of magic that can deeply affect the minds of all living beings, I was able to specially devise a method to interfere with Thalos's mind so he could sleep peacefully, but there was a drawback.
Thalos was extremely quick-witted; he anticipated what that drawback was.
"There's no way I would refuse such a privilege just because of a trivial inconvenience. For demons, power is paramount, a measure of status and authority. And it means nothing once I leave the Abyss. Even there, that power only helps me survive. That power can't save anyone; it only brings pain and destruction. How I long to return to being human. I want to sleep and have peaceful dreams, not the bloodthirsty, soul-hungry gaze that inflicts harm."
I sat down and took his hand. Although he showed no emotion, I knew what he said was sincere. Those emotions were pouring out through his trembling.
"The journey against the power of the gods won't be easy, but I believe you can do it. My magic contributes very little; you will accomplish most of it. To me, you are very strong, a strength that doesn't come from your demon bloodline, but from your past life as an half-elf. The presence and power of that young man will continue to shine brightly."
"Call me Lynn, that's the young man's name. I wanted to be called by that name instead of Thalos, the demon name given to me."
"I know, my dear Lynn. From now on, you will be Lynn, my exceptionally talented apprentice."
"And Daisy's warm and handsome caregiver too." Daisy unexpectedly jumped and hugged Lynn.
"And the part-time librarian for the month as well." Dahlia also joined in the emotional praise.
Afterward, many spirits who were librarians at the Amethyst Library continued to offer sincere encouragement and love to Lynn.
I suddenly forgot that Lynn had been with me and the library staff for over two months, and that everyone (mostly spirits) had gradually developed a fondness for him.
"Thank you everyone."
As soon as he finished speaking, my magic began to seep through his nervous system, putting him into a very long sleep.
My magic requires the caster to travel into the mind of the 'patient.' Therefore, I couldn't avoid confronting his memories. And I wasn't afraid to face them; on the contrary, I wanted to know them, because all of those things had shaped who he was now.
And so, Lynn and I slept for two days. I had expended a lot of magic power, but it was all worthwhile.
When Lynn opened his eyes, I saw a glimmer of hope in them. It shone brighter, signaling that my method had worked. Although he couldn't cry yet, Lynn was able to communicate his emotions more sensitively and actively, no longer just silent and lifeless as before.
While this is only the first step and the journey for Thalos to become Lynn is still long, it's an important one. It shows that this world can be saved and that somehow I have the ability to do so.
