Chapter 31.

"Stella? Stella?" Michael called, waving a hand in front of my face.

"What?" I said, looking up. But I already knew what he was going to say to me. I was spacing out, again. I had been like that all day. I was just so excited, Luke was coming back home today.

We were in our last class of the day right now, which also happened to be geometry. Michael and I were pretty hopeless in that class, so usually he tried to goof off a little to pass the time. Thankfully we didn't even have to do any work today because we had a substitute teacher, I could sit and stare off into space as much as I pleased.

"I was just trying to tell you a story but you even weren't listening." Michael pouted.

"I'm sorry, I've just been really distracted all day." I sighed.

"Right." Michael rolled his eyes. "What time is Luke coming back?"

"Not until later tonight, I might not even see him until tomorrow." I said, repeating what Luke had told me over the phone last night. He was having a good time in California, and after the few days that he spent there I could tell that was definitely where he wanted to go for college.

"What if he ends up graduating at the end of this year and then he goes off to college while we're still stuck here?" Michael asked, which only made a nervous feeling appear in my stomach.

"We'll make it work." I shrugged, trying to stay as calm as possible.

"There are lots of other girls in California, and lots of other boys in New York." Michael shrugged as well. I could tell he was just trying to get me to see all the possibilities in this situation, but it was only making me feel worse.

"We'll make it work." I repeated, a little harsher this time.

"Do you really love him?" Michael asked suddenly.

"Yeah, why?" I questioned.

"Nothing, it just seems like it kind of happened fast. One minute you were telling me that he probably hated you because of what you did and the next minute I could hear you guys having sex above me." Michael explained, and I could feel myself blushing at the mention of Luke and I having sex.

"Well, I loved him before that." I said, to but it bluntly.

"Did you?" Michael raised an eyebrow. "Because I'm pretty sure a few months ago you were convinced that you loved Ashton."

"And look where that got us, he cheated on me." I laughed, rolling my eyes.

"With Luke's ex-girlfriend." Michael added, and I wanted to punch him. I would rather not be reminded of this whole thing right now, but I guess that's what you get with Michael. He really didn't have a filter.

"With Luke's ex-girlfriend!" I repeated.

"And I know all about him hitting you, Stella." Michael said, his voice becoming more serious.

"How?" I asked.

"Well, I guess Luke told Calum and then Calum told me." Michael shrugged. "It's not really a big deal now but it was a pretty big deal when it happened. You should have told someone."

"I broke up with him the next time I saw him." I said quickly, trying to make up for the fact that I hadn't ever told anyone else that Ashton slapped me.

"It's pretty serious, Stella. Boyfriends aren't supposed to hit their girlfriends." Michael looked concerned, and I was thankful that he cared so much about me.

"I know, and that's why I ended things with him. And Luke would never hit me, no matter how mad at me he gets." I said, hoping that I was speaking the truth.

"He better not." Michael chuckled. I knew he was going to say something about beating Luke up if he ever did hurt me in any way, even though Michael was kind of a wimp. If he was going into a fight with Luke he would never make it.

"You've been talking to Calum?" I asked, going back to what Michael said before.

"Yeah, he's awesome. I think I'm in love." Michael said, looking proud of himself. "I mean, in a friend way, not a Stella and Luke way."

"A Stella and Luke way?" I questioned.

"Actually," Michael continued, "Scratch that. You guys have a weird kind of love, I don't want that."

"Hey!" I protested, but it was true. I don't think anyone else could compare their love to the relationship Luke and I had.

"Anyway, I love Calum. He always lets me sit with him while he's at work." Michael said, a big grin taking over his face.

"Aw, you have a little man crush on him!" I laughed.

"I do not!" Michael whined.

The bell rang throughout the school, dismissing us from our last class of the day. Michael and I parted ways to get to our lockers, promising that we would meet each other at the front of the school to walk home. As soon as Michael left me, I felt a vibrating in my pocket. I pulled out my phone and checked the number that was calling. It was blocked, but I answered anyway.

"Hello?" I asked, dodging a freshman as they ran past me.

"Stella Anne, why are you answering your phone during class?" Luke's voice rang throughout the phone, and I tried hard not to squeal in his ear.

"It's the end of the day, class is over." I said, assuming that Luke was still in California and was a little confused about the time difference.

"Huh. Well, I have something to tell you." Luke said, sounding disappointed.

"What is it?" I groaned, already having a guess at what was coming.

"I'm staying in California for another week." He sighed.

"Why?" I asked, trying not to let him hear how upset I was.

"There's a couple more colleges I need to look at and some people I need to speak with about scholarships and all that, I'm sorry Stel." Luke said.

I couldn't be mad at him for this, because I was exactly what he wanted. He wanted to get out of New York and away from all of his problems here, and going to college may be his only chance to do that. I couldn't be upset at Luke for doing something that he really wanted.

"No, it's fine, I - " I accidentally ran into someone as I reached my locker, and I looked up from my phone to apologize.

I was met with a pair of very familiar blue eyes and that smile that I loved, which made me almost drop my phone because I was so startled.

"Just kidding!" Luke laughed, immediately pulling me into his arms and lifting me up, spinning us around in the hallway.

"You're such a jerk! I thought you were actually staying for another week!" I said as Luke put my back down, playfully slapping him on the chest.

"I'm sorry, I was just trying to mess around with you!" Luke apologized, not able to hold back his laughter.

"Jesus, Luke." I muttered, and we both laughed at the fact that I was using Luke's little catchphrase.

"I love you." Luke said, leaning down and placing a short kiss on my neck. "I missed you." He chuckled, kissing me again. With his lips still pressed to my neck, he mumbled, "We should go home because I really want to - "

"Luke!" I gasped, knowing what he was going to say next. I pushed him away from me as I began to get my things out of my locker.

"Can we go then?" He asked, his eyebrows raised.

"Go where?" I questioned, slamming my locker shut. Luke took my backpack from me as I put on my coat, refusing to let my carry it any longer.

"My treehouse!"

-

"So Michael's in love with Calum?" Luke laughed, his fingers slowly trailing up my arm.

"Pretty much. I guess they hang out a lot now." I smirked, rolling over to face Luke again. We were laying on the mattress in Luke's treehouse, a place that I had surprising missed for the past couple months.

"We're both being replaced." Luke said, his lips forming into a small pout.

"Well we kind of replaced them first, don't you think?" I asked, sitting up.

"I mean, yeah. But...does it matter?" Luke laughed.

"Not really, at least they have each other." I joked, shrugging. I crawled on top of Luke, putting a leg on either side of his body so I was now straddling him.

Luke grabbed both of my hands, lacing our fingers together. He pulled me down, gently connecting our lips again. The kiss was slow at first, but it eventually grew more heated and before we could get too carried away I pulled myself off of him, but not before biting down softly on Luke's bottom lip, making him moan softly.

"Oh, God I've missed this." Luke groaned.

"You still haven't told me much about your trip." I said, sitting up but still holding onto Luke's hands.

"It was great, all of the colleges I visited we really cool, I really liked UCLA." Luke nodded, "But California is really far away."

"I've you want to go then you should just do it. Don't worry about me." I smiled, trying not to let Luke know how worried I would be if he actually left.

"I also had to talk to all of these..councilors, I guess, about some of the stuff I've been through in the past few months. And we had to talk to a therapist out there, since I'll obviously still need the therapy." Luke explained, rolling his eyes. "And all the adults out there are saying I shouldn't drink anymore, because if I over do it and end up in the hospital again no college is going to want to accept me, especially since I'm so young. The therapist said it would be good it I gave up alcohol too, something about cleansing out my system. She seemed kind of weird and...religious."

"Well, that's a lot to be worried about." I said, taking in all that Luke had just told me.

"Yeah, I know Stel. But that's the thing, I really want to go. I want a fresh start, and moving across the country may just be the best way for me to do that." Luke sighed.

"But you won't even know if you're going until they confirm that you're graduating early, right?" I asked. Part of me secretly hoped that Luke wasn't going to be leaving a year early, then things may be easier because we could both leave for college at the same time. But I knew that was selfish, I should want what's best for Luke.

"Yeah, I should actually be getting a letter about it within the next couple weeks." Luke swallowed hard.

"So if you get accepted into a college out there and you graduate earlier then..that's it? You're going to leave?" I climbed off of Luke and laid down on the mattress next to him again, letting him wrap an arm around me and pull me close.

"Maybe. There's one or two things holding me back." Luke bit his lip, taking his lip ring in between his teeth.

"Please don't tell me I'm one of those things." I sighed. As much as I wanted Luke to stay with me I didn't want to hold him back, I would hate to be the reason why he missed out on an opportunity like this.

"But you are, Stella Anne." Luke smiled. "I'm having doubts about going to college because I love my girlfriend too much, what can I say?"

"I love you, Luke, and if you want this then you shouldn't let me keep you from leaving. I'll still be here, I'll always be here." I assured him.

"Promise?" Luke asked, holding up his hand. He stuck out his pinky finger and raised his eyebrows at me, waiting for me to do the same.

"What are we, in the first grade?" I laughed, holding out my pinky for Luke to take.

"Promise me you'll always love me, no matter where I go." Luke said, ignoring my comment.

"I promise." I nodded. Luke and I linked pinkies, creating the unbreakable bond that was so popular when we were both children.

"Wow, we should work on your math homework. You're going to fail geometry again." Luke said, sitting up.

An hour and half of a worksheet later I was getting bored and tired of my homework. We were on spring break now, and I had a whole week to do my homework but Luke thought it would be better for us to get it done right away. I always forgot that he was originally my tutor in the first place, not my boyfriend.

"Luke, please. Can we take a break or something?" I begged, throwing my hands up in the air.

"Don't you think it'll feel good when you get all of your homework done right away?" Luke asked. "Then you won't have to worry about it for the rest of the week!"

"You sound like a teacher, I don't like that." I pouted.

"Okay, here's the deal. If I win this, you have to finish your homework. And if you win I'll do it for you." Luke laughed, but I had no idea what he was talking about.

"Win what?" I asked. Before I could get an answer from Luke, he wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me down, rolling us off of the mattress. He landed on the floor on top of me, quickly kissing me on the lips before flipping us over.

"You're supposed to pin me on the ground and keep me there for, like, 5 seconds!" Luke laughed.

"Oh, so we're in the WWE now? And I thought it was only 3 seconds? Do they even have rules about how long is has to be? I thought you just went for as long as you could?" I groaned, flipping some hair off of my face. I sat up on top of Luke, still not very clear with what we were doing.

"It doesn't matter, let's make it 20." Luke smirked. He grabbed onto my wrists and tried to flip us over but I kept my legs around his waist so he wasn't able to get on top of me.

"I think I like staring contests better." I laughed. This whole little wrestling match wasn't really working out, since I could tell neither one of us wanted to really hurt each other.

"I'm so tired of those." Luke said, licking his lips. He gave one last attempt to get on top of me, but I still wasn't letting go.

"So if I win this, you'll do my homework for me?" I asked. I put my hands on Luke's chest again and pushed him until his back was on the floor and I was sitting on him again.

"You only have half of a worksheet left." Luke shrugged.

"Then that's not fair! There should be something else too!" I complained. I'm sure this wasn't how Luke pictured this happening, he probably didn't think that there would be this much bickering.

"Okay, fine, if you win we can make out or something. It doesn't matter because I'm going to win anyway." Luke chuckled. He was using his tongue to play around with his lip ring, which he knew I liked.

"You're going to ask if we can make out even if I don't win." I sighed, still not seeing the point of this other than the fact that Luke probably just wanted me on top of him. We could have just played rock, paper, scissors to decided if we were going to finish the homework or not.

Luke put his hands on my hips again and slammed me against the floor, this time moving quick enough so he was straddling me before I could try and move. He pinched my sides, causing me to yelp, he knew I was ticklish there. By now I was laughing too hard to even try to move, and we both knew that Luke was going to win this little fight. He shifted so he had both hands on the ground, holding himself up above me.

I put my hands on Luke's shoulders and pulled him closer to me, forgetting about our little game for a moment. Luke lowered himself onto me and connected our lips, him obviously not caring about what we were doing either. I ran my tongue over Luke's piercing, causing a small moan to escape his lips.

"I think you won." I whispered, knowing that Luke had gotten me to stay on the ground for well over 20 seconds now.

"But you always win, Stel." Luke laughed, his lips still moving against mine.
