Talan's POV

My father asked me to be his regent, the Duke in training. I couldn't believe it, I was sure that he would continue ruling for the next two years but he was going to let me take over and then assume the Dukedom. I was honored that he thought I was ready.

The next day I practically leapt from my bed well before dawn broke and woke the servants to come wake me for my morning ride. I quickly dressed in a clean tunic and trousers and headed out to my families stables where my beloved horse, Archangelo was still asleep in his stall. I woke him and quickly brushed him and saddled him for our usual normal morning ride through my families land and the surrounding forests.

I loved this land, the trees, the grasses, the way the city looked like an heavenly city at dusk when the sinking sun was just setting feeling the sky with soft reds and oranges. Just heavenly.

I rode just feeling the gentle breeze blowing around be catching the trees making them dance a rhymatic and joyful dance. I leaned my head back and breathed. Peace. Riding every morning was what made me feel alive, after the hetic life at the palace with the servents and no space, being out here in nature alone was a breath of fresh air that I desperetly needed all the time. My mother worried about me being out alone with out my guards but I didn't and neither did my father, I think he understood why I had to do this. So the first time when ever I left to ride alone he would keep Mother calm and when I we would share a smile as my mother fretted over me and wouldn't let me go. She's not as bad now as she was but she still worries. I know she does.

I finished my ride and returned Archangelo to his stall, the sun had fully risen and the day begun. I had been on my ride for almost four hours. I brushed my horse, feed him, then set off to my fathers study to begin preparing for my ascension to the Dukedom. The walk was uneventful, hardly an servants passed me and if they did they would lower their heads submissively as a way of respect. No matter how many times I have tried to get them to stop they will always bow and dip their heads. A tradition I couldn't wait to be rid of as soon as I was Duke. As much as my father has made changes to the country it is still not enough in my eyes. There can always be improvements in education and stature. And I plan on making my mark on my country no matter who is against me.

I knocked gently on my father's door and entered after hearing his call to come in ready to begin my training.

Two hours later I was still in my father's office, reading. He had me reviewing all of the files and records of our City. When I accepted this offer I never expected to be reading, following my father on his day to day schedule, but reading work? No. But if I am to be the next Duke I must accept responsiblity and know my people, for a ruler is only as good for ever as long as he knows and respects his people. That's what my father always says, and he's right. If I don't know my people how am I expecting to protect them properly? So I kept reading even well after the words had begun to blur together and I could barley understand the script I was to be reading.

So far I had learned that the bakers had a fued with the cooblers because of a bad shoe that ended with the uncles' injury that put him out of work for a month. The carpenters and the shepards were disbuting over the fence that was just built that broke apart two weeks later. I sighed, so many problems how am I to keep the peace in Venice if the people can not even agree to get along with eachother?

But I would find a way, my father believed I could and I will not disapoint him.
