Chapter 24

They all climbed into Mettaton's jet black limo, which was parked right outside. The inside was spacious, with plenty of places to sit on the pink cotton seats.

Kaya followed her mother into the limo, only to be stopped halfway through when a police siren sounded. She stood back from the door as Frisk got out to see what the commotion was about.

"It's coming right toward us," Jenny said, pointing toward the flashing red and blue lights. They all waited for the police car to stop behind the limo, but it turned out to not be the only vehicle to come up to them.

Suddenly, a microphone boomed from one of the black vans.

"Attention monster citizens! Please report to your area of the city and stay there until further notice! Any human citizens may ignore this message!"

"And what about me?!" Kaya shouted stepping forward.

There was silence for a few moments. "...Er, what do you mean by that, ma'am?"

"Oh, surely everyone knows the dangerous half-blood named Kaya Dreemurr?" she replied, crossing her arms.

Policemen came out of the police cars and S.W.A.T. soldiers surrounded them, emerging from the backs of the black vans. Kaya took a step back and felt the touch of her mother's hand on her shoulder. Her eye darted to Frisk's determined yet worried expression.

"Since when was I informed of all this?" her mother demanded. "All we were doing were going out on a little girls' night, despite Mettaton being here."
"Please, Mrs. Dreemurr," the speaker said. "Cooperate with us and things don't have to turn ugly."

"Oh, things are sure to get ugly if they keep pressuring us like this," Kaya hissed under her breath, her face veiled in darkness.

"Not the time, my little lilac," Frisk whispered to her. "Fine," she said louder, addressing the speaker. "My monster family will return to their area, but my daughter stays with me."

"Fine, just keep her by your side and approach the group in front of you. They will take you two to my van. The other humans, however, will be taken back to their homes."

"Alright then," Mettaton said, and Kaya turned to see him ushering the monsters of their company into his limo. "We'll see you later, Kaya and Frisk, dears~" With that he climbed in and the limo started up and drove away, a couple vans following them.

They watched the spot where the limo had disappeared from sight a moment longer before Kaya being dragged by her mother broke her own daze.

I understand I need to stay near you, Kaya thought. But being dragged behind you like I'm still a child is not something you need to do!

Oh, calm down, Lyra said. What's the worst that could come out of this small meeting?

Everything! And the worst will most certainly happen now that you've said that!

When has saying that outside of movies or fairytales ever made anything worse than it would be?

I can't wait to see your reaction when I'm right.

And I can't wait to see your reaction when you see your wrong.

They reached the van the speaker was in, and the leading policeman opened a side door and guestured them in. Kaya climbed in first and sat down on one of the seats lining the sides of the van. She watched her mother come in and sit next to her.

From the front, a man turned his chair to face them, and it turned out to be the mayor.

"Greetings, Frisk and Kaya Dreemurr," he said.

"Greetings, Mayor," Frisk replied. "Now, what's going on? How come I wasn't informed that monsters were to stay in their section for the night earlier?"

"I'm sorry for the inconvenience, and for my attendant for not saying a thing to you. As for what's going on, the humans are growing more afraid of monsters with the growing population of them, and because of... recent events." He glanced over at Kaya before returning his attention back to her mother. "The government decided to set in segregation laws. I hate to follow them, but I fear they may send the army and force it upon us if I do not. And I know how badly this will affect your son and my daughter, since they will no longer be able to see each other every other second of the day."

"If everything will be segregated, then where am I suppose to go and be?" Kaya spoke up. "I'm human and monster, so I need to learn about both. There are no others like me, so making a seperate class just for me won't be useful."

And it would definitely make me a much larger target back at the uni.

"I think I can make an exception for your family."

"And how are you going to tell all the humans that some monsters have been pardoned because their family with the ambassador? If anyone remembers the human's Civil War way back then, then they would know that before all African Americans were given freedom, white humans in the south hated the ones that were free up in the north and the ones that escaped from their own plantations! They did everything they could to make sure African Americans stayed as slaves! Won't the same thing happen if you pardon us from these new laws?"

"I...uh...haven't thought about all that. D-Don't worry. For the time being, you may stay with your family. I'll inform your university to excuse you from all studies."

"Wait, what? I'm not allowed to go to the university?"

"Yes. Like you said, you're half monster and half human. And with the segregation laws settling in, it would just be too confusing for you and the teachers."

"Alright, fine. I see where that could lead to."

"Good. Do you need a ride home?" he asked, changing the subject.

"That would be appreciated, Mayor," Frisk replied. "I think we both need some time to take all this in."

The mayor nodded and turned his chair back around and started up the van.

Frisk sighed. "I don't understand," she said after a few minutes of hearing the van move along the road, the sirens outside muffled. "What have monsters done to have these new laws accepted into society?"

"I don't know, Mom," Kaya answered. From her pocket, her phone buzzed, twice like a heartbeat. She looked at the notification and found it was a text from her father.

Sans: Hey lilac. How's everyone?

Kaya texted back to him.

Kaya: Everyone's heading home. We were stopped from going anywhere when the mayor came and told us about these new segregation laws

Sans: Segregation laws!? Are they trying to break up my family!?!?

Kaya: No, Dad. For the time being, we will stay in the monster section until all this somehow gets resolved

Sans: I guess that's good enough for now. Alright. See you two soon

Kaya: See ya

"Was that your father?" her mother asked.

"Yeah, he was just checking up on us," Kaya answered.

"Alright. I can see why he texted you instead of me. But I'm worried about what might become of our family if we were forced to live apart."

Kaya could see tears start to form in Frisk's brown eyes. She scooted closer to her and put her arms around her mother. She hugged back, crying into her shoulder.

"The best thing we can do is hope that it will turn out for the better," Kaya said, her voice cracking and tears appearing in her eye as she thought about the possibilities.

If there really is a God that these humans talk about, please let him be real. Please let things turn out nice.

...

Don't shatter our SOULS.
