Chapter 23
Soon enough, everyone started leaving. Sarisk decided to wait until later to open his presents. They were cleaning up when Kaya saw her driver's ed human teacher standing at the entrance.
Wait, she thought. Isn't my test later? She hasn't gotten her driver's license because she thought she didn't need it since she could teleport from place to place. But getting it was mandatory for all and she was to take her driving test on Monday.
It is quite strange that she would come here, Lyra said. Go and see what she wants, I suppose.
Alright. She put the bag in the trash can and turned to walk up to her teacher, Ms. Maplewood. She looked back at the entrance and saw instead her grandfather walking up to her. Where did she go?! she thought in a hurry, her face showing no different emotion than before.
Calm down, Kaya. She probably walked away. It's not possible for humans to have magical abilities, let alone teleport.
"Do you need something, Grandpa Gaster?" she asked when he was near enough.
"I do, actually," he replied. "And quickly, before you and your mother go shopping for food for tomorrow, although I would love to have a taste of turkey after all those years."
"I forgot I need to help Mom out with that," Kaya whispered guiltily.
"Kaya!" Frisk shouted, which caused a moment of panic for her grandfather. "I'll wait for you at the store. I need to put Sarisk to bed."
"Alright, cya there!" she shouted back.
"Thank goodness," Gaster whispered, letting out a sigh of relief.
"So, will this be long?" she asked, crossing her arms tightly as a cold breeze blew by.
"Not long at all," he responded. "You just have to do something quick, give us the results, and be right on your way to the store."
"Wait, us? I'm guessing you and Dad?"
"Dr. Alphys reluctantly agreed as well, mainly because she didn't want to be outdone by Sans because of his high intelligence and only one HP."
"I didn't think she'd agree to... er... whatever you're doing."
"That answer will be answered when you see it. And we'll explain more in depth about it once there. Now, come on." He grabbed onto her shoulder and teleported the both of them to wherever this something was.
When they arrived, all around her was darkness until Gaster opened a door and light flooded into the room. The room they were in turned out to be a hallway, and it looked familiarly like the place her father had taken her when she had fallen ill.
"What's this room?" she asked as she peeked inside and looked around before entering. It was dark gray like the rest of the place and only consisted of a sort of counter with a small red tablet sitting on top.
"Just take the tablet," was her grandfather's only response before he closed the door on her.
"Ook then." She walked up to the counter and picked up the strange pill. It looked like any other pill she saw some people take, but she could feel a small bit of magic pulsing inside it.
"Use your skeletal form," Gaster's voice said through some hidden speakers. The unexpectedness was enough to do so, so she didn't worry about doing so.
"Don't need to tell me twice," she whispered and glanced around for some water. That's how normal people, or rather, humans, took theirs. "Alright, I'll just have to deal with taking it without." She rolled her eyes slightly, hoping not to show her embarrassment because she didn't know how to take one. She opened her mouth and gulped down the pill.
Nothing happened.
"Alright, so am I suppose to wait for the effects to kick in?" she asked after a long moment, half of her body lying on the counter. Or am I a test subject? she thought. No. Dad wouldn't agree to help with, whatever this is - I still don't know the point of all this - since I'm his only daughter and he loves us unconditionally.
"why isn't it working?" her father's voice said through the speakers. "i knew this was a bad idea! why did i agree to experiment on my daughter? what if i poisoned her? what if she can't take the amount of determination in that thing?!"
"Excuse me?!" she asked, now standing with her eye sockets now pitch black and an angry look on her face. "You were trying to find a safe way to inject DETERMINATION into someone? And you used me to find out?" she said furiously, figuring it out. She heard someone smack their skull, although she was sure it was the both of them.
"Y... you accidently turned it o-on," Alphys said. "I-I-I'll go f-fetch her! I'm sure nothing-"
"I'm perfectly fine," Kaya said, interrupting her. Her glowing eyes appeared back in her eye sockets. "Now if you don't mind, Mom's most likely waiting for me at the store, so I gotta go." With that, she teleported out of that place, which she assumed was some sort of old lab, and found herself at the entrance to the store, but not without hearing before she left, "I'm starting to think the tablet had no effect on her," from her grandfather.
The first thing she saw when she arrived was her mother's stern face. She didn't have a chance to speak before Frisk grabbed her by the arm and tugged her in the store and over to the food section.
"Do you know how long I was waiting?" she asked and continued without giving Kaya time to speak. "What was the favor you had to do for Gaster? Why did it take so long?"
"Did it really take that long?," she replied as they arrived. "I would've thought putting Sarisk to bed would take longer than me taking a pill. And I'm not so sure I completely understand what they're doing anyhow."
Her mother sighed. "Alright, I'm- wait. They're? And what pill?"
Why do I always do this to myself!? "I'll explain later," she replied quickly. "Can we focus on shopping first?"
"Fine. But I hope you're ready to stay up all night."
"Why? Does shopping usually take this long?" she teased.
"It is when you're with others."
"Wha-"
"Hellooo darlings~" Mettaton said, appearing around the corner.
"Have the others gotten everything?" Frisk asked.
"Yes, they're all over at the dressing rooms waiting for you two."
"Wait, who else is here?" Kaya asked.
"Oh, you know," he answered. "Undyne, Alphys, Toriel, Chara, your friend, Cypress' girlfriend, and the two girls from that 'adventurer' group."
"So why are we going to the dressing rooms?" she asked as they started walking towards the clothes section. "And why are you here if it sounds like a girl's night?!" More importantly, how did Alphys get here so quickly?
Maybe Sans teleported her here, Lyra answered. But even so, it seemed more like they would have had a long talk over what happened earlier.
Yeah. That's what makes me so confused. If she was a part of it, she would surely be with them to discuss the best plan of action for me.
The pill did nothing! Nothing changed with you; not HP, not ATK or DEF. Everything has stayed the same.
What did they expect to come out of this? she wondered as the small group reached the dressing rooms. If they planned to unleash it worldwide, then why experiment on me?! I'm a terrible test subject because I'm so unlike both humans and monsters.
"Now, you two stay here while I go pick out your outfits," Mettaton said and walked off to examine many various outfits.
"So that's why he's here."
"Yes, and I'm actually surprised that he hasn't yet picked one out for either of us," her mother replied curiously.
"You punks finally here?" came Undyne's voice from one of the rooms.
"Yeah, Undyne," Frisk said while Kaya went and lay herself across one of the nearby metal benches, letting out a little grunt.
"You are so much like your father," she heard her mother whisper while she gazed up at the lights, her mind elsewhere.
Why don't you tell him? Lyra asked after a moment, appearing on the floor behind the bench, her head resting on the top.
Do you think it's easy to just go up to someone and say I like you?! Kaya replied quickly, blushing.
Hmm, maybe not. But how would you know he likes you unless you tell him?
I... don't know. I guess I'm afraid to tell him, for fear that he might not like me back or...
He wouldn't be your friend anymore?
Yeah. He might not speak to me or text me if I told him and he doesn't like me back. I don't think I could continue speaking to him after I let him know my deepest secret.
"Kaya, dear~" her uncle said suddenly. She sat up instantly, her skull a bright purple and her eye sockets empty.
"Y-yes?" she asked, turning to him, her blush slightly subsiding and her white eyes appearing.
A dress was shoved into her face and she was pushed into one of the dressing rooms. "Try that on, will you? Then come out so I can see."
"Alright," she replied and turned into her human form. She started changing out of her normal clothes and occasionally stopped to listen to her uncle's chatter as the others started coming out to show their fashion expert.
"Ooh, that dress suits you so well, now how about... Hmm, not quite, try this while I look for a different one... What was I thinking? Sit here while I find the right one."
She zipped up the back zipper and looked at herself in the mirror. It was pretty, a black, laced dress that went down to her knees with the sleeves going just past her elbow.
She opened the door and came out, and saw her mother with her own dress on, a simple rose gold with designs of flowers over it.
"Oh, Kaya, my little flower," she said and came up and hugged her. "You look so beautiful."
"Oh, I knew I chose right when I picked it," a nearby Mettaton said. "That goes for you too, Frisk dear. Now to find you two some matching heels."
"Just none that are too high or with skinny supports."
"What's the matter, Mom?" Kaya asked, slightly teasing.
"I don't like those kind of heels you and Metta can handle. What's so wrong with that?"
"Nothing," she replied, letting go of the humorous manner that overtook her for that brief moment a second later, although she still had a slight smirk on her face.
They sat on the bench and tried on the various heels Mettaton brought to them, who was trying to see which would best match with their dresses.
"Harry?" Skyla asked suddenly, who was sitting beside her. She wearing a short purple dress with lacing bordering the neck and the entirety of the straps. Mettaton was lucky and had found a pair of heels that were exactly like Kaya's usual pair but black so it was matching her dress.
"Excuse me?" she asked, confused.
"Is his name Harry?" she replied. "Also, you look so kawaii in that dress."
Oh, she thought. So she's gonna try guessing now. And did she just call me 'kawaii'?
"Thanks, and no," she said.
"Gilbert?"
"No."
"Ben?"
"No."
"Ooh~ Are we guessing names over here?" Mettaton said, taking a seat beside Skyla.
"No!" Kaya said, blushing in her skeletal form with her empty eye sockets, while her friend said, "Yeah! I'm trying to figure out who Kaya likes."
"It's like-like isn't it?" he asked silkily, pointing a finger at her as though he already knew he guessed correctly. She face palmed as Skyla replied, "Yep. But she won't spill who it is."
"And I won't," Kaya said, looking out into the aisle, supporting her head with her hand.
"But why?" they both asked.
"Because someone will eventually let it slip out."
"But we will eventually get it."
"And, since you're using the term 'eventually', do you ever plan on telling him?" Mettaton asked.
"I..."
"If you don't tell this special someone in your life, you may never get your chance to do so. And better to let it out and have him either love you back or just be friends with you than have him like someone else without you telling him a single thing about it to him."
They were all quiet for some minutes, watching as the few others, Undyne, Jenny, and Toriel, were still going in and out of the rooms, Mettaton not quite finding the right dress for them. Frisk, Ali, Caitlin, and Alphys were chattering away, so they weren't paying any attention to Kaya, Skyla, and Mettaton.
"So," Skyla said, continuing the guessing game. "Carl?"
Kaya sighed. "No."
"Alex?"
"No."
"Alphanso~" Mettaton said, joining in.
"Gerald."
"Ceasar~"
"Jake."
"Leonardo~"
"Victor."
By now they were both just saying names off the top of their heads.
"Niko~"
"Mike."
"Can't you give us a hint, darling?"
"Nah, I think I'll just keep you two guessing," she replied.
"As soon as either of us find out, we tell the other, got it?" he whispered to Skyla.
"Yeah, don't worry," her friend responded. "I will if I find out."
Soon enough, everyone's dresses were picked out and they went on their way, with Mettaton joining them. He figured it would give a boost to his ratings if everyone saw him hanging with popular monsters and Frisk. He himself had chosen a black suit with a pink tie and a pair of black boots.
