Chapter 2 Betrayed

I jump off the bus and run into the school building. Race through my hallway and twist my locker combination open.
Grabbing my science book, I run towards Mr.Richards class and I make it before the bell rings.
When I sit down, the girl sitting in front of me: Winter, is whispering to Grace and points at me. I hear them giggle about something while we stand for the pledge of allegiance.
Class starts and once again I hear my name while I doodle on my paper.
Finally, after what seems like ages Mr.Richard calls them to his desk and they get a mark on there behavior cards. I watch them march back to their desks and Winter glares at me like it's my fault I exist.
When science is over I prepare for English at my locker, and Winter strolls up to me with her party of friends.
"So Levine, where did you get your shoes? The dump?" She flips her hair and smacks on her gum all sassy like while her friends laugh.
I was tempted to say, "Where'd you get your attitude? Your ....um" I hadn't quite figured out the last part so I didn't say anything.
After they left I saw Julia across the hall so I caught up to her and we walked to English together. We sat in the first row next to each other.
Today, Mrs.London gave us a test on vocabulary words. As usual I did very well. (Though I didn't study) Julia however, normally doesn't work well with words, she is more of a mathematics girl.
Next was lunch. Julia and I sat at our empty table again. I told her about Winter getting in trouble for whispering about me and how she rudely insulted me at my locker.
"At least she got in trouble." Julia said with a snort.
"Yeah it was pretty funny. You should have seen her face!" We laughed.
I noticed Julia glance towards a table behind us. I followed her gaze. It was Winter's table. She was the most popular girl in our grade. So of course, her table was filled with the coolest, cutest and most popular kids.
But why would Julia be looking over there? Sure, we had just talked about them, but she looked as if she wanted to be with them.
I tried to distract her with one of my famous jokes.
"What's an aliens favorite key on the keyboard? The space key!"
I'm not very great at jokes and it was the best I could come up with at the time.
She didn't really laugh she just kind of smiled and looked down at her burger. This was a bad sign.
Oh no! What if I lose her to the dark side?  No, that would never happen, she's your friend! Now, stop thinking like that Levine!
I begin to eat my taco and I see from the corner of my eye, Winter stands up from her seat.
No!
I began to panic. Staring at her beautiful clothes and her perfect skin, I realized she was coming towards me. just as as I feared she blew a bubble and picked it out of her mouth and stuck it to her jeans. It disgusted me so much I couldn't bear looking at her for any moment longer
I looked towards Julia as I chewed my taco. She was taking a bite out of her hamburger and hadn't noticed Winter, who was walking towards us.
Then the scariest thing happened. She sat down at our table next to Julia!
My eyes practically popped!
"So Julia, Grace and I were just talking about you." Julia swallowed and put down her burger.
Oh no! I thought. Is she making fun of her?
"We thought about what you said yesterday and we think your right about that skirt. Thanks for warning me. I can't believe I had almost worn that to gym."
"What?" I was so completely baffled I accidentally blurted out like a fool.
They both looked at me and Julia made a face saying: "Shut up!"
They ignored me, and Winter Continued her little chit-chat with my best friend.
"So, Grace and I wanted you to sit at our table. As like, our thanks to you."
Julia's mouth dropped. Then closed tightly.
"Okay, Levine and I will head right over as soon as I-" before she could finish, Winter interrupted.
"I'm sorry, but she can't sit with us. You see hon, she ruined my life almost completely."
My gut twisted with embarrassment as they stared at me. Julia had a look of shock on her face and Winter's was full of disgust and hatred.
"Excuse me?" I fumed. "I did not ruin your life. What did I even do? Did I breathe too loud for your perfect little reputation?"
By now, we were both leaning over the table.
"Levine, that's really mean." Who had said that? Julia. My best friend. The girl I shared my secrets and all my thoughts with. She betrayed me. She traded me for Winter.
I watched in horror as they both stood together and Julia carried her tray towards Winter's table. All of Winter's friends greeted Julia and she fit right in at that table.
My best friend only looked back when the whistle blew.
As I dumped my tray into the trash. I shed a small tear.
