Chapter 2

Slowly the light faded away with the darkness and Benjy settled down on his seat with a heavy heart. He wiped away his tears and stared at an old man sitting in front of him. He seemed to be asleep as he occasionally slouched forwards and then again backwards. Benjy closed his eyes hoping to find a way to escape from his own feelings. He fell inte deep sleep by the sound of the gentle chuffing of the train and the train continued its journey by the dark fields and the dimly lighted small villages where the night began in the evening and the day started in dawn.

Benjy opened his eyes. At first he didn't realise, where was he? Why did he feel his whole self moving? What was that thing that made him feel very gloomy and somehow heartbreaking. Then he remembered his sad memory and it seemed hard for him to believe his present not considering his future which was probably going to be worse. He ventured out of his seat to the train door. A fresh and chill wind was blowing as the train passed the faraway hillocks. It refreshed his face, his body but not his mind. The train was about to reach his station in about an hour. He retired to his seat and looked at the old man with beseeching eyes as he gorged upon a piece of bread, omelette and hot tea. Benjy remembered the days of the city. He knew that his aunt had always thought him a burden but he had  liked her company more than anything else in the world. After his parents she was the one who had taken care of him. His thoughts went on with the train.                                  The train was quite punctual. Benjy stood their on the small platform with his suitcase looking around for his granny. Nobody called out for him. Nobody looked around for him. Nobody waved at him. His arms ached as he carried the heavy suitcase and wandered about in the station. A chill ran down his spine, what would happen if nobody came just to leave him all alone stranded in an unknown countryside. Where was his granny?
Benjy sat on a nearby bench and saw his train rush past the station. It was a small sideway station and not more than two-three people got down there. Benjy felt and urge to get into that train again, before it left. His mind told him to board the train and find help in the next big city station, but his heart told him to stay on for some reason that he didn't know but could feel. Finally Benjy had to go with his heart. The train was gone.                Tears rolled down his cheeks and he felt drowsy. He looked down at the beggar boys. Would he be in such a state soon? He put the suitcase on the ground and laid himself on the bench. From far behind he heard a faint voice of his aunt calling to him,"Wake up Benjy it is morning, wake up." Then he saw a old lady take his hands, bring him home and treat him with all the love and care that he had been dying for all along. He was in deep sleep and lost in his own dreams.             When he woke up, he was suprised to find himself surrounded by a whole bunch of beggar boys. They were staring down at him as if he was a piece of the most interesting stuff in the whole world.                                          "Look he is wearing new clothes and still he behaves as if he is one of us", said a boy with a tuft of dirty hair covering his whole forehead.                    "Who are you all?"                                  "We are the Beggar Boy Gang, we rule this place", said another boy ruffling his dusty head. One of the bigger boys of the gang comforted Benjy to tell him how he was in that state. Benjy didn't know why but he felt a sense of warmth towards them. He told them that he was also like them an orphan boy unwanted in this world. They listened to Benjy with atmost concentration. They began to feel that Benjy was just like them- children who had no place in this wide and mordern world.
"Don't worry friend, you will now have our company. It will be fun."        Benjy agreed to stay with them till somebody came to look for him which he felt was next to impossible.               There were six of them- Peter, Jack, George, Tom, Dick and Benjy himself. Benjy soon found that he loved their company a lot. They roamed about aimlessly and for a moment he forgot all his sorrows and got interested in listening to how they had spent so many years in thal lonely countryside railway station.                                                The sun was about to set soon and the small countryside station grew more and more lonely as the population almost disappeared out of sight. Then the night succeeded.
