Chapter 8
7 months prior to start of apocalypse
"I feel bad for having Christmas without my parents. My mom really looks forward to seeing us around this time," she said, guilt coating her words. Sebastian smiled at her sympathetically.
"It'll be okay. After our Christmas, we can go visit them." She beamed gratefully at him.
"So, which of these should I open first?" His eyes lit up as he pulled out a present from under the tree.
"This one." She unwrapped the present with excitement. It was a brand new Xbox game that had came out within the last couple of weeks. She grinned widely at him, leaning over to hug him.
"I love it! Now open one of yours!" He shook his head, pushing another one of her presents towards her.
"I'll open them when you open all of your's." She sent her boyfriend an annoyed look before complying. The next present was thin and rectangular. Tearing into it, she was greeted with an old '62 Frank Sinatra record. She smiled at him.
"Thank you!" Recently, she had told Sebastian about the times her and her dad would listen to Frank Sinatra for hours on end. He handed her the next gift. This one was small and cylindrical. She once again open the present, to find a single mechanical pencil. She looked up at him, questions written all over her features.
"It's the pencil you let me borrowed last month." She chortled at his joke before shaking her head. He handed her one last gift which was soft and squishy under her grip. She opened it up, finding a soft, baby blue beanie.
"It's so pretty. Thank you for all of these," she told him, giving him a brief peck on the lips. He winked at her.
"Go try it on in the bathroom and come back out to show me." She did as he told, grabbing the scissors that they leave in the bathroom and cut off the price tag. She swung the beanie over her head, pulling it back slightly to rest in the middle of her tresses. She moved her long hair around, so smaller strands hung over the front of her shoulders. Content with how she looked, she marched happily back into the living room.
She froze, seeing Sebastian down on one knee. She took in his wavy, golden blond hair and gray eyes smiling behind his thick, black, rectangular glasses. He grinned up at her nervously as her hands found themselves slapping over her mouth.
"Will you marry me?" Her eyes watered. A small sniffle escaped her nose as she giggled.
"I'll have to think about it. You know, my dad doesn't seem to like you much," she teased, giving him a hard time. He stood up as she approached him. She wrapped her arms around his neck, her fingers lacing together in his hair.
"Of course I will," she whispered, her voice cracking with happiness. She snuggled into his chest, watching through teary eyes as he took her left hand. He plucked the ring from the box before sliding it onto her ring finger. It was a little big, but nothing a ring resize couldn't fix. Her fingers curled into a first as her thumb stroked the diamond set on top.
"Something new, something old, something borrowed, something blue," she muttered. "I should have known."
"I'm glad you didn't." He chuckled, squeezing her in his embrace for kissing her forehead.
