Chapter 31
Everything stayed the same for a few moments. Akira started to become dizzy from shooting opponents from left to right.
The routine became like shoot, Adam’s pounces on enemies, shoot, Adam runs, shoot, Adam fights, shoot and so on and so forth.
It wasn’t long before she ran out of bullets, and she knew that it was a bad thing. If she was unable to fire, she wouldn’t be able to cover Adam’s back. The group was advancing rather slowly and they were losing men every minute. The enemy seemed to be increasing every minute that the future was starting to look bleak.
“I’m out of ammo! Dammit!” She clutched the gun in a hand and fought the urge to throw it away now that it became useless.
‘It’s alright Akira. You don’t have to worry.’ Adam whispered soothingly in her mind. ‘I’ll be able to handle this just fine.’
“But you . . . ! Argh! Isn’t there anything I can use?!”
“Er . . .” Ann started. “I got . . . these?”
Looking down at the girl curiously, she saw her holding up her darts. Akira almost crushed the girl into a hug—which she actually did.
“How the heck did you get these? I think you already gave me the rest back then.”
“Actually . . .” Ann stammered. “I kinda . . . found more.”
“Yeah . . . I did think they were fewer.”
Ann smiled at Akira sheepishly. The girl gave her another thankful nod before clipping some darts between her fingers and throwing it to her enemies. She managed to strike one on the shoulder, the other on the cheek. They all fell down just a moment later.
‘Where did you learn to throw like that?’
“I’ve got a lot of practice targeting the people I don’t like—teachers mostly.”
‘I really have a troublesome woman as my mate.’
A laugh bubbled from Akira’s lips. “You only noticed that now?”
‘Actually? No. I knew it a long time ago. You make a perfect luna.’
“Whatever, Alpha Jerk.”
‘Will you stop calling me that, already? Can’t you use something more intimate? Like honey? Or sweetie-pie?’
Akira reddened. “Shut up and focus, you dimwit. You’re gonna get us killed. Start with your jokes later.”
‘Alright. Whatever.’
Adam focused on the ongoing battle while Akira continued to watch his back. Everything went smoothly for the next few minutes until Kathrynne came running beside Adam, snapping her jaws around some guy from one corner and throwing him away before Akira even got the chance to shoot him a dart.
‘Akira. Can you hear me?’ Her mother’s voice echoed inside her head.
“Y-yeah . . . I can.”
‘We lost a few men . . . scratch that. We lost A LOT of men already. The tide of war’s on the side of those bastards. I don’t think we can survive at this rate.’
“What are we going to do?”
‘Alpha Adam, can you hear me? Alphas should be able to communicate with other alphas, especially since you’re an Alpha King.’
Adam nodded, his wolf head bobbing up and down before he swiped his paws and struck a man heading their way. Akira stood on guard and shot a dart towards a man lurking behind the trees.
‘Sure. I can.’
‘Good. Where are your men? If they don’t arrive soon, there’s a high chance we won’t come out of here alive.’
‘I’m not exactly sure . . . let’s try and hold out for a few more minutes. I’m sure they’ll be here soon.’
‘Damn! I knew that I should’ve gathered more men. Attacking so soon like this . . . it’s all because you got your damn selves kidnapped! Argh. What am I saying? I shouldn’t blame anyone. If I don’t manage to take back at least half of the men I brought here, I’m a total failure as an alpha.’
‘It’s alright. I promise.’ Adam sounded confident that Akira wasn’t able to trace an ounce of his usual playfulness. He sounded almost regal and leader-like. ‘Don’t get your knickers in a twist. I’ll protect everyone here the best of my abilities. The Alpha King is here personally fighting at your side. What’s there to go wrong?’
They were talking to each other while fighting at the same time. Akira didn’t know where they both get their calmness in this kind of situations, but it must be from experience. Both of them must already had come through a lot of battles.
‘He.’ Kathrynne’s chuckle echoed. ‘You sure know what to say, don’t you, you brat? Can’t believe I’m being comforted by someone practically twenty years or something my junior. No. Maybe that’s just ten. But who the hell cares. Back to battle. Don’t die, Adam. You still have to protect my daughter. Die, and I’ll personally bring you back to life before killing you again.’
‘I can see where you got your attitude, Akira. You and your mom are so scarily alike—both in appearance and speech.’ Adam said.
“What did your mother say, Akira?”
“It’s nothing big, Ann. It’s nothing you should worry about.”
She pouted. “I’m sure I can handle adult business now. I’m only fourteen but . . . it won’t be too long until I turn sixteen! But . . . I . . . er . . . I know . . . I . . . uh . . . I can . . . I can handle it! Yeah! That’s it! I can handle it!”
“Uh . . . sure . . . alright. Well, how do I put it?”
She flicked her wrist and struck a hunter on the leg.
“Well, a lot of people are dying . . .”
‘Yeah. Like that isn’t obvious.’ Adam said.
”Shut up, Adam!” She turned to Ann. “Simply put, we’re all dead if Adam’s reinforcements don’t come.”
Ann cringed and made an expression of shock and fear.
‘Way to scare the girl, Akira.’
“I DON’T KNOW HOW TO EXPLAIN THINGS SO DON’T BLAME ME! A-anyways . . . it’s not like . . . we can’t survive. Sure there are a lot of chances we can die but . . .”
Ann cowered even more.
Adam sighed. ‘I’ll explain. Listen here, Ann. It’s just like Akira said. But since I’m here, I won’t let any harm come to you, okay?”
Akira sighed. She had to admit she was feeling a bit nervous about things herself.
‘I thought you were good with kids, Akira. How can you not be gentler about it?’
“It’s . . .” She sighed once more.
‘You’re uneasy, too, aren’t you?’
“I . . . of course not!”
‘It’s okay. I’m here. Just like what I said before. I won’t let any harm come to you. You are my mate. I will protect you even if I have to die.’
For some reason, Akira felt like she was the child.
“Don’t die, idiot! Don’t make that kind of promise!” She exclaimed. “That . . . that won’t make me any feel better at all.”
‘Then, we’ll get out of here together. Is that alright?’
“Whatever you say.”
Once again, why was she acting this way?
-*-
Until next time, guys! Luv you all!
