Chapter 1
Along the dusty roads of the city, a boy as a pedestrian was walking on the roads. He was accustomed to this daily afternoon stroll but today was somehow different. He was to leave the city forever and probably spend the rest of his life as a countryboy. He had been taken care of by his aunt till then but now he had no other choice but to stay with his granny who was a perfect stranger to him, and his aunt's words had created a more bad impression of his granny in his mind. His aunt had told him"I am taking up a new job away from here and with that in my hand I cannot take care of such an arrogant boy like you.I cannot stay at home ,so I am selling this house for good.Your granny is the only one who can knock some sense in your head through hard means. Such love and affection that you have got till now has made you enough spoilt." It was his last stroll that way. He looked up at the tall buildings with outstretched creepers. Cars roared past him like bees leaving behind thick puffs of smoke. He hadn't ever seen his granny or known her ever, so he didn't at all feel inclined to go to her place, but now he knew that he was not really wanted by his aunt then and as she perhaps thought him as a burden tagging along. He had no other relatives in the whole world,so he thought that he had to go on to where life took him too.Nobody wanted to be friends with him and there was nobody for his lone to be shared. He knew that his aunt made him work hard day and night and always had harsh words ready to shower upon him but still he loved her dearly and somehow felt secured with her so, he did what he was told to do without any disruptive arguments. The sky was blue and the sun was high up.Happy children rushed past him towards the park. The city was in a merry mood. "Benjy, is everything fine you do look really upset my child?",a woman's voice asked putting ahand om his shoulder. Benjy looked up. It was his neighbour Mrs. Mackenzie out for shopping."I am being sent to my granny in the countryside as my aunt has taken up such a job that she cannot keep the house and take care of me. I am going away by the 9:45 train all alone tonight", Benjy answered in a solemn voice. Mrs. Mackenzie looked down at Benjy and kept a moment's silence and then smiled and said,"Why be sad Benjy, you don't know how fun life in the country is.Exploring new things and being completely intermixed with the nature will be best for a growing boy like you , but yes I will really miss you so , much you are such a nice kid." But Benjy was not sure, he loved the city and the lifestyle he was leading there and he didn't want to leave it at any cost. He didn't at all what was all that fuss that Mrs. Mackenzie made about living in the countryside. He just managed to nod and then with a last pat from her, they both departed in different directions. He consoled himself by thinking that it didn't matter at all if he wasn't wanted anywhere in the world. He didn't understand his own feelings and the more he got submerged in them the more unhappiness and depression it brought to him.
The sun slanted down and long shadows creeped up around him. He had made his shadow his only companion along time back as that had been the only thing which had stood by him in all times of his sorrow and happiness and it had been that only entity who never grew tired of him. Life had to go on like this. He looked at his watch. It was 7:15pm. He had to be back by 7:30, so he took to his heels. He didn't want to be prey to any unwanted scoldings at the intense moment of his misery, so he wanted to be on time. The hustle-bustle of packing made the time fly away like seconds and in a few minutes he was standing on the platform by his aunt with a small leather suitcase at his feet. "Your granny will be at the station for you. She has a picture of you so it wouldn't be a great deal for her to identify you and don't you be a nuisance with her else she will not spare you." These words scared Benjy like anything, yes his granny must be worse. The train whistled and Benjy put his head out of the window to wave a last goodbye to his aunt. She was not there. She was gone. With tears in his eyes, Benjy bade farewell to the dimly-lighted station left far behind in the darkness of the night.
