Chapter 9: The Confrontation
The warehouse smelled of rust and gasoline, the kind of place where secrets rot. Seth moved through the shadows, gun drawn, every sense sharp. He'd been following a lead; a name whispered by an informant, a location scrawled on a napkin. He didn't expect the silence to feel this heavy.
Then came the voice.
"Looking for ghosts, Offman?"
Seth spun, but the blow landed first; a strike to the ribs that stole his breath. He staggered, his gun clattering to the floor. Figures emerged from the dark, masked and silent, their movements precise. Soldiers. Trained.
Seth fought, but they were faster. Stronger. A blade kissed his throat, and then the world tilted as they dragged him into the black.
The last thing he saw before the hood dropped was a man standing in the shadows, porcelain mask gleaming under a single hanging light. Cracked down the center like a broken smile.
Silas.
Jennifer sat at the edge of the couch, Amir pacing like a predator barely leashed.
Her phone buzzed.
Jennifer snatched it up, her heart raced when she saw the message. No number. Just a single image: Seth, bound to a chair, his head slumped forward, blood streaking his temple. Behind him, a mask gleamed under harsh light; porcelain, cracked down the center like a broken smile.
Then came the text.
"Midnight. The old opera house. Bring the Phantom... or watch him die."
Jennifer's stomach knotted. Her fingers trembled as she handed the phone to Amir. His jaw tightened, his eyes darkening like a storm swallowing the horizon.
"Silas," Amir said, his voice low, lethal. "He wants me."
Jennifer swallowed hard. "And Seth is the bait."
Amir's silence was louder than any truth. He turned away, his hands curling into fists, the muscles in his shoulders taut with rage. For a moment, Jennifer saw the man he used to be; the Phantom carved from shadows, the killer Silas made. And it terrified her... because part of her wanted him back.
"He thought he could take Silas on alone? Why didn't he stick to the plan?" Amir sighed
"Screw it, let's go," Amir said finally, his tone like steel. "But Jennifer-"
"No," she cut in, her voice trembling but fierce. "Don't tell me to stay behind. He's my friend. I'm coming."
Amir's gaze locked on hers, sharp enough to cut. "If you come, you don't leave my side."
Jennifer nodded. She looked down at the ring on her finger, its silver band gleaming under the dim light; now binding her to a choice she couldn't escape.
Outside, the city hummed with distant sirens, but inside, the clock was already ticking toward midnight.
The city was a labyrinth of rain-slick streets and fractured neon, every shadow a threat waiting to breathe. Jennifer gripped the dashboard as Amir drove like a man possessed, his hands steady on the wheel, his eyes locked on the horizon. Midnight was closing in, and the old opera house loomed like a ghost at the edge of memory.
Jennifer's phone lay between them, the image of Seth burned into its screen; bloodied, bound, and silent. She couldn't stop staring at it. Couldn't stop hearing his voice in her head, sharp and protective, the way it had been hours ago when he told her to stay close. Now he was the one who needed saving.
"Amir," she said softly, breaking the silence. "What happens when we get there?"
His jaw tightened, "We get him out."
"And Silas?" Her voice crackled despite her effort to keep it steady.
Amir's gaze flicked to her, dark and unyielding. "Silas doesn't leave that building."
Jennifer swallowed hard. "You mean-"
"I mean," Amir cut in, his tone like a blade, "if I don't kill him tonight, he'll never stop."
The words slammed into her like a storm. She wanted to argue, wanted to tell him he wasn't that man anymore, but the truth was a knife she couldn't dull. Silas had already taken too much. And Amir... Amir was bleeding for her, burning for her, and she didn't know if she could stop him from becoming the monster Silas wanted him to be.
The opera house rose ahead, its facade cracked and hollow, windows like blind eyes staring into the night. Amir killed the headlights and parked in the shadows. For a moment, they sat in silence, the weight of everything pressing down like a coffin lid.
Jennifer reached for his hand before she could think. His fingers curled around hers, warm and strong, and the contact was electric; dangerous and achingly familiar. He looked at her then, really looked, and for a heartbeat, the world narrowed to just them.
"Stay behind me," Amir said, his voice low, rough. "No matter what happens."
Jennifer nodded. She slipped the knife into her coat pocket and followed him into the dark.
Inside, the opera house was nothing but decay; velvet curtains rotting on the walls, chandeliers hanging like broken bones. The air smelled of dust and something sharper, something metallic. And somewhere in the shadows, a voice waited, smooth as silk and sharp as glass.
"Should have came alone son..."
Without warning, pyrotechnics flared from the stage edges. Smoke billowed. Silas vanished into it like a phantom. Jennifer shouted, "Split up!" and dove toward the control booth. Amir sprinted toward Seth, dodging falling debris as the rig began to lower.
Silas reappeared behind Amir, striking with a baton. Amir blocked, countered, and the two clashed in a brutal exchange; fists, knees, elbows. Silas was fast, but Amir was furious. The fight spilled into the orchestra pit, knocking over rusted instruments and sending echoes through the hall.
Jennifer jumped on the control panel, fingers flying. "I can stop the descent, but I need time!"
Silas threw Amir against a column and drew a blade. "Time's the one thing you don't have."
Amir tackled him before the blade could strike, and the two crashed through a trapdoor onto the lower stage. Jennifer screamed as sparks flew from the control panel. The countdown hit five minutes.
Silas kicked Amir away and climbed back up, blood dripping from his forehead. He grabbed a remote and pointed it at Jennifer.
"Kill him," he snarled, "or I drop Seth."
Jennifer froze. Amir, bruised and bleeding, pulled himself up behind Silas.
"Don't listen to him!" Amir shouted.
Silas pressed the button. The platform lurched. Seth screamed.
Jennifer fired; not at Silas, but at the rig's pulley system. The bullet ricocheted, snapping the wire. The platform stopped mid-drop, swaying dangerously.
Silas turned, enraged. "All I wanted was to write my wrongs between my son and Camila. You above all person should have remained at my side in all this!!Diego took her from us, I won't allow the likes of her to take you away from me too!!"
Jennifer charged, tackling him. The gun skidded across the stage. Amir grabbed it, aimed, but hesitated.
Silas laughed. "You won't do it."
Jennifer, panting, looked at Amir. "You don't have to."
" But you know you want to-
You still blame me for Camila's death even though Diego was the one who ended her life.
I haven't been the best dad but I've changed for you, for her!!! To rid this city of men like him and I know deep down you want that too.
So go ahead, kill me, kill your father and watch men like Diego go unpunished by this stupid justice system that men like Mr. Offman over here try desperately to uphold.
Or take that bullet and lodge it between the Mr. Offman's eyes and embrace what your sister deserves; true justice!!
Starting with these two."
Silas uttered
"You're right" Amir responded
Silas eyes gleamed
"This city has failed Camila and many more like her in their time of need. And I agree the justice system needs to change, but as much as how I want to justify her death; this is not the way.
Our constant killings despite how we might justify our causes that we're doing the right thing, it's not what Camila deserves and that's not who I am anymore.
This wasn't about justifying Camila's death; this was about your twisted conscience and the guilt you felt when you found out that she died.
But no matter the amount of bodies you drop, it won't fill the void inside that you cannot ignore the fact that through your erratic nature, you indirectly killed your only daughter.
I'm done!!"
Amir added as he tossed the pistol across the room.
Silas eyes twitched.
This face grew sour as he tries to resist the truth.
"This is all because of she isn't it!!
You wanted nothing but to slash the jugular of our next victim and now I can't get even recognize you anymore.
I thought I could bring you back into my embrace, it might not have been a warm one but it's the closest thing to family. But I see now, that that's not an option anymore.
So here's what's gonna happen, kill me or not, my mission will continue through the phantoms I have acquired, and they will infiltrate this city and even beyond its borders to ensure our mission continues.
As for you three, you might leave here alive but you'll forever be looking over your shoulder at the most inconvenient time when you believe we have forgotten, when you believe all is safe, when you believe we aren't watching; that's when we'll strike, not to kill but to make you suffer!!"
Silas lunged; but Jennifer struck him with a stage light, knocking him unconscious.
The countdown hit zero. Nothing happened.
Silence.
Jennifer collapsed beside Seth, tears streaking her soot-covered face.
Silas groaned, bleeding and broken.
"We should end this," Amir said, voice low. "He'll come back. He always does."
Jennifer stepped forward, placing a hand on Amir's arm. "If we kill him, we become him."
Seth scoffed. "You think mercy will stop him? He's a monster."
Jennifer turned to him. "So were you once. But you changed."
Seth's jaw clenched. "Because I had a choice."
"Please Seth, take him in."
"So you can finally clear the name of your beloved and move forward through the sunset?
Is that it?"
"No you little shit!!
If there's anything I know about Silas, he sticks to his word, and regardless of whether he's dead or rotting behind bars, those orders will be fulfilled one way other the other; but killing him guarantees that his orders will be expedited with full effect. We don't wanna take that risk as time is of the essence."
Amir shouted
Suddenly, Silas grabbed Jennifer's leg as he uttered from the ground-
"You took my son, changed his mind from his family, and I promise you I'll make it my mission to enforce the same upon you!!"
Jennifer trembled; her eyes welled up with tears.
"You get your filthy hands off her, she doesn't even has a child. Your threats won't save you." Amir uttered
"Noooo, but she longs for one. Isn't that right?
A normal life, kids running around the yard, and the joy on your face when they take their first steps.
You didn't tell him, did you?"
"She can't bear a child of her own."
Silas uttered to Amir
Amir looked at Jennifer in disbelief as she held her head down
"Then if you know this, why threaten her with children you know she can't produce?"
Seth questioned
"Oh, but she doesn't have to bear a child to be a mother, does she?
What was his name again...Ryan!!"
Jennifer lifted her head instantly
"Yeah, that little boy from the orphanage you can't stop watching.
I know you thought of adoption.
It would be a pity if any harm were to come to that poor innocent boy."
Seth couldn't take his yapping anymore; without hesitation, he took out his pistol and shot him between the eyes.
