Chapter 26.
It was the end of the day and I was dragging Luke behind me as I walked down the hallway, out the school doors. I had seemed to grow even more attached to Luke these past few days after what he told me at my house last week. I was scared, to say the least. I wanted to be with Luke all the time and make sure that he was okay, that he felt needed by someone. And that he knew how much he really mattered to me.
"Can you please stop dragging me around like I'm some pet? You might as well get a leash for me." Luke groaned from behind me.
"I'm not trying to." I shrugged. I stopped walking and turned around to face him.
"I'm still perfectly capable of walking on my own." He snapped. I didn't see why he was so upset, I wasn't even pulling him that hard. He was freaking out over nothing.
"Yeah, I know." I snapped back. "I was holding your hand, I don't have to if it's that much of a problem."
"You have a surprisingly strong grip, Stel. It hurts." Luke chuckled, looking down at my hand that was clutching onto his wrist more than his hand.
"I-"
"Whatever, it's fine." Luke sighed.
"Are you okay?" I asked. Luke sighed once more, glancing down at the ground.
I wanted so desperately for Luke to return to his normal self again, for him to snap out of this funk he was in. I wouldn't even care if he started being rude to me again, anything but how he was acting now. It hurt seeing him hurt, to put it bluntly.
"I'm trying to be." Luke's eyes met mine again. His hands were shaking, and I wasn't sure if it was from the cold or how nervous all of this made him.
"Luke, please." I said, my voice coming out as more of a whisper than anything. Luke bit his lip and looked around us, watching people pass by while we stood still, in our own little world. He groaned and ran both of his shaking hands through his hair.
"Let's go." Luke turned me around abruptly, pulling me in the opposite direction we needed to go in.
"Go where? I thought we were going back to my house?" I questioned, this time it was Luke dragging me down the street.
"Change of plans." Luke called back to me.
His actions surprised me, these past few days Luke had seemed to become very distant. He never talked unless he absolutely needed to, he ate even less than normal, it was like he wasn't even there anymore. I knew he was getting worse, no matter how hard he was trying to make himself better again. To see Luke acting like this, almost...normal, was great. He had seemed to switch right back to normal like it was nothing, I wasn't about to do anything to stop it.
Luke stopped walking and looked back at me, almost like he was asking for my permission to continue walking. Even though I had no idea what Luke had up his sleeve, I was going to let him take me where he wanted to go.
"Well, where are we going?" I asked. He held his hand out to me and I took it, lacing our fingers together.
"On our second date." Luke smiled softly at me, his grip on my fingers tightening.
We arrived at the movie theater a little while later, the last place I expected Luke to take me. We had talked in the past about how movies made bad dates and I knew Luke was too smart to just totally forget that. Luke knew me too well to take me on a date that he knew I didn't want to go on. He had something else planned, I knew that.
"Hey, Cal!" Luke called as we walked into the theater. Calum was behind the counter like always, it seemed like he was constantly working.
"What are you doing here?" Calum laughed at Luke as he climbed over the counter and started searching through drawers under the cash registers. "You're off duty, you can't be back there."
Luke picked up a spare name tag that was lying out on the counter and pinned it onto his shirt. It said Bill, but I guess Luke didn't care. "Now I can."
"What are you really doing here?" Calum asked. He looked at me as if I would give him an answer but I only shrugged, not knowing what we were doing either.
"I'm on a date, actually." Luke pointed to me.
"Oh, hey Stella - You're on a date with Stella?" Calum gasped, looking at Luke like he was offended that he hadn't been told about this earlier.
"Got it." Luke muttered under his breath, pulling something out of one of the drawers. "Yes, I'm on a date with Stella. Have you been living under a rock?"
"What? I - no?" Calum laughed again, clearly confused about all of this.
"I only talk about how much I like her all the time." Luke winked at me. He hopped over the counter again and rushed over to me, sliding a little on the floor that was wet from the snow on our shoes.
"I thought you had a boyfriend." Calum nodded at me, still looking confused.
"He's an asshole!" Luke yelled. He grabbed my hand and began to pull me away from Calum. "Theater 6 is closed!"
"What? No it's not!" Calum yelled back.
"It is now!" Luke laughed, running ahead and leaving Calum behind us. "We'll be out in a couple hours!"
"What are we doing?" I asked a Luke lead me into a theater. He closed the door and locked it behind him, using the key that he had been searching for in the drawers a few seconds earlier.
"This," Luke said, leading me up the rows of seats until he found the perfect spot. "is our second date."
"This is a dark movie theater, Bill." I laughed, calling him by the name on the name tag he stole. Luke didn't find it amusing, though, he stood in front of me with his arms crossed. After a few more seconds of staring me down he turned away from me, holding up one finger to signal that he would be back in a minute.
The movie screen in front of me flashed on after a second and I heard a loud bang above me, and some muffled shouts from Luke. He came back a minute later with something that look like a remote in his hands and sat down next to me.
"Are you serious?" I raised an eyebrow at him, already having an idea of what he was doing.
"You said that our next date should just be us watching a couple Disney movies." Luke looked at me, a big grin on his face.
"What are we watching, then?" I asked, my lips finally breaking into a full smile.
"Don't laugh." Luke's face became serious. "It's one of my favorite movies right now."
"I won't laugh, just tell me." I promised, already starting to laugh at him.
"Frozen." Luke mumbled. He hid his face from me in his hands, ashamed to even look in my direction.
"Frozen? Are you serious?" I laughed loud than I expected to, grabbing Luke's hand and tearing it away from his face, forcing him to look at me.
"You said you wouldn't laugh!" Luke shouted, standing up.
"I'm not laughing." I said, clapping my hands over my mouth to stop myself from laughing even harder.
"It's a good movie!" Luke whined. He returned to his seat, fidgeting around until he made himself comfortable by resting his head on my shoulder. I looked over and saw that he had his legs up on the seat next to him, stretching out like this movie theater was his own home. I guess he might as well use it to his advantage since we were in here all alone.
"Oh Bill, you're such a big softie." I giggled, looking down at Luke.
"I'd rather that you call me Lucas. Bill sounds like the name of an old man." He flashed me a smile before leaning up slightly and pressing his lips to mine.
It was the first time we had kissed in what seemed like forever. His lips felt soft against mine, an almost new experience. With Luke being upset the past few days he never even wanted to do anything, much less sit around and kiss me. Something happened today that snapped him out of this, something made him totally change his mood. I didn't even have much time to kiss him back, though, because Luke was already pulling away.
"Be quiet, the movie's starting." He whispered.
-
"That was the best second date I've ever been on." I admitted to Luke as he and I walked out of the movie theater, hand in hand.
"Then I bet you can't wait until our 6th date." Luke glanced at me from the side, a big smirk on his face.
"You already have that planned?" I gasped.
"No, I don't." Luke laughed.
"Well, I was just wondering. It seems like you have a plan for everything." I rolled my eyes.
"Yeah, plans are good. It's nice to know exactly what's going to happen all the time." Luke shrugged.
"Sometimes being surprised is nice too." I countered. Luke grabbed my hand in his and laced our fingers together.
"I like surprising people, not being surprised." He smirked, pulling me closer to him.
"You're so weird."
We walked in silence for a few minutes after that. But it was a comfortable silence, like it always was. I didn't care that we weren't talking, I was just glad that Luke was finally feeling better.
"How do you do it, Stella Anne?" Luke asked, completely out of no where. He continued walking fast, swinging our hands back and forth as I tried to keep up with him.
"How do I do what, Lucas Robert?" I asked. He groaned at the sound of me calling him by that name again.
"You...this. You just come into my life and you switched around everything. I had so many other plans for myself before you came along, and now I don't want to carry out any of them. You made everything so different, and I have no idea how. You're just a girl, you aren't supposed to do things like this." Luke looked into my eyes, his lips set in a straight line. He seemed so confused that I was able to have so big of an affect on him, like nothing like this had ever happened to him before.
"What are you trying to say?" I question, raising an eyebrow. I knew what I wanted to say right then, but I stayed silent.
"You just make me so happy." Luke said, his lips curling up at the corners into a big smile.
"Well then it makes me happy that I make you happy." I laughed lightly, knowing that my whole sentence sounded confusing.
"I just... I really - " Luke shut his mouth quickly. He looked down at the ground and coughed, then looked at me again. "I really need something to eat. I'm starving."
"Oh." I said, slightly disappointed with how that turned out. I had been expecting much more from Luke, since he built that whole thing up like that.
"Can we go get hot dogs?" Luke said suddenly, startling both of us. Luke was always so stubborn about eating meat, and here he was asking me to go get a hot dog.
"What did you just say?" I asked. Luke stopped walking, his face forming into a slight scowl.
"I want a hot dog, Stel. I need a hot dog."
"Um, okay. We can find a place that sells hot dogs." I nodded. I grabbed Luke's hand in mine again and began walking down the street in the opposite direction.
10 minutes later we found a hot dog stand on the corner of the street and Luke got his hot dog. I got one too, but I wanted to watch Luke as he ate his before I started mine. It sounded creepy, but the idea of Luke eating meat just made everything seem so strange.
"What are you staring at?" Luke questioned, pausing before he took his first bite.
"What? Nothing. I'm just waiting for you to take your first bite." I laughed.
"What's the big deal?" Luke asked, "It's just a hot dog. I've had them before."
"You told me you didn't eat meat, what made you decide to want it?" Luke took the hot dog away from his face and turned to me. I took a bite of my own and looked up at him, seating his answer. He had a blank expression on his face again, the same face that I had become so used to.
"You."
"That is the weirdest thing anyone has ever said to me." I took a step back from Luke, who finally decided to take a bite of the hot dog.
"Don't even ask." Luke rolled his eyes, his mouth full. "I'll have to tell you another time."
"How is it?" I asked, deciding to ignore Luke.
"It tastes the same as I remember." Luke shrugged. He took another couple bites and I finished my hot dog before I spoke again.
"Really? That's it? You don't eat meat for years and then you finally have a hot dog and you don't have anything to say?" I groaned.
"It's not even real meat, if I really wanted to have some meat I would go order a steak." Luke let out a loud laugh.
"You're such a dork." I laughed as well, playfully hitting Luke's arm.
"It was good, I don't think I'll be eating meat again for a little while. I just got in a mood." Luke shrugged again. He finished his hot dog and threw our wrappers in a garbage can as we passed by it.
"You're crazy." I laughed. Luke groaned and wrapped an arm around my waist, pulling me into him. He kissed my temple quickly and chuckled softly.
"I'm crazy, I'm a dork, you called me a big softie earlier, any other insults?" Luke stopped walking and grabbed my shoulders, turning me around so I was facing him.
"I'm not insulting you!" I protested. I stomped my foot on the ground and tilted my head to look up at Luke, who seemed like he was 10 feet tall compared to me. "And I called Bill a big softie, not Lucas."
"Oh, really?" Luke smirked, leaning in closer.
"Yes, really! Calling you a dork isn't an insult. I like how dorky you are." I stood up on my tip toes and wrapped my arms around Luke's neck, as he moved his hands down to my waist, pulling me up against him.
"I would totally kiss you right now if my breath didn't smell like hot dog." Luke smiled, taking his lip ring in between his teeth and playing around with it.
"Again, you're such a dork." I laughed, throwing my head back.
"Alright, let's do this." Luke shrugged, closing the gap between us and finally pressing his lips to mine.
