Chapter 6

It all happened in a moment, as Kaya expected it would. She couldn't afford to have any of the others ask questions that could put her in a bad situation, or ones that she couldn't answer, so she let go of their shoulders once they appeared at the meeting place, Sans' destination overwriting Kaya's since she didn't know where it was held. They were instantly greeted with a hug from their Uncle Papyrus, with Uncle Mettaton following right behind him.

"BROTHER! DREEMURRS!" Papyrus cried, lifting all but Ms. Toriel off their feet.

"Greetings darlings," Mettaton said.

"UM, BROTHER, WHO'S THE LITTLE HUMAN YOU BROUGHT WITH YOU?" her uncle asked, letting go and setting them down.

"she's a friend of cypress', pap," Sans replied, moving through the crowd to their table.

"OH," Papyrus said as they sat down. There was only one chair empty once they all had taken their seat, which Kaya guessed was her mom's. Besides Kaya, Cypress, Jenny, Sans, Papyrus, Mettaton, and Toriel, there was Asgore, Napstablook, Mettaton's cousin, Undyne, Alphys, Asriel, Toriel's and Asgore's child who was once a soulless flower, and Chara, once a murderous ghost and the first adopted/fallen child. Although Asriel and Chara look to be about the same age as Frisk, they are actually much older. Their bodies just stopped aging after they died. But they were brought back to life by means no one dared explain to her. Or just because they themselves didn't know.

"HUMAN!" Papyrus shouted, rising from his seat. "FROM THIS MOMENT ON, I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, WILL BE YOUR NEW, AND UNFORTUNATELY SECOND, FRIEND!" he declared.

"Um, it's fine, you don't have-" Jenny started to protest.

"NONSENSE. I INSIST."

"Yeah!" Undyne shouted. "Papyrus and I will teach you to cook!" Her eyes were shining until Alphys said, "Um, m-maybe its best t-to leave that to her p-parents. A-also, one, we can't a-afford to keep rebuilding the house every time you cook, and t-two, they're going to k-kick us out if you keep sh-shouting like that."

"They'll have to make me!" Undyne said, leaping out of her seat and stood on the table, her body in her practiced battle position, holding a light blue spear over her head.

"YOU HAVE MY SUPPORT, UNDYNE."

"P-please don't."

Kaya sighed, barely hearing their argument. At least Jenny doesn't have the guts to open her mouth.

"So how comfortable are you all with Kaya?" Jenny spoke up over Undyne's and Papyrus' shouting and the other's . As soon as I think it. How dare I jinx myself?

"What do you mean?" Asgore's deep voice could be heard clearly in the silence at their table.

"oh, hey! look at that. the meetin's startin'," Sans said, distracting everyone for the moment.

The lights went out and spotlights lit up the stage. The mayor walked up on stage.

"Greetings humans and monsters!" he boomed. He waited for on-going conversations to quiet down, which wasn't long, and continued. "Today marks the nineteenth anniversary since the monsters were freed. And it's my daughter's birthday, who happens to be here, today." The overhead spotlights moved to Jenny and everyone stared in surprise. The humans and monsters who knew this cheered and clapped for her, with everyone else quickly following suit. "Now," the mayor said after the cheering and clapping had settled down. "I shall let the human-monster ambassador, Frisk Dreemurr, give more information as to the party that will be going on for the anniversary."

He disappeared behind the curtains, with Kaya's mother to appear from there a couple seconds later.

"Hello everyone!" Frisk said, her voice echoing around the room. "This won't be a long speech. We are planning to give as much time as needed for you all to get ready on such short notice. As you know, there will be a party held later tonight, available for both adult humans and adult monsters. It won't be as big or grand a party as our large milestone parties, but everyone who worked so hard to put this together has done an excellent job none-the-less in my opinion."

Cheers sounded and she descended from the stage, taking her seat beside Sans.

"You did great, my child," Toriel said, with nods and murmurs of agreement. Waiters came around, putting food and drinks on the tables. Once everyone started eating and arguing peacefully again, Kaya teleported away from the table, appearing outside the entrance/exit doors. It was still raining out.

There'll still be time for school then, she thought relaying what her mother said. She leaned against the fence surrounding the deck, placing her arms on top. Why bring us here if the announcement was mainly for adults? she wondered.

"Kaya?" A voice said behind her, scaring her nearly to death. "Are you alright?"

"Uh, y-yeah," she stammered, taken by surprise, and turned around to face her mother.

Frisk laughed softly. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you." She glanced back inside...and down, her face suddenly going from kind and gentle to hard and slightly irritated. "Come on out already," she said to someone unknown and temporarily out of sight.

"What?! Why?" came the responding voice.

Ok, so that's Jenny. ...Waait. Is Mom trying to...

"Come out now or I'll force you."

Reluctantly, the figure of Cypress' new 'girlfriend' came out into the open. She hid behind Frisk's legs, only to be pulled out roughly by the arm and stood right in front of her instead. "Now," Kaya's mother said, her hands on Jenny's shoulders. "Tell us what is making you act so rude toward my daughter."

"She's a freak!"

"That's nothing new," Kaya responded dryly.

"I heard what they said in the principal's office," Jenny said, moving the conversation to Kaya only. "About your SOUL."

"What's that suppose to change? And why were you stalking me?"

"You could've hurt someone back in the cafeteria!" Jenny ignored the second question, although she clearly turned a slight red when she heard the accusation, and she was nearly shouting now.

"No, I couldn't and I wouldn't have. I had no intention of hurting anyone, so the only way for someone to get hurt is if they did something stupid."

"I don't care what you say! You monsters shouldn't have-" her mouth was only now covered with Frisk's hand.

"It's fine if you talk rudely about each other, but you may not talk about monsters in general. Understand?"

A nod made the hand draw back, and Jenny took her chance to continue speaking. "Why did you have to live?! Why couldn't you have melted like those 'amalgamates' they brought with them to the surface?"

"Oh, I don't know. But it would sure be better to live barely understanding the world around you, yet also completely understanding everything at the same time. It would be better than having to listen to everyday insults and jabs and gossips. But you wouldn't understand that now would you? Your life must be perfect, being popular and the mayor's daughter."

"It's not all that perfect. I get insulted, too. Being the mayor's daughter means that I'm a big target for gossip because of my high status in the world."

"You got insulted. You were a big target. You're not targeted anymore. You're not called a freak almost every time you're greeted by someone. You don't have to live with all that gossip now, since it has moved on to me. You aren't half and half of two species. You don't need to question yourself about what you are suppose to be. You get to live knowing you've found out all of your talents. There are so many things that I have to learn. How monsters work, how humans work, practicing magical and physical attacks. Keeping all you know a secret from everyone because it doesn't help nothing."

"And how long have you been teased?"

"Let's see here." Kaya said, lifting her hand up to her chin and her eyes, on the verge of tears, looking up at the clouds, pretending to think. By now she had changed into her skeletal form. Her purple, magical eye had appeared in her left eye socket when the argument had started to get heated, and it blazed now; the white one in the right eye socket gradually growing dimmer during their conversation. "Oh, yes. It was my first day of school, and instantly there was a SOUL check at the main office. I had to skip it because of how my SOUL is. Hearing those young, immature, and simple teases tore at me deeper than it should've, being as young, but as smart, as I was. I knew more than I let on. I learned faster than any other student. Teachers and other students don't ever notice that because they can't get past the fact that I'm a freak, a hybrid, and, like I said, them knowing what my SOUL looks like and knowing how smart I really am won't change a fact except make everything worse."

At this, both Jenny and Kaya's mother were speechless, their mouths slightly open.

Oops. I guess I let on too much than I was suppose to. Kaya shook her head and looked away, listening to the soft pitter-patter of the rain hitting the ground.

The door opened a few moments later and out appeared a partial bit of Mettaton. "Excuse me, Frisk darling, but you're needed back inside."

"I'll be in there in a minute," Frisk responded.

"Alright. Papy dear, your brother is right! Stop going around trying to be everyone's friend in a minute!"

"THEN I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, SHALL DO IT TO PROVE YOU ALL WRONG!" came his reply.

"Do it, Papyrus! Or else all our training sessions would've been for nothing!" Undyne shouted.

"WHO WANTS TO COME TO MY HOUSE AND COOK WITH ME?!"

"Ok, it does sound like I'm needed in there," Kaya's mom said after the door had closed once again. "Alright, this dispute seems to be settled, so I'll have Sans take you back to school." She shot Kaya the look her father had given her earlier back at school. She squirmed slightly under her mother's stern gaze and only stopped once she had gone back inside to settle Uncle Papyrus down.
