Chapter 5

Mrs. Jones was speechless as he came in, wondering how he came here so quickly on such short notice, and sat in Kaya's seat before she had been moved to Ms. Toriel's lap. "so, where's my kiddo, miss?"

Toriel lifted her head and moved Kaya so she was more comfortable and out in the open. "She's right here, Sans." Ms. Toriel had been humming while the principal was on the phone, and Kaya felt a twinge of disappointment when she stopped.

She refused to look into her father's eyes, for fear that he would be mad at her. Her own had been tearing while she was being held by Ms. Toriel, but a sob had never escaped her. Curiosity got the better of her and she glanced over at him. He was wearing his usual: a blue hoodie with a white shirt underneath, black shorts, and slippers. What she had expected to be on his face didn't at the moment. His eyes were worried, but his cool, although somewhat permanent, grin said otherwise.

Sans met her eyes and then turned them back up to Ms. Toriel's. "here's some new clothes for 'er," he said as he passed the bag he was holding to her. Kaya was staring at her hands again, but glanced up in time to see her father's 'we'll talk about this later' expression and her currently non-existent heart dropped. "help 'er get changed and bring 'er back here. frisk's got a meetin' an' they both need to be there as well."

At this, Ms. Toriel jumped to her feet, forgetting Kaya and dropping her, and exclaimed, "How come I wasn't informed of this?!"

Kaya let her head dangle to the ground, her light brown tipped hair gathered on the floor right below here. She let out a sigh of relief, catching her breath after that short, frightful moment, and she only just heard the couple of gasps from Ms. Toriel and Mrs. Jones. But whether it was because of Ms. Toriel dropping her, or because of something else, she wasn't sure. Her father turned her upright, his left hand glowing light blue. Sweat gathered on his skull, from magic obviously, and his eyes darted between Toriel and Mrs. Jones.

"uh, i can explain-" he managed to get out before the two female adults let out their rage and surprise.

"You dare keep another secret from me, Sans?" Toriel boomed while the principal exclaimed, "Was that her SOUL!?"

Sans' eyes had gone dark. "um... y-yes and yes?" He replied hesitantly. They were both speechless after that.

"Is... something wrong with my SOUL?" Kaya asked.

"She has a human and a monster SOUL!?" Mrs. Jones exclaimed, tossing Kaya's worried question aside.

"y-yes," Sans replied. "did you not expect something like this could happen, tori?" he asked, looking towards Ms. Toriel. She only ever allowed Asgore, Sans, and her grandchildren to call her 'Tori'.

"I... uh... had considered something like this for a... fleeting moment," Toriel answered. "But I had assumed that it wouldn't happen, since monsters can't really live with determination in them."

At least my disaster has been forgotten for the moment, Kaya thought, rubbing a hand over her sleeve, occasionally getting her fingers caught in the tears. What Ms. Toriel said, though, made her think. The amalgamates were injected with determination right before their bodies had turned to dust, she thought. And they melted together with the other melting monsters. I was born with determination. But this doesn't answer the question: Will I melt because I'm half monster? Will my body be able to sustain my determination as I grow older?

"considering she hasn't melted, and it's been over nine years since they've been born, i would say that it won't happen," Sans said, interrupting Kaya's thoughts. "now, can ya ask him to get here? we need to leave pretty soon."

"Huh? Oh, of course. Hang on a moment," Mrs. Jones replied, stumbling for the phone.

"I'll handle Kaya," Ms. Toriel said and took her by the arm, not at all meaning to be a rough gesture but enough to get Kaya moving, as well as because she was young so she was short. Toriel led her to the bathroom and had her go into one of the open stalls, the bag in her hands. "Put your tattered clothes in the bag once you're done," she said.

Kaya peered into the bag and pulled out two separate outfits: a classic black dress with black dress shoes for the meeting and a lucky duplicate set of clothes and boots like the ones she was wearing now. So, I put the dress on now and put on the other set afterwards, she thought. This meeting must not be expected to be all that long then.

She changed into the dress, set her tattered clothes into the bag, and replaced the newer set into the bag on top of the tattered one. She exited the stall and handed the bag to Toriel, who was just coming back into the bathroom.

"Oh, child, you look so adorable," she said as she took Kaya by the hand and led her out and back to the principal's office. Cypress was already there, and, not surprisingly, Jenny was there as well. She's like a child and a parasite, sticking so close to my brother and acting so fearful, she thought. Both of them were already changed, using a different bathroom in another area of the school. From what she could tell, being popular meant being pretty, so in case she was faced with a special announcement, Jenny always had some sort of dress stored in her locker.

"She... wanted to come along," Cypress explained to her, while Jenny whispered, "How can any of you stand her?"

Although it was hard to hear what she said, since Cypress had spoken over her, it was clear that Kaya and Sans did. Kaya moved her head so it faced the wall, her eyes dark, and she knew her father's magical eye had appeared in his left eye socket. Unlike Kaya's, his was two colors, blue and yellow, instead of one color. Jenny ducked behind Cypress.

"your parents know where ya goin'?" Sans asked.

"Why? Are we going to be long?" she responded back.

Sans just shrugged, his eye going out and the white ones appearing, and ushered the children out, Toriel a step behind him.

"You sure you can take us all, Sans?" Toriel asked.

"yeah, don't worry 'bout it," he replied, winking. Kaya knew that he wanted and needed her to help teleport them. Teleporting a couple of other people besides oneself was really draining on both magic and energy. She nodded slightly and grabbed onto Cypress' and Jenny's shoulders; Sans grabbed onto Ms. Toriel's arm, since he and Frisk were among the shortest adults in the family, and Jenny's other shoulder.
