Elements form into compounds by bonding together. For example, a sodium atom gives one of its electrons to a chlorine atom. The chlorine atom then becomes negatively charged while the sodium atom becomes positively  charged. Because they have different charges, they become attached. In this case, the compound it creates is table salt.

Why do they do this? An atom is unstable if it has less than eight electrons. So, to fix the problem, atoms bond together so they reach a stable-state of eight electrons.
