Chapter Five
"What would you like to know?"
"Everything"
Jett stared at Sage for few moments that shifted herself up against the propped-up pillows to get in a better position.
"What do you mean by 'everything?"
Sage straightened herself as well, "What happened to you those past 2 years. Why did you stop talking to me? And why did you join Kingdom?"
Jett felt like she has told everyone the reason why she joined Kingdom and what happened to the point where its practically implemented in her brain. Jett let out a nervous sigh and began to explain what happened to her. Mostly how she lost her self-confidence and Kingdom swooped her up.
"So the reason you have radianite in your body is because of Kingdom?"
Jett nodded sheepishly.
"Why did you try to forget me? Why did you give up on your dreams?"
Jett found herself overwhelmed with all the questions, and the faint headache wasn't helping her think at all.
Sage must've noticed and she began to feel a bit guilty, "Sorry, I shouldn't have pushed this on you. You just woke up and I-"
"Sage. It's okay, you deserve to know what happened. I can't hide it from you forever"
Sage didn't complain about getting the answers she wanted to she kept her mouth shut to wait for what Jett had to say.
Jett released a sigh before continuing, "It's not like I wanted to forget you. I just thought it was for the best. I was losing myself and I didn't want to burden you with my issues. You had a lot of stuff on your plate as well. It would be selfish of me to push my problems to you when you have your own to deal with. And, at some point during the Academy, I hit this brick wall. I felt like I wasn't moving forward and I started being careless. And eventually, I just lost it, and left"
Sage bit her inner cheeks to keep from speaking and when Jett came to a halt with what she was saying, she took the opportunity to speak.
"..I think It was selfish for you to try and forget me. Even if you said it was unintentional, you still did it. You threw me away when I need you most, and losing you wasn't something simple to take in. It hurts that you did that to me, and I don't think I can forgive you for that. And as for the Academy issues, I don't blame you for getting overwhelmed, but you can't run from things once it starts to get hard. You won't overcome them if you do that"
Jett could feel herself shrinking the longer Sage went on. She felt like she was getting scolded- well she was, but it hurt. She felt like Sage's words were piercing straight into her heart and snapping it in half.
"But-" Sage quickly said after noticing Jett looking like she was beating herself up inside "That doesn't mean I don't want to try. I realized that I wasn't the best person to you either. When you were shutting me down, I never tried hard enough to get you back to me. I just watched you leave and accepted it. So, I want to try"
Jett's heart felt like it was going to explode. She really was convinced that Sage was going to cut her off again but...she couldn't 't let Sage blame herself either.
"You can't burden yourself. I put you through enough trauma, and blaming yourself for not trying hard enough is stupid. Take some more credit for yourself, Sage" Jett said.
Sage narrowed her eyes, "No, I can't. There had to be some reason why you acted this way, maybe it was because of me-"
"No, Sage. Why do you jump to the conclusion of blaming yourself for people's mishaps? What happened to me was all based on my emotions alone. Please, just don't beat yourself up over a person like me" Jett fought with a slight crack in her voice.
Sage noticed the crack in her voice and she immediately wanted to pull her into a tight hug already, "If- If I can't beat myself up, you can't either"
Jett laughed softly, "That's not fair"
"Yes, it is. It's just making the rules fair"
"I don't understand why you're forgiving me though...I'm not really worth it, Sage"
"Ah ah, what did I just say about saying negative things about yourself. But to answer your question, I wouldn't be standing here If I thought you weren't worth it. Everyone is worth something and to someone"
Jett couldn't help but blush at the end of Sage's sentence. Did she mean something to her still? God, half-drunk thoughts were making Jett's brain boggle.
"I guess so"
"Yes, now I believe you're ready to head back to your cell?"
Jett whined at the thought of her head being pushed against the hard floor. The headache was still here and she couldn't imagine how bad it would get without the nice fluffy pillow she was laying on now.
Sage got up for her seat and stared down at Jett in silence.
Jett popped on eye opened and silently pleaded to stay here.
Without words, Sage knew what Jett was asking. She shook her head and sat back down with a sigh, "Okay, but only until you feel better"
Jett put her palms together and offered a soft smile, "Thanks"
The conversation the two shared must've drained Jett since the moment the room around them became silent, Jett had passed out from exhaustion. Soon the room was filled with Jett's soft breathing and Sage couldn't help but let the corners of her mouth tug into a smile.
Sage yet again stood up and walked to Jett, noticing strands of hair were messily all over her face. She nervously brought her hand to Jett's hair and pushed it back behind her ear. Her fingers lingered on the skin of Jett's cheek until she realized and pulled it back quickly. Sage turned around with a pinkish tint on her cheeks and covered her mouth. Her heart was racing more than usual.
What was this feeling?
~~
Jett awoke to the sound of soft humming and things being moved around. Her eyes fluttered open to see who was making the noise. Once the blurriness of sleep disappeared, her eyes focused on the backside of Sage.
Sage was hovering over the counter which held a lot of medical supplies. Jett remembered that Sage always wanted a clean and tidy workspace. She told Jett once that it was therapeutic to clean.
Sage must've noticed Jett had woken up due to the sound of rustling sheets, "Good morning, Jett"
"Morning" Jett muttered groggily.
Sage smiled to herself, remembering that Jett was definitely not a morning person. She turned around to see Jett stretching her body and arms in the bed and eventually went to slide off the bed onto her feet.
"Do you want me to get you some food?"
Jett waved her hand, "Nah, I can get it myself. Did you eat anything?"
"Not yet.."
"I can go and get it! My treat..for you letting me crash here" Jett hastily said.
Sage raises an eyebrow the shrugged, "Okay, I like the granola bars and yogurt"
Jett noted that into her brain and quickly went out the door. She knew she was in a good mood since she was practically bouncing on the balls of her feet.
"Why are you so chirpy this morning" Raze grumbled. It looked like she had just gotten back from a failed experiment with her robots because she had grease all over her face and clothes.
Jett shrugged, "Just am. But, you don't look so hot today"
"Actually I got burned at least a thousand times, so technically I did get hot today. But other than that, they're serving the really good pancakes I like today. So, I guess that saved my morning from being the worst of the worst"
Jett's stomach growled at the word pancakes. Last night she hadn't eaten anything, so she was practically drooling for food this morning.
The pair made their way down the hall and exchanged goodbyes once they hit the corner to Killjoy's room. That left Jett by herself to walk more down the hall to the cafeteria. Jett found it a little scary to walk down halls by herself since she might run into one of the members that hate her.
Luckily the walk to the cafeteria was no problem and when Jett opened the door, she almost cursed herself for believing no one was going to be in the cafeteria. Viper and Jett's eyes locked and Jett wanted to mentally kick herself in the face.
Jett knew there was no point in turning back now, so she walked up to the tables that were offering snacks. Jett tried her hardest to not make any eye contact with Viper as she went to grab a granola bar and yogurt.
The tension in the air was thick and Jett wanted to leave as soon as possible. At that moment, all her appetite left her stomach and she just decided to grab Sage's stuff and book it. Jett eventually made it to the door but a venomous voice pierced her ears drums.
"Don't think that just because Brimstone let you on this team, means that I'm going to accept you. I know the type of person you are, and I'm not going to fall for your lies"
Jett gulped thickly and went to turn around and say something, but by the time she did, the other exit door was slammed shut.
Jett knew that everyone on this team wasn't going to accept her right away. But, Jett was going to work at it and try to at least make it so she can walk around without thinking her head could get chopped off at any moment.
~~
"Hey, I got your food"
Sage beamed at Jett and quickly ushered her inside, "Great! I was wondering when you were getting back. I was starting to think you got lost"
"N-No, heh"
Sage took the food from Jett's hands with a quick 'thanks. She began to open the lid of her yogurt but stopped when she noticed Jett's hands were empty.
"Did you not get something to eat?"
Jett stopped her whistling to look at Sage, "Oh uh, nope. I'm not very hungry this morning"
Sage walked over to Jett and instinctively put the back of her hand to her forehead, "Are you not feeling well? Do you need more medicine?"
Jett instantly turned red and backed away from Sage's hand, "No! I'm fine- I just wasn't that hungry this morning. I don't usually like to eat food after a hangover anyways"
"Are you sure?"
Jett nodded, "Mhm, but I did happen to run into your scary friend"
"Scary friend?"
"Oh uh- y'know? Viper?"
Sage chewed on her granola bar slowly and waited for herself to swallow before speaking, "Oh, Viper. She's not that scary, trust me. Once you get to know her, she's a real sweetheart"
Jett couldn't help but feel just the slightest bit jealous at the relationship Sage had with Viper, but she knew she shouldn't complain.
"I see"
"Did she say something to you?"
"No, she just uh. She was giving a nice pep talk?"
Jett didn't know-how put the interaction she had with Viper into words, so she settled with that. Luckily, Sage didn't question it.
"I suppose that sounds like Viper. It's hard for her to trust enemies, though if she's giving you too much of a hard time, I can talk to her for you?"
Jet instantly shook her head, "N-No! It's fine, don't worry. I think I deserve it anyways"
"Can we make a rule? Every time you insult yourself, I can pinch you?"
Jett laughed, "Where did that come from?"
"We made a promise last night that we wouldn't blame or hurt ourselves. Yet, you keep doing it. So, I think we should make a punishment"
"But, I didn't even insult myself"
"Yes, you did!"
"Did not"
"Did too"
"Did not-"
Jett couldn't finish her sentence due to feeling a sharp pinch in her side causing her to jump back with a yelp, "Hey!"
Sage chuckled to herself and went to pinch Jett again but by the time she went to touch Jett, she was already dashed to the far corner of the room.
"Meanie" Jett pouted.
Sage shrugged, "Then stop being a meanie to yourself"
Jett wanted to sneak up on Sage but she practically jumped out of her skin when she heard the door bust open.
Yoru stood in the doorframe with a tired expression, "Brimstone wants to see us"
Sage looked over at Jett who looked confused at first then sighed, "Alrighty. Wanna guide us, Sage? I definitely don't know where his office is yet, and Yoru has too much of a small brain to know as well"
"It looks like I have no choice"
