9 Mortal Flash Fiction

This interview was hell. Why couldn't this news anchor stick to the usual questions?

"You're mortal. Nothing can change that, but what if you were not mortal? What would you be?"

Sometimes fame as a fantasy fiction author wasn't what it seemed to be. Awkward interviews were more often the norm than she cared to admit.

Anne chuckled, and hoped it came across as a sense of humor and not nerves.

"A dragon, I believe. Like the ones I write about. To have the freedom of flight, and the close bond of a rider I could respect? That would be the ultimate trade for me."

"I would have though something more exotic. Like a griffin."

"I'll give you that. I could be friends with a griffin, but I would be a dragon. A fire breathing beast ready to fight for the good of whichever world I inhabit."

"Thank you for your time Anne. You have enlightened me considerably as to the processes an author can use to keep everything straight in a mega series like yours."

She let her breath out in a silent careful sigh. The whole thing was a lie. Her world was born complete in her head the day she conceived her heroine. Nothing preplanned. Of course, no one could believe it was all in her head. Sometimes she couldn't either.

Which corner of that world would bring the next adventure?

She didn't know. She couldn't wait until the next time she cracked her knuckles before sitting down at her desk.
