Chapter 3: Suspicious Activity
Silver's eyes snapped open, only to be greeted by a wall of darkness shrouding the cave. She blinked a few times, trying to get rid of the sleepiness that was covering her. A small blast of light coming from one of her brother's maws helped and she winced at the sudden flair. It was probably Raize. He often snored in his sleep and every snore would create a small tongue of fire. Classical fire dragon.
Sighing she carefully got out of her metal nest. Because of the lack of light it looked strangely black in the cave, besides the sudden flares of fire that were breathed forth. She stepped out of the nest, keeping her metal tail from touching it in case it made a metallic screech that would definitely wake her brothers up. Once she was free she padded to the exit of the cave, rolling her wing joints to warm them up and get them ready for the small flight ahead.
She wouldn't be travelling far, so if she did run into any trouble all she would need to do was to roar to wake the whole valley up into a frenzy, not that she would run into trouble. Once she was outside she stretched her body much like a cat and swished her tail from side to side, knowing that the metal would be rather cool after staying still for so long. It was one of the problems that her father had as well. When a metal dragon wakes up they are often quite stiff in the joints and they need to move around a little before taking flight or else it would end badly. Luckily for her however she hadn't been asleep that long and could easily warm up.
Once she was satisfied she took to the air with a couple beets of her metallic wings. It was a full moon that night and the forest shone with a silver light. It also shined from her wings and tail, but she didn't bother with it too much like the sun. At least it wasn't a glare. The only problem with it was that any dragons awake, or any dragon hunters would see her quite easily. The thought caused her to worry slightly, but she quickly shook it off as she glided over her destination.
Pulling in her wings she put herself into a steep dive. The place she was aiming for was a small eddie at the bottom of a mountain. It didn't seem to have much significance, except for the fact it was well hidden in between the trees and there seemed to be quiet a substantial amount of leaves spread throughout it. Silver landed with a quite thud and padded over into the small overhang. It was just big enough to accommodate her body, and she knew that soon she would have to make it bigger to be able to fit inside.
Smiling she pawed around in the leaves for a second, looking for something, before gripping a twig in between her talons and pulling. It took a couple of seconds but eventually the ground moved. It opened nearly silently and Silver grinned as she slipped inside, closing the door behind her with her tail.
To a new person they would be utterly shocked by what they saw underneath the curtain of growth. For one thing where the leaves had opened into a small door there was a metal plating underneath, reflecting light from the numerous fire torches hung up on the cave walls. Another surprising factor was that instead of the normal earthy texture of cave walls, every surface was covered in a thick layer of metal, stretching into a small tunnel.
Silver took a moment to look around, before beginning to pad down the tunnel. Each torch cast a strange glow that caused the tunnel to reflect orange and yellow firelight throughout the whole tunnel, and off Silver's shell. Every step she took echoed sullenly throughout, creating a rather eyrie feel to the escapade, and it made Silver smile.
Eventually the tunnel ended, spreading out into a large cavern that probably encompassed most of the mountain. The cavern's walls weren't entirely covered with metal like the tunnel was, nor was it entirely lit up by torches, but instead there was the occasional torch on the ground and metallic platforms settled through area. On each platform were a number of different metallic statues, such as dragons, humans and the occasional odd-looking construction that took no particular shape. There were around twenty such structures around the cave creating a small metallic statue garden.
Silver felt herself smile at her creations and swished her tail in pride. This was the one place where she was able to just sit and let her passion take control. She loved creating things with her metal breath, and calving them into the perfect shapes. It made her shiver with excitement once the finished structure stood before her in its full glory. For a while she hadn't been able to get to this place because of her fathers constant training and the fact that dragons seemed to follow her everywhere. She wanted to keep this skill a secret. Not because of the embarrassment she may feel because of it, but because of the extra attention she would receive had she revealed them. So she had gone to great pains to keep it a secret.
She padded through the statues to one that was half finished. It was a dragon, standing up on two legs with its wings outstretched, or at least that was how she imagined it to be once it was finished. At that moment it was merely a set of legs and half a torso, not much to look at. Sitting down in front of it she sighed, wondering what to do with her unfinished statue next. She summoned a glob of metal from her throat and shot it in a stream at the edge of the statue, creating a glob of unglorified metal around the edge. She transformed her tail into a razor sharp blade and began to work on the metal, cutting off bits at a time and creating a smooth surface. If she accidently shaved off a bit more metal then she was supposed to then she would add a little more and shave it off again. It was tenuous work, and would seem boring for most dragons but for Silver it allowed her to stop thinking and just work, if only for a little while.
Eventually however the time got away from her and she was forced to stop, knowing she had spent longer there then she should have. Another metre had been added to the statue's torso and she had also begun working on its tail. She was looking forward to the finished project. Sighing she got up from where she had been sitting and made her way back through the metal tunnel to the trapdoor she had created. She pushed it open slowly, waiting to see if anyone was outside. No one was, so she pushed the trapdoor further open and pulled herself out.
She closed it and made sure that all the leaves and sticks were still stuck on top, creating a seemingly natural forest floor. Satisfied she walked out from under the small overhang and was about to take off into the air when something stopped her. A strange sent was in the air, human, but different from Liam's. Frowning Silver began to stalk through the forest, willing the metal shell on her back to become dark. This time it decided to listen and the gleaning shine that usually shone from it disappeared as it became a deep grey instead of the silver it usually was, not perfect but it would have to do.
It was still dark, but the horizon was slowly starting to light up as the sun rose slowly. Silver had stayed in her cave longer then she thought she had. Shrugging she followed the scent until it came to a halt near the base of one of the mountains. Finding a place where she could wedge herself into she scanned the area for the source of the strange human smell.
Her gaze enlightened on a human, standing not far from her hiding spot with one of the strange human implements pressed against its ear. The one that allowed it to talk with other humans from far away. A cell phone, she thought it was called. The human looked familiar as well, and it only took a moment for Silver to realise who it was. It was Zach, the new tourist who had arrived the previous day. What was he doing out here?
Frowning Silver strained her hearing glands to pick up what the human was saying into his cell phone.
"Are you ready for the attack?" Zach hissed into the phone.
There was a pause before he said, "Good. That was all I wanted to know. I think Liam is starting to suspect me. Do you think you can set it up for this morning, while all the dragons are asleep? It'll be easier then." A pause, "Yes, though make sure that Elron and his hatchling whelp are captured alive." Another pause, "You may kill the others if you wish, though I would advise against it. These dragons are very close to there families and if you kill one the others will start to rage," he chuckled, "Dragons are really just humans with a better physical body and not as much brains."
It took Silver a moment to realise what the human was talking about. Fear shot through her and she quickly gazed at the sky. The sun was nearly up. Would she be able to get out of there without warning Zach and whatever human was on the other end of the phone? She would have to risk it because it sounded as if the attack as going to happen soon. As silently and stealthily as she could she snuck out of the crevice and began to make her way towards the forest.
Her dark grey shell was beginning to gain its sheen again as her emotions clouded her focus on it. As the sun finally shone from the sky it hit the now silver shell on her back, casting a brilliant light over the forest. She cursed, using one of the words Liam had taught her and quickly took off into the air. She had no doubt that Zach had seen her now. Her speculation was quickly answered as two gunshots pieced the air in two bangs. Silver squeaked in alarm and dove down towards the forest, flapping her wings as hard as she could. Her silver form shot through the air in a speed she had never flown before. She flew so fast she nearly passed by her cave.
Pulling herself to a stop she quickly entered the cave with a couple of wing beets.
"Dad! Mum! Wake up! Quick!" she roared as loud as she could, running into her parent's side of the cave.
They were tangled up in each other's wings, lying side-by-side and sleeping peacefully. As Silver ran into the room they began to move slightly. Elron raised his head and looked at his daughter with a bleary expression.
"Why are you up so early Silver?" he asked.
"The humans are coming!" She yelled at him, "I heard Zach, the new tourist, talking to them. They're going to attack this morning! Get up!"
At the news Elron was instantly on his feet. He quickly nudged his mate awake, causing her to murmur slightly in annoyance, but once he told her the reason she was awake as quickly as Elron had been.
"Silver, go and wake your brothers. Get them to come to the outside of the cave," he said.
Silver nodded quickly and broke into another run, entering her own sleeping cavern she shared. Both Raize and Blaze were still fast asleep, and fire was still shooting from Raize's nostrils with every breath. They quickly woke however as Silver let out a bungling roar that sounded like metal clashing together. Blaze snarled at his sister as he got to his feet while Raize only groaned, putting his wings over his head.
"What was that for Silver? It's not time to wake up yet, is it?" asked Blaze.
Silver shook her head, "Humans are coming."
Both Raize and Blaze were instantly to there feet. They followed Silver out into the open. Half the sun was visible now, casting a strange illuminating glow over the valley. Oranges, purples and reds shone from Silver's back and over the valley. Elron and Scarlet were already there, waiting for their hatchlings.
"Cover your ears," said Elron, "This will be loud."
They all placed their wings over their heads to block off the sound they knew would come. Elron opened his maw and let loose a large clanging roar that screeched from the mountainside and echoed down into the valley in a cacophony of sound. Even with her wings shield her Silver felt the sound reverberate through her whole body causing the metal on her back to ripple slightly. Elron closed his mouth with a snap and sound stopped. The dragon family uncovered there heads and looked around. If no one were awake after that roar then Silver would be immensely surprised. It was a roar that would awake the dead.
A minute passed and dragons started appearing from their caves. A few of them took flight towards Elron's cave, probably wondering what the warning was for. It was soon answered however as Silver spotted something in the distance. It was steadily coming closer and the sound it was creating began to reverberate among the mountains.
"Look!" cried Silver, point with her talon towards the steadily approaching planes.
Elron growled as he spotted them as well and turned towards his family, "Get ready. Hatchlings remember what I taught you, guard each other and if it comes to it, run."
The three of them nodded and Elron took to the air. The rest of his family followed and other dragons were beginning to meet with him in the air as well. Soon it seemed as if the whole valley had come to join them. It was more then Silver knew about and her confidence boosted. There were no way humans could fight against this many dragons, could they?
