20 facts about Utopia

1: I started the story with the ending. I only made minor changes like what she surrendered over at the beginning and the bullet wound.

2: This story WILL have a sequel (I planned this before even writing the first chapter of Utopia). It is currently out.

3: This story was inspired by the Walking Dead, The Last of Us, and I Am Legend.

4: The reason I didn't reveal the main character's name until the end was because of a story I read in Spanish class. It was called Vive y Muerte (life and death) and throughout the entire story, the main character's name was not revealed.

5: The name Ryseden came from my friend Shane. I asked him to give me a bunch of names for post-apocalyptic towns and then combined a couple.

6: The disease name KOMC really stood for "Killing Off My Characters".

7: I decided I wanted to write Utopia when I was close to finishing When I Find You. I thought to myself "I'm close to half way done with all my stories, posted or not. What will I do when I finish them? I need another story idea... Apocalypse."

8: Throughout my writing, I got multiple half kidding death threats from certain people -pointed look into crowd because you know who you are- because of me killing Alex. He was planned to die since the beginning. Alex was originally shot in the head.

9: My friend originally brought up trading something valuable for another thing at the trading center in order to make another chapter. I thought it would be even better for them to have had something valuable, but then had gotten rid of it.

10: Alex wasn't originally supposed to be bitten by a dog. It was another filler chapter that I asked a friend to throw out another idea. He just said "Rabid dogs" and things changed afterwards.

11: Jordyn was based off my friend Jordyn. Yes, I killed my friend. She killed me back in return so everything is okay. Her death was a lot more emotional than mine. I got shot in the head.

12: I wasn't sure to begin with if Alex was going to be a girl or boy companion (nor if there would be a romantic relationship), and so I picked the gender neutral name Alex and just decided to keep it.

13: Originally, I was going to touch base on a lot of other towns on the way, but I decided to just leave it as the story was.

14: The titles for the books are kind of backwards (Utopia being out in the dystopian environment and Dystopia being in a Utopia) but the names are more based on the progression and state of Sun's emotions. I have since changed the names and the second book is now called Neotopia instead.

15: I didn't have Sun's nickname until chapter 11 when Alex was trying to figure out a nickname for her.

16: Though it wasn't straight forward said, Alex did not call her Sun because of her "shining personality" as he explained in chapter 11 when he gave her her name. He really revealed the reason for giving her the name Sun in chapter 19 when he said "You're the light that guides me through this." Like the sun helps guide people in the day, Sun helped guide Alex.

17: There are more references in here than I care to admit. One would be the street name Jazbay after the alchemy ingredient in Skyrim.

18: Chapters 31-33 were written before chapters 27-30.

19: I had finished Chapter 10 and got it how I wanted it. When I was about to post it, I found out over half of it never got saved and I had to rewrite it. I was not a happy camper. That was the only chapter that had that happen though surprisingly.

20: Alex never learned what happened between Jordyn and Sun. You also never really found out what Jordyn whispered into Alex's ear.
