Reed
.
It was the weekend and I found myself preoccupied with my new laptop I recently purchased. I was making it all fancy, with choosing a nice picture to set as my background. I was browsing the pictures I had stored in a USB when I stumbled across a set of videos.
With giving it less thought, I played the first one.
I remembered the day as though it was yesterday. We, which included Karl, Jon and myself, decided to take our bikes out and go around the city. The days were longer and the nights were shorter and we made sure to take full advantage of both times. During the day, we would be biking, and at night, we would make our own fire and camp outside Jon's garden.
"You shouldn't do so many cartwheels. Especially near the fire." Karl mused out loud, tipping the rest of his Walkers packet down his throat. I could detect a hint of worry but Karl would still do anything to seem blasé and nonchalant in front of everyone.
"Stop being a chicken. You're almost rubbing off that cowardly trait on me." I said, looking over my shoulder and shooting my twin brother a smirk.
Jon caught my eye instead and he shook his head as a chuckle rumbled out of him.
We were surrounded around our makeshift fire, with snacks all around us and the moon hovering above us, providing us with sufficient light to see. It was a quiet night and it was fairly warm.
I did another cartwheel, this time, I quickly changed my position before landing so I ended up doing a hand stand.
I lifted up my head and nearly recoiled at the closeness of the fire. It was directly in front of me, the crispy smell and the crackling sounds it was making sounding taunting to my own ears. I felt the scorching heat claw at my face.
"Yo, shit, Reed!" Jon sputtered out and I heard him shoot up from his seat on the flat grass.
I felt his strong pair of hands grab my middle part and he quickly pulled me away from the fire, whilst I was still up in an handstand.
Karl was right in my face as soon as I planted my ass on the grass. "ARE YOU CRACKED IN THE HEAD?" Karl yelled, his face looming over mine and he was so close I had to physically lean my whole body backwards.
"Chill man." I said softly.
"CHILL?" Karl parroted loudly, his voice hinting the anger he was suppressing. Karl hardly got angry and when it did, it would usually be real ugly so he always tried his best to keep a lid on it; especially around me. "You could have burned half your face off."
"But I didn't!" I shot back and it was so the wrong thing to say.
A dark expression clouded over Karl's face.
"That's because Jon grabbed you before you could."
I looked over at Jon and he too looked slightly pissed at me. Regardless, I shot him my trademark smile. "Thanks for the save, hero."
Jon shook his head at me again, trying his best to hide the curve of his lips. "Anytime, damsel."
My heart fluttered as usual.
"Jon, fuck your ways." Karl growled quietly under his breath and I snapped my eyes back to Karl.
"What ways?" I asked.
"His heroic ways." Karl scoffed.
I frowned at my twin brother. "There's nothing wrong with Jon being heroic." I countered.
Karl crossed his hands across his chest and narrowed his eyes down at me. I felt annoyed and slightly intimated by the look he gave me but I made no move to show him anything he was doing was affecting me. "There is, when you become reliant on it."
Karl dropped his hands. "He won't always be there to save you, Reed."
I pressed play on the video since it was suddenly on pause. The video wasn't long, it lasted only twenty seconds but those twenty seconds hatched at every wound possible.
I was running around the makeshift fire just before I decided to take my aerobics to the ground. Jon was filming it and I kept pulling faces at him, at the camera and behind Karl's head.
But my eyes, right now, we're solemnly focused on my legs. I watched how freely they moved and how my feet never seemed to touch the ground before I was moving again. They were dancing. My vision started to get blurry just as the video ended.
"You had blue tips back then. It suits you."
I snapped my head back at the direction of the new, unwelcomed voice that came from my bedroom door.
Standing, with his tall six foot something glory and his glossy dark hair was Ghost. He had a black, tight thermal shirt on that clung to his physique, black fitted jeans and dark combat shoes. I almost had to wipe the drool that threatened to dribble down the side of my mouth.
I dared to glance down at my lousy attire, a flimsy old sweat shirt and my sweatpants. Now I wasn't any Kendall Jenner where I could pull off looking sexy in sweats. Nope. I looked as ragged as any individual could get. And my hair was a rats nest to add the cherry on top.
I clearly my mind of my poor appearance I focused on the real shit.
"What are you doing here?" I asked him slowly, surprised that I wasn't panting for him because it certainly felt like it was.
Ghost shrugged at me and pressed one shoulder against the side of my door. "Thought I could spend some time with my new friend."
I narrowed my eyes at him. "That sounds fake. I'm not your friend."
Ghost arched one eyebrow at me and he slowly stepped inside my room. "Then what are you?" He asked quietly, taking another step until he was fully inside my room, and instantly managing fill the whole room up. He lowered his head so it was on the same level as me. "Girlfriend?"
My mouth dropped open silly. "Err I'm totally not your girlfriend."
Ghost tilted his head to the side. "Why you making being my girlfriend sound like its the worst thing?" Ghost questioned.
I leaned back my head. "Because it is."
"You never even tried it."
"So? That still doesn't alter my judgement."
"I say you try it. It might actually alter your judgment."
My eyes widened to their maximum and I had pinch of fear that my eyeballs would pop out their sockets and roll right under my closet. "Please don't tell me you just asked if I could be your girlfriend." I said slowly, for my own benefit rather than his so my own mind could process what Ghost just said.
"I think I did." Ghost confirmed.
"You can't ask me that!" I sputtered out.
"Why not?" Ghost countered.
"Because that's wrong!"
Ghost frowned at me. "Why is that wrong?" He asked me and he made my outburst sound like it was stupid.
"Because you don't know me!"
"So?"
My mouth dropped open, a gasp escaping from it. "SO?!" I shrieked, utterly repulsed at whatever game Ghost was playing.
"Get out." I suddenly spat out, pointing a finger at the door that was shut behind him. Now how the hell did that happen?
"Who even let you in?" I asked him with a raise of my voice.
Ghost looked all in all, utterly and surprisingly unfazed by my reactions as he gave me a straight answer. "Karl did. He's gone now and he gave my strict orders not to leave you alone. Alas, I did have the same plan as I was walking up to your front door but to have your brothers approval kind of makes my... goal easier to accomplish."
"And what goal is that?"
Ghost straightened his back and then proceeded to walk around my spacious room. He didn't answer my question straight away but when he did, all sense was zapped out my head.
"To make you my girlfriend."
Oh my god. Was this guy serious?
"I think right about now would be real clever to do that clever disappearing trick and get out of my face."
Ghost was suddenly right in my face and with that I mean, he was right there. His hot, minty breath fanned my face and an involuntary shiver coursed through the back of my neck, shooting every hair up to their edge.
"I said do the trick and get out my face, not come in my face." I scoffed at him, surprised to find that my voice still held its game and that it didn't expose to Ghost how less of a game it actually was now.
"But I prefer to be in your face." Ghost causally replied back and I had this sudden unsettled feeling. Why was Ghost suddenly demanding to be my boyfriend? What was his ultra motive because surely, no man like Ghost would be wanting to date a girl like me.
So I asked him straight up with no ounce of sugarcoating.
"What's your ultra motive?"
Ghost looked taken aback by my question as he reared his head back so quickly that I actually ended up worrying that he snapped his neck.
"You did not just ask me that." Ghost growled in a low voice and I was so surprised at his reaction that I didn't know what to say. I instantly regretted asking that.
"Do you pity me? Do you think I'm some damsel that needs saving, and that you could do that if I did say yes to being your girlfriend - which by the way, I'll never be. I mean who even asks it like that?"
"Reed."
I held up my hand and quickly cut him short. "Do you want sex from me? Are you going to tell the whole school that you managed to sex the girl with no legs?"
"Reed."
"You just want to me lie flat on my back whilst you do your jazz? Because news flash, I have no freaking legs."
"REED." Ghost yelled, his face crunching up in anger and blood red rage.
"WHAT?" I yelled back.
"Shut up." He snarled past his teeth at me and he was still in my face, somehow amplifying the fear that started to peak around inside of me.
Oopsie.
"That's all bullshit and fuck no, I have no 'ultra' motive."
I could help raise one eyebrow of mine. "You sure about that? You should tell me now so I can hit you since you're too close in range - by the way, you're really in my personal space."
"What if I'm out of range? Can't hit me then?"
I gave him a flat look even though my insides were firing up and I was really not liking all of this. "I have no legs to get to you."
Ghost let out a murderous growl before I saw his massive hands clamp down on both of my legs.
"These are your legs." Ghost reminded me and I let out a miserable scoff.
"They aren't legs if they're no use to me."
"Stop saying that."
I shook my head at him. "No can do sir, I'm not dodging the truth."
"Your life isn't over just because you lost the use of your legs. You're still alive, you can feel, see, touch, taste. You still have a life and you should start appreciating it."
It stung. I'm not going to lie, those words actually stung but I knew best not to show Ghost. He was just a pesky boy who should really get out my house. I hardly knew him yet he was here demanding for shit.
But I had to have the last word.
I leaned forwards into his face. "Fuck you, Leo."
