Things We Appreciate
Azun:
Why did he always have to state his opinion at the wrong time?
Ames got me fired, but I shouldn't have acted up like that, losing my cool in front of my boss. It was foolish of me.
Ames and I have very similar names. After Mike and Luke, Dad didn't think much of us. Perhaps that was why Ames thought he must prove himself to be different from me.
But then again I would never know why my father named us what he did. No matter how hard I tried and begged, he won't even talk to me.
Azun and Ames, two different similar names, Azun meaning 'understated' and Ames meaning 'burden'. We were literally our name's meanings.
"Well, if it isn't Azun Watcher." I heard Ames behind me, his voice dripping with sass.
I kept my cool as I turned around. "Ames Pisces." I smiled, if he is going to state my middle name, I'll play at whatever game he is laying out.
"Seems as if my brother is the better lawyer." Larkin stated, as she stood beside her brother.
"That's alright, I am not the best lawyer out there." I said. "I can not be the best after only a year on the job, that kind of work takes months to build."
"Yet, Ames did that in a week." Larkin teased.
"Larkin, I heard you turned fourteen." I changed the conversation. "How's that?"
"Great." She sassed, just like Ames. "I have the power of wind."
"That's so amazing, congratulations!"
"Yeah, better than your useless power."
My sisters were all extremely close in age. Mike was eighteen and the eldest, Luke was a year younger but matured at eighteen as well. I'm was next with a matured age of seventeen, then Ames with a matured age of sixteen, Vestry with a matured age of seventeen and finally Dustan with a matured age of nineteen. Then Nathaniel, who just turned fourteen. All the boys were all a year apart from each other in birth years.
A year later the quadruplets were born, Jasper, Emler, Aspen and Arielle. They all turned fourteen last year and most were starting to show signs of maturity as they reach the age of sixteen.
Then finally a year after the four girls came Larkin, who turned fourteen yesterday.
"There was something I was supposed to tell you." Ames interrupted. "Oh yeah, Luke wants to STAR you."
I sighed. STAR was our part of the galaxy's video chatting system. Most galactic meetings were held using STAR. It cost a lot to STAR someone, so this must be important. Luke was the second eldest of the twelve children, right above me. He left with Mike ages ago to travel across the galaxy. They send postcards home every now and then. Last I saw they were off in Francium, with a bunch of ladies.
"What would Luke want to STAR me for?" I asked.
"I don't know." Ames snickered at me, then sauntered off to my job that he stole.
"You're nothing?" Larkin told me, following her brother. "Just to let you know."
I walked away. The last comment hurt. I knew my power was dirt, but I could do something with my life. I practiced law. Law school was tough, but Ames stole my future, again. He stole every chance I had in any club or class at school, he made sure he got better grades than me, better friends, better food. Everything about his life just had to be better then mine.
I put my hands in my pockets, glancing down at my black shoes. Why did I wear the same thing every day? Black suit, black shoes, silver tie. I looked around, the city was awake, I was awake. I was lucky to be alive right now. I was lucky to be here. That itself was enough for me.
